Hi Disneygirl33,
WELCOME TO THE DIS BOARDS!!!!!!
I was at Disney in February 2004 and at that time the Pal Mickey was US$60.00 but what they do is charge you in full for the Pal Mickey and then if you decide to keep it for rental only during your visit, they credit back the rest of the $. It cost me under $10 for rental. I guess they do it this way so that if people take them home, they are already paid for. Personally, If I was going to buy one, I would return the rental and ask them to give me a brand new "Pal" to take home.
I liked it for the day, but in the end I couldn't justify paying that amount for something that would only be used when in Disney. I know it has games, etc that you can use outside of Disney, but I think that that option would soon become boring.
Having said all that, If I had extra $'s and wanted a really different Disney Keepsake, I would probably buy it as a souvenir. They say that as things change around the parks, the Pal Mickey is automatically receptive to the new info for future trips.
I found at times that I couldn't hear Mickey due to noise levels in certain places. He does "giggle" (vibrate) when he is starting to say something.
Another thing I found out when renting Pal Mickey is that it takes time to go through the paperwork before you get him. My family were happy to browse in the store while I was getting it set up, but at the time because it was still fairly new, the people in the store didn't seem to be on top of a quick efficient way to do it. They kept asking other cast members if what they were doing was correct. It took about 10minutes before they had it all sorted out. By this time, my family was getting fidgety as they were anxious to get going.
Hope this helps,
Carol
