I am from Mars, and my mother is from Venus. :confused3

Firstly, I am not the easiest person to shop for. If I want something, I buy it. There is nothing I *need*.

Secondly, my mother and I have the exact same conversation every. single. year.

Mother- What do you want for Christmas?
Me- Really, there's nothing much I need...
Mother - But there has to be something...
Me- Just make a donation to the animal shelter in my name.
Mother...( dead silence ) then...Well, you need to be able to open something.
Me - Ok, how about a Barnes and Noble gift card. I read all the time and can always use them.

Then- Christmas comes around. I get an Olive Garden ( gak !! ) gift card and a pot holder...

Really?? Then she gets annoyed with me because I don't sound *excited* enough about my gifts.

So, now I'm looking at either trading or selling the gift card. Then I'll probably take the proceeds and donate them to the Animal Shelter. Seems like we could have saved a step...

Really, you have a mother that wanted to give you a nice Christmas present and you sneer at it? Nice. I wish I had a mother to give me a present, I would treasure it.

Wow! Super serious much? I'm sorry you don't have a mother to give you an Olive Garden gift card. If I wasn't selling it I'd mail you mine.

me, too. :sad1:

Perhaps in the future you could come up with a little something for your mother to buy you. That way you both win.

Be thankful you have a mom.
BTW, we bought a puppy from a pet store and he was wonderful. We also bought a puppy from a breeder- turned out the breeder ran a puppy mill.

She did give a suggestion (Barnes & Noble gift card) and her mother got her something else anyway.

OP, my mother does the same thing to me. She asks me what I want and then doesn't want to get me what I ask for. I am genuinely happy with any gift but I don't understand the point of asking.

:confused3 But she did. She asked for a gift card to a book store.

I get you tammy. You love your Mom, you just wish she would listen to you.

Glad you're proud to have bought a puppy at a pet store. Keep it up and keep puppy mills running forever.

Exactly. If you're going to buy what *you* want, instead of what *I* ask for, why even ask?:confused3

I could give you the Lucy $0.02 psycho babble, but really, I have no idea.

Well, you could try NOT buying something you want (next year) and ask you mother for that. :upsidedow

Since you want to help the animal shelter, you could ask for things they need, such as towels, pet food, blankets, etc. Maybe your mom wouldn't be excited to buy a big bag of dog food or kitty litter, but I'll bet a shelter would be happy to get it.

You could also ask for a specific book, or just tell her to pick out a book she thinks you'll like and then you can easily exchange it if it's one you've already read or don't want to read. Or maybe give her the names of a few restaurants where you like to eat. Then she can get you gift cards to those.

IMHO, Christmas presents are for things you want, not things you need unless the recipient has things they actually NEED. It sounds like you don't. I'm not slamming you, I am not in need of anything either. But it's fun to open something you wouldn't normally buy for yourself. Maybe you could think of something you consider an extravagance, such as a mani/pedi, that she could give you.

I know you are upset, but you are personally attacking other disers...that isn't cool. There are much more important things to be upset about.

I say enjoy the gift. I am sure your mother didn't want to give to the animals...she wanted to give to you...the gift card you asked for ...sounds like it would have not been as special because you buy books anyways.

go out and enjoy a dinner at Olive Garden..If you have no one to take..take her with you.

I am? She's the one who posted.." BTW, I bought a puppy in a pet store..." Unless you live under a rock, you know where those puppies come from. It's not my fault if you don't care, but I'll be happy to remind you.
