My DH's 40th birthday is coming up. He has always wanted to learn to fly and is fascinated with airplanes. Our local small airport has Discovery Flights for a very reasonable price. He will get to fly (with a pilot) for 30-40 minutes and see what's it's like to be in control. I think he is going to love it! His birthday isn't until April and I want to surprise him. I don't want to tell anyone I know about this surprise because I don't want it to get back to him. I'm just so excited about it that I had to tell someone! Thanks for listening.

:thumbsup2 Sounds AWESOME! I have always wanted to take a flying lesson. I am sure your DH will LOVE it!

What a cool gift! My husband would love to do something like that! I've got check into something like that around here...

Your DH will LOVE it! My DH works for our regional airport. He has always loved being around planes and was taking lessons for awhile...wants to start again. He loves being out there with all the pilots and all the different planes. He's already planning on our DS's first Discovery Flight...our second date was a flight and it was truly memorable.

What a wonderful gift!! I'm sure your DH will love it.

He will love it!

I did the same thing for my DH, for his 30th birthday. They let me ride along in the back seat too, which was awesome to be able to see the 'kid-in-a-candy-store' look on his face as it was happening :)

The instructor did the takeoff and landing, but gave him the controls for pretty much the rest of the time. She even was teaching him some tricks :scared1: She put a pen on the dashboard and was doing a quick descent/dive to make it float.

If things haven't changed, they will then sign off for you to log the discovery flight as official flight time if you DH goes on to continue lessons to learn how to fly.

Great gift! DH still talks about it. Our only regret- we forgot the camera :headache:

And the age is not a problem. I was 38 when I got my pilot's license.

My most memorable flight is when I flew a light single into O'Hare International Airport on a Friday afternoon. I was going with a couple of friends to a convention being held at a hotel very close to the airport, and it cost a lot less than going commercially.

I got that for DS#2 when he was 16. He absolutely loved it. I video taped it as well. They did a full preflight inspection; everything that a private pilot must do before he takes off. It was a wonderful learning experience. Once aloft, he took the stick.

I did this for my husband on his birthday one year and he loved it!
I was so excited I could barely wait until his birthday to tell him!
Great gift!:thumbsup2

My father got his pilot's license at 36. My brother and I grew up flying around in a four seat Cessna. My brother got his license as a teenager and as an adult is a commercial pilot and CFI. My son loves anything and everything related to planes, but I honestly hope he doesn't follow in his uncle's and grandfather's footsteps.

That was a cool gift. I hope he had a nice birthday.
