Is this true?? WOW! We live in a very small town, and AMES is our only "real" store for spur of the moment, convenient shopping!! This will devastate our area. The people here don't and won't travel to shop at all. They're going to be lost. I don't have a problem going elsewhere, but I am the minority about that. :( This is really awful news for the area. :(

I heard that too, Barb, a while ago.

There's an Ames near you? Aren't you fairly close to that big Walmart?

Some of my family members love Ames, but there is not one near me. Ames reminds me of Jamesway, if you can remember that store.

I'm excited another Target is opening on 422.

We had an Ames right around the corner from us that closed down about 2 years ago. The only other one around here is like 20 minutes away.

Cindy, the AMES store is in Boyertown and was very convenient. I'm just 15 minutes from Walmart, which is no problem for me. I'll drive anywhere to shop. ;) :D Their are a lot of people in Boyertown that wouldn't think of driving to Pottstown to shop. Heck, they won't even go to Gilbertsville to shop. :( They just don't travel. :( I guess they're going to have to now.
I remember Jamesway. Used to shop at that store, too. :(
Are you talking about the new Target near the Regal show? It looks like Lowe's is going in there, too! That's quite a complex!! Should be great!

I used to work at a Jamesway, years ago, when I was in college....

Boyertown, really... I'm not that familiar, but a few people I work with live out there.

Lucky you you are so close to a Walmart, nothing like that would ever happen in our town.. (but they have multiple Chinese food stores/pizza/boutiques! )

yes, I am talking about the one at the Oaks exit. A Lowes, Target, Movies, that will be NICE! I went to the movies yesterday, and I was pleasently suprised to see all that construction.

We have two Ames within 20 minutes of us. I hope they don't close, I am still missing Bradlees... :(

they are restocking by the looks of it...every day.......keeping my fingers crossed that they stay.....

I knew this was going to happen sooner or later, we have everything in town, from Walmart supercenter, to K-mart to Ames, all kinds of fast food restaurants , all except for a dunkin donuts!!I hate to say this but I did not like Ames , I found it pricey and I did not like the quality of their clothes.
I do feel sorry though because a lot of jobs will be lost but hopefully something else will re-open and be succesful.

What a shame...I wonder what my in-laws are going to do, as they live in Northern Vermont, and the ames is the only major store around, and it's a 30 min. drive for them at that! The nearest wal-mart is just over an hour away, and I sure don't see many of the locals making that treck, including my in-laws.

Yes, they announced this week that they will close all the stores. They have been in bankruptcy and just couldn't turn it around. They will be liquidating over the next few months.

Just a warning when they do start these sales. When the Caldor chain closed, it wasn't just the merchandise from the stores that was for sale. They had a liquidation company come in and run the sale. They brought all kinds of stuff from other sources. I didn't think the prices ever went particularly low and you had to be careful about what you were buying.

I just read in the paper yesterday that Ames was closing. Then I saw a friend last night and she said that yesterday was the last day they were taking any returns also.

I'm not surprised it's closing. We had a super Wal-Mart open up a couple of years ago a few miles away and I'd much rather drive the extra distance and go there. But I feel bad for the older people in our community who don't want to travel.

Just read it in the paper today. I hope those folks will be able to get other jobs soon. But with the glut of stores in this area I'm sure they will. I love Wal-Mart but still miss Caldor's for those of you in the Northeast:D

Krisu, I loved Caldors! I miss that store still. Ames I've never cared for, but I do feel bad for all the people that are going to be out of work.

I still miss Caldor's and Bradlee's, too. :(

Hopefully for many of you, your Ames stores will re-open as something better.

Our local Bradlee's is in the process of becoming a Home Depot. Not that I'm crazy about Home Depot, but it will be convenient to have one nearby.

I felt the same way about Home Depot til one came to our town.....love it!:D

Wow- I thought they had all closed already. Weren't they the parent company to Zayre? Those all closed down here about 10-11 years ago.
