You can get an expedited passport in less than 48 hours, why not get a real passport?
I received a passport in less than 24, and the US passport office will print it while you wait for a same-day flight.

Also, your airline should have known better, they are responsible for transporting you back to the US if you are denied entry.

That was what I was wondering...not sure why she didn't have a regular book. But I believe that Air France (her carrier) will be receiving a fine for this incident.

Interesting It was Air France and she was going to France???
But yes, You have to have a passport photo like 15 bucks at Staples, and then the passport, passport card, expedited service, and Fedex fees are 230 bucks.....

The only draw back is you need to go to a passport office, and those are usually in big cities, and well .....

It was and is a feel-good measure that really nobody wants to see get instituted.

I doubt it. Most countries are following suit with similar laws I believe.

Not because of Covid-19, that was instituted shortly after 9/11.

Actually, she was going to Italy and passing through France. What's ironic though is that her original itinerary took her through Amsterdam but, and get this, Air France themselves told her she couldn't enter the Netherlands with that emergency passport but she'd be fine at CDG in Paris. Umm, what?

Yes, she should've done her due diligence and verified that she could enter France on that passport, but really shame on Air France for giving her widely inaccurate information that was very costly. The cherry on the proverbial parfait for her was that when she asked the Air France agent if they were sure she could pass through, he got all huffy and laughed saying that he knows his own country's laws. I guess not. And since the policy is very clearly stated online, she likely has little recourse to get her money back unless she raises a huge stink with Air France.

I don't mean just for going abroad. I meant as an alternative ID to fly domestically.

I’mm 66 & have never needed a passport. I’ve had a real ID since they were first out, have renewed my license with at least it twice already. And we fly in the US on vacation 3-4 times a year with no issues. Not everyone needs a passport.
