I kinda wish the DVC studios had these

I don't think they ever will due to the fire hazard at a family resort. Imagine having a night or early morning fire drill with little ones. It's a nice idea, but I think it would cause more problems.

What makes it a worse hazard from stoves in the villas?

Not necessarily fire hazard but, I think a hand could inadvertently be placed on that hot surface more readily than on a stove which children are taught to avoid.

The size of the counter vs the size of a stove and countertop. I would love anything that would improve the DVC, but I can just see more problems. And the idea of a burned hand as was mentioned is true too. Also, it would be too close to the sink too.

I would love a burner or two, not everything can be microwaved.

As far as safety, in some resorts with bigger villas, the stove is in the main walkway. The thought of cooking with kids running around concerns me.

Well they could go with this then, more obvious hazard, doesn't stay hot :D:

Re fire safety during cooking. I've stayed at a rebuilt apart-hotel in London that that had been extensively gutted due to a fire caused by cooking. Clearly the historic situation was a concern to the owners when it was been rebuilt, the extractor unit above the hob had some automated fire extinguisher incorporated.

I'd like that, particularly for heating the tea kettle. Or they could just provide an electric kettle. Coffee makers just don't heat the water enough for a good cup of tea.

I wonder if that is a conventional electric cook top or one of those new fancy induction cook tops?

I think the conventional electric cook tops take a while heat up (compared to gas) and then take a while to cool down. That would be a concern--especially if there isn't a lot of counter space--folks inadvertantly putting "stuff" on the hot cook top surface (or as bobbiwoz pointed out-a hand).

I've only seen the induction cook tops demonstrated (at Disney World--cooking demos :) ), so I don't have any first have knowledge of using them, but they seemed to be really fast. I would think they would be a lot safer than an open flame. I don't "think" the induction cook top stays hot like the conventional electric cook top does.

But, even with the induction cook top-- there is always the problem of burning something in a pan that cause smoke in the room and the fire alarm to go off... (But, as stargazer65 pointed out--the same could happen in a full kitchen). Maybe with a good stove hood fan/ventilation?

These wishes are essentially about wanting more amenities in the studios. IOW, we would like 1 bedroom amenities for the price of a studio. Nothing wrong with that, but it's unlikely to ever happen, IMO.

These cooktops in the studio would scare me from a safety standpoint. As pointed out above, the electric version would be a burn hazard, especially for kids but only them due to the close quarters. And the gas version—yikes. Again, close quarters with lots of combustibles nearby. I doubt they would be lawful in the studios due to rules about distance from flame to combustible materials. I don’t know if the electric version presents a general fire hazard as well but it’s certainly a concern to me.

All of that said, the DVC buildings are probably not nearly the risk for widespread fire as an older building in London. From what I can tell, the Disney hotels are all steel framed and certainly have fire sprinkler systems so I would think a major fire spreading is unlikely. At least that’s what the management of the 80s skyscraper I work in (or once worked in) tell us.

Also, induction is expensive and only works for special pans so would not seem suitable for a mass product like DVC.

On top of all of this, I would think including these cooktops would add wear and tear, smells in the fabrics, etc.

Now, a washer dryer in the new VGF studios would be a game changer for sure and not present all of these issues, other than cost of course.
