The third Game of Thrones book.

One and two were ok.

Three was pure torture.

Four was written by a different person, I swear. The whole tone of the writing changed.

Haven't read Five yet. Waiting for it come out in paperback (October)

My friend lent me the first 2 books in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series. I hated those books. It's probably the fastest I ever read a book just to get it over with as quickly as possible. Kind of like ripping a band-aid off.

The 6th book of Harry Potter was pretty bad too, and I agree with others on the 3rd Hunger Games. The Twilight series sucked too. I was ok with the 1st, thought the second sucked, but hoped it was a sophomore curse... it wasn't.

I've tried to read the 2nd book in the Eragon series twice now, but never make it through.

Fifty Shades and Gone Girl.

I felt the same way about Gone Girl- actually kind of wished she had been killed because she was so unlikeable.
The past few books that I've finished have been out of a sense of obligation:

Finished Nijinsky a few weeks ago-YAWN. How can one of the most interesting and dancers of all time be made boring? The author managed though.

I read an enjoyable book and then read a part of one of the books above. Reading is my passion and I read at least 1 and sometimes 3/night. It's hard to find books that appeal. I'll get on a biography or history kick, then it's murder/thrillers, followed by hidden history, filled with a little of everything else.

OP - Did your book include a party with a large cake near the end? If so, I read the same book.

I keep wanting to discuss this plot telling device (sike! It was all a lie!) with someone, but certainly didn't like the book enough to recommend it to my friends.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy. Took me an entire school year to read all 3 books. I was determined to read them all, but UGH....I struggled!

I think it is interesting how varied tastes can be in books. I took a LONG time with the third book in this series, but mostly because I was sad that there were ONLY three, and I didn't want the joy of reading them to come to an end.

I know. I love to see what other people are reading and I'll try to read anything . I think it took me 4 or 5 months to get through book 1, then I flew through book 2 and struggled with book 3 again. Granted, I was only ready for about 2 to 3 hours/week while DD was at dance class, but I didn't have that urge TO read these any other time. I was h*ll bent on finishing them though. Now I need to make time to sit down and watch the movie

I hated that book. I'm not a fan of wizard of oz but thought I'd give it a shot.

This was the one that immediately came to mind for me too. I love the play and like the movie, but the book ...UGH...I just slogged through it. Even after I finished, I felt like there was a whole subtext that I wasn't smart enough to understand.

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris. The fourth (and last) of the Hannibal Lecter series.

It was unreadable. I gave up after about 50 pages.
(Of course, it didn't help that I didn't read the first 3 of the series - I got the book as a gift . . . )

I belong to a book club with "loose" rules.

If we are in the middle of a book we personally do not like - you can throw in the towel, which I did for The Sweet By and By. I tried and tried with this book - even read some of the book-club discussion lists, to no avail. Even the questions seemed stupid to me.

I've had other books that I've not cared for - but even those I can usually make my way through them.

Eat Pray Love comes to mind. Such a BORING read. I still don't know how I got through it.

I bail if it doesn't hold my interest.
