I just learned today...

I’mm 66 & have never needed a passport. I’ve had a real ID since they were first out, have renewed my license with it twice already. And we fly in the US on vacation 3-4 times a year with no issues. Not everyone needs a passport.
for you, it would be nice to have so long as the expirations line up....

This. I was saying that there may be a law in the future that does require one depending on how the world goes in the next couple years for security reasons but I was trying to say that it could possibly be covered by the government if it ever became a requirement.

I seriously hope not. Or so much for one of the first things I learned in school….. the US doesn’t require its citizens to carry “papers” with them at all times.

I wonder if a contributor to the increase is due to passport requirements to travel to Canada and Mexico where previously US citizens didn’t need one.

Please don't give out inaccurate information.

The passport card is for those who travel between the US and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean by land or sea. It cannot be used for travel by air or to any other country. For that, a passport book is required.
Please don’t give out inaccurate information.

US citizens don’t need a passport card or book to cross into Canada by land or sea. Our enhanced drivers license that includes Real ID works just fine for that.

Isn't Real ID only required for flying (in regards to travel)? You can drive, walk, bike, take a train, bus, taxi, and all the other ways to travel domestically without a Real ID.
What process was "leaky"?
The Real ID act was signed in 2005 with an original "go live" date in 2008. The deadline is now May 2025... still over a year and a half away.
Ok, so you tell me why non real ID areto be rejected to board airplanes? I would enjoy to hear your well thought out explanation attached to sources, thanks in advance for mansplaining to me, I look forward to the learnin' since these big thoughts are too much for lil' ol me. Links would be very helpful, much obliged kindly sir.

To travel between the US and Canada you need:
A passport or passport card (not flying),
a nexus card,
Enhanced driver's license issued by Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington.

Was your ID expired?

Real ID is currently NOT required to board a domestic flight until May 7th 2025
https://www.dhs.gov/real-id

As to why you were denied entry into the sterile area with a standard ID, impossible to answer without all the facts.
When were you denied entry into a sterile area,
Did the TSA agent give you are reason?

The fact it was extended does not change the why, but by all means do please explain the why, I would love to better myself in this very meaningful way. People like me can't go around all not knowing things when so many people know all things and better, please share.

My information was completely accurate. If you don't believe me look it up yourself. I never mentioned the RealID. I wasn't talking about the RealID. If you'd read it, I was responding to another poster that said you couldn't use a passport card to go international which was not correct. Please read the entire post before calling someone out incorrectly.

Again, without knowing all the facts relevant to the matter I could make a wild-*** guess and say the TSA agent thought you were a danger to yourself and others..... This might be completely off base.... just the first thing that comes to mind with no information provided

Again I ask,
What did the agent tell you,
When and where did this happen,
Was your standard ID expired,
Did the name on the ID agree with the name on the ticket,
I would be happy to explain what happened to you, but you are not giving me all the information.

What I can tell you is you were NOT denied entry in to the sterile area because you did no have a Real ID, unless you own doc Brown's Time Machine and you were trying to travel at some point after May 7th 2025...

I said passports are an option. Not the only option.

I'm sorry, I really don't understand what you're trying to say. Earlier you said...
the US just revamped to Real ID licenses for domestic travel because the entire process was so leaky it was useless.
BUT, Real ID isn't scheduled to go into effect until May 2025. That's over 18 months away. So no, the US has NOT "just revamped to Real ID licenses". AND, the ONLY domestic travel Real ID will affect (in May 2025 if it doesn't get extended) is commercial air travel.

And, I'm wondering what "entire process" was "so leaky".

I'm trying to get clarification of what you were trying to say.

Enhanced driver's licenses are not available in every state. I know they are valid for air travel domestically. I didn't say they weren't. And I didn't say that someone should always carry them. I said passports may become more important with further uses in the future.

Actually, you are stating inaccurate information. What you posted talks about what you need to cross into the US from Canada which is not the same as your statement that real ID is enough to ENTER CANADA FROM THE US. It is not.

Entry into Canada: Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

Why would it be nice for me to have a passport? I just said I don’t need one, I’ve had an enhanced driver’s license with Real ID for years & travel in the US with no issues. Why do you assume I need a passport? And what expirations?

You said everyone should be REQUIRED to have a passport...

The vast majority of people in the US do not NEED a passport.
Okay, I will clarify. I think if you are born a US citizen, after your birth certificate is filled out, the government should give you a child's version passport via mail and bill themselves for it. That's my honest opinion.

Ever lose your license just before a trip?
Or have your wallet stolen on a trip?

It is an alternate form of Identification....

I have used my passport/passport card to get on a plane more than a few times.... Just because my wallet fell into my bag and I didn't feel like looking for it......

In my world redundancy is very nice to have.....

Exactly. Enhanced drivers license included real ID. So you don’t need a passport.
