Event: Birthday Dinner

Players: 54yr old mom (birthday girl)
34 yr old daughter (me, planner deluxe!)
37 yr old son-in-law (loved dearly!)
74 yr old grandma (easy going!!)

Dinner after Fantasmic....8:30 sound good?

Take the boat from MGM...sound good?
Shula's or Yachtsman? Have been to Yachtsman...good enough...but is Shula's better or more special for event?

Also-if Shula's "wins" what should we wear?

I've tried both. I preferred the Yachtsman.

I think the quality of food at Shulas is better, but I didn't like the atmosphere. I don't like ala carte places (Shula's is).
It was too dark for me. The waiters were a pain IMO. Call me a hick I guess, but I do not want to be interrrupted 10 times during a meal and asked if I need anything or be asked if everything is OK.

The prices at Shula's were quite a bit higher than the Yachtsman if I remember right.

Either one will be fine. It comes down to what kind of dining experience you prefer.

Shula's is more of a steakhouse atmosphere, and the steaks are really good. It's dark and intimate.

I liked Yachtsman but it has much less atmosphere. It seemed to me to be like a typical hotel restaurant.

Shula's is pricier, but hey, it's a special occasion!

Thanks, ArcticWildMan!

I appreciate all the feedback I can get. I'm tempted to stick with Yachtsman because I've been there and enjoyed it but my husband would really like to try Shula's and I figured on a special occasion it might be a nice option.

This will sound frivilous, but I wonder if Shula's would/will acknowledge my mom's birthday as I believe Yachtsman would?

Goofy I know, but it's the little things that make such a big difference!

I have a PS for yachtsman for my after wedding dinner for 9 people, 1st dining reservation center messed up (it's a good thing I called) and made it for 2 people,so they fixed it for 9 people at 530pm, my question is they tell me if I get there 20 min early that'll be the only way to accomadate us, is that true or will we be okay...HELP!

Shula's is by far a superior steakhouse. The beef is the best I have ever had. Our last couple of meal at YSH were mediocre. The portions at Shula's border on huge and it is pricey but imho well worth it.

Shula's could "Disney-Up" their service a bit and they are expensive. But the steaks are larger and better than Yachtsman's. .a lot like what you'd see at Morton's.
You can always call Shula's about the birthday thing. They are also reachable "on line" on the WDW Dolphin web-site.

In most cases, the seating staff will not prep a table for a large party until they arrive. With transportation delays, and parties that just do not show-up, it's a better practice. But, 20 minutes is extreme, especially since it does not open until 5:30. 20 minutes would be more appropriate for something like am 8pm PS when the resturant is full already.
Anyway, the most important thing is that ALL members of the party arrive, sending one "scout" ahead to check-in does not insure a complete party.
I would suggest that your party arrives no later than 5:20, checks in and maybe head over to The Crews Cup Lounge while waiting. Somebody is usually at the podium around 5pm getting everything ready for the night. Once you check-in, they will instruct the bussers to prepare the table.
At 5:30, your party will be seated.
Question. Did you order a cake? If so, call the podium ahead of time, or stop by the day before and confirm that the resturant is aware of the cake order. Sometimes everybody knows about the cake, except the resturant!

Enjoy your special night and remember to give us your review once your back.

Mike

Thankx crazy hakim
the manager return my phone call and said he would take care of us himself, and ensured that we would have 1 table for our party.
;)

We did both 2 weeks ago. I would never go back to YSH! IMO, for a steakhouse, they were below average. 2 nights later we went to Shula's and loved it. We loved it so much, we went back the next night.

Shula's may cost a little more, but their meat were so much better.

Dress Code: Casual. I wore a golf(collared) shirt and shorts both nights.

If you have been to Morton's of Chicago in your travels, then you will have an idea what SHula's is like. Dress code in Orlando is casual, golf shirt and shorts is fine. I wouldn 't go to a place like that in a tank top and shorts all sweaty from the theme parks, that's for sure.
