I killed a squirrel and I feel really bad...

Yesterday, I accidentally hit a squirrel with my DDs car...it was awful. I know it was unavoidable, but I feel really bad. This was my second animal killing...years ago, I hit a raccoon. That was tough too.

Have you ever hit an animal with your car? Did you just shrug it off as an unavoidable occurance, or did you feel awful about it?

I ran over a stray cat that I did not realize was sleeping on my tire once. I felt absolutely horrible. It was a cat that I had been feeding, so that made me feel even worse because I felt like it was my fault it was hanging out there in the first place.

For some reason birds keep flying into my windshield. It's really freaky.

This time of year seems to be especially bad for squirrels and other critters collecting their nuts for winter. It's hard to avoid them so try not to feel too bad, as hard as that is.

Awww, sorry you're feeling badly, PAW. I'd feel the same way.

When I was several months pregnant, I actually ran over a snake. I thought it was just a piece of tire rubber in the road, but at the last minute it moved (but not fast enough). Between the pregnancy hormomes and my love for animals, I swear I cried for hours over this snake.

When I was in college, I was a passenger in a Corvette, when we hit a deer (upstate NY--deer country). It was even more awful because 'vettes are so low to the ground--we just drug parts of the poor thing. We all felt really badly about that, but it was unavoidable. On the other hand, I had no idea a deer could do so much damage to a car--she had several thousand dollars worth of repairs.

I'm sorry about the squirrel.

Just yesterday I hit a bird, and I couldn't believe what a big thump it made. All I could see in my rearview mirror was feathers flying. It was really strange because normally birds get out of your way.

Years ago I ran over a very large turtle. The shell was probably 14 inches in diameter. It was in the middle of the road and I didn't see it until too late. I have no idea why a turtle like that was in the middle of the road, but I felt really bad about running it over.

I've ran over a few squirrels in my time. I don't like to, and I do try to avoid them, but when they do that dance in the middle of the road where they run out, stop, turn back, turn back again, run, turn back, run, turn again, ad infinitum and you don't know which way they're going sometimes it's hard to.

Heck, I hit one while bicycle riding one time. Little critter took a tumble in the spokes of my tire, got up, and ran back to the same side of the road he came from. Gave a buddy of mine a great laugh, though.

I have hit a bird and a squirrel. ALWAYS when I have a kid in the car. OMG! I feel horrible! Those squirrels, though, DO like to mess with your head. DS16 and I have a running joke about the squirrels that dart out and then back and then half way out and then back, etc. We call them suicide squirrels. (haven't hit one of those, though) Makes us laugh. We're weird I guess!

I ran over a squirrel that waited until the light turned green to run out in front of us. I was watching him on the side of the road during the red light. This was over at WDW. So not only did I take a squirrel's life, it was a Disney squirrel!

I'm still in denial over this.....

Unfortunatly since I spend a lot of time hunting and fishing I tend to hit things every so often because it's usually dark and I am out in areas that have a lot of critters running around. It usually gets to me. I know that sounds pretty wierd that I would get upset hitting something on my way to intentionall try to shoot an animal but it does. My Father and Grandfather always taught me to only take game I would eat so the usless killing on any animal gets to me. Anyway a funny story about running over animals, my Aunt and cousin lived out in the country on a red dirt road in East Texas. One day as they were coming back home from town they turned off the main road and hit a buck (male deer) they stopped to see if it was dead and being the good rednecks that they are could not bring themselves to leave it there. So they gathered him up and put him in the trunk of the car. When they got home they called my other cousin out to see what they had. My aunt opened the trunk and thats when they found out they had not killed the deer but just stunned him. He woke up and was preety scared/ pissed off about being in the trunk. He came out with his antlers flying as the three of them ran into the house. They thought twice about picking up road kill after that.

Hitting an animal is an awful feeling.

A few months ago I hit a rabbit and was so sick over it. That was the worst feeling ever and I could not shake it. My sister has a rabbit so I kept thinking it could have been Juliet.....stupid I know but I was so sad.

After Bambi ran into my Envoy and did $3,000 worth of damage, to say the least, I was not happy..............

I was taught in drivers ed to NOT swerve to avoid ANY animal......the results could be a lot worse than a dead chipmunk

About 15 years ago, I hit a rabbit on my way to work. I still haven't forgotten about it.

I have hit a couple of squirrels and felt terrible. I've had a bird or two fly into us and also feel bad. Have almost hit deer before--that is scary! Around here there are lots of wild animals so close calls are not uncommon.

One time in high school my boyfriend hit and killed a dog. I was so very upset over that one for a long time. Hitting a wild animal is bad enough, but an animal that was probably someone's pet was horrible.

I've never hit a critter, but I saw one hit once. A flock of geese were flying over a road, and one snags his foot on a power line, he had to crash land in the road, right in front of a car that had NO time to swerve, she hit the poor goose (the tire ran over it). I hope it died on the spot....we were driving along too so I couldn't tell.
