Just got back from the movie Holes and here are some thoughts about the movie. My Dh liked it but said the ending was too sappy. My dd(age 11) loved it!!!!!!!!! My ds (age8) liked it but was not too impressed. I liked it but wished a few things could have been left out of the movie. First of all the reason why the movie was rated PG was for the following reasons: cuss words such as d***, H*** and Jack A**. One seen did show the teenage star of the movie stripped down to his underwear which made my dd and I feel uncomfortable. Also there were minor fights between the kids and guns were used to shoot at lizards and at people. The story was a good one overall. It was a story where the past meets the future and does a good job teaching the importance of friendship, not giving up and character building. John Voight did a good job with his character. It was fun to see Eartha Kitt in the movie. I would recommend this movie be seen for children 8/9 or older. There were alot of very young children (under 8) who looked bored. Overall I think it was a good movie.

They showed previews to the Pirates of the Carribean. The movie looks VERY dark. The kids were not impressed. It looks like a swashbuckling very dark Pirate movie. I was hoping for a lighter Pirates of the Carribean movie in cartoon form. I will have to wait to decide to whether we will go see it.

Thanks for the review!!!!

We also have an 11 year old DD. She read the book earlier this year, and really liked it (well, at least she liked it enough to give her mom a page-by-page recap that took, oh, about 20 minutes  )

I appreciate the warning about the language, too. We do not condone those words in our house, but I think they were used in the book as well, and the movie was trying to be as accurate as possible. I don't think it will stop us from going to the see it! (You can hear much, much worse language in the shopping malls these days :( :( :( )

I can't wait to see it! I had hoped to take DD today, but it doesn't look possible. Perhaps tomorrow. Holes is an excellent read for young and old alike. :)

DS started the book yesterday. (Good things happen when the tv priviledges are taken away). Told DS that once he finishes the book we can go to the movie.

My 9 year old DS was very much looking forward to seeing this film – he is a huge fan of the book. Having had me read it to him, at DD’s recommendation, and then read it a few times himself.

I was pleased to see it was fairly faithful to the book with a few significant changes to transition to the big screen. The story line start to end is very close to the book and if you thought one was corny you would think the other is too. I very much enjoyed the book and the movie. My boys loved both.

Our 12 old dd (a counting the days to the next book Harry Potter fan) said it was better then the Harry Potter movies, high praise, because the kid actors were better. They were, much better. The adults were very good too.

Holes is a story of finding redemption through friendship set in a rough and tumble world of a reform camp for juvenile delinquents. I thought the language and level of violence were appropriately tamed down from what they would be in reality to tell a nice story to (in both the movie and the book.) I didn’t find either to be an issue - i didn't notice it as a problem. In fact my DD and I were talking that in the real would such a place would be extremely violent and the language would be too.

The movie depends on the development of the story not on sitcom one liners and physical gags to hold the audience. We took our almost 6 year old and she was a little scared at times (not as much as with HP2 and the spiders) but none the worse for the ware. She didn’t enjoy it as much as the other three kids, mostly I thing due to the lack of simple gags and jokes.

My measure for how good a movie is is if the kids want to get the video and how soon they start talking about getting it. In this case DS was talking about getting the video before we were to the trash cans in the back of the theater – possibly a new record.

Holes get thumbs up from the Zurgs.
