I just don't get it...

I say enjoy the gift. I am sure your mother didn't want to give to the animals...she wanted to give to you...the gift card you asked for ...sounds like it would have not been as special because you buy books anyways.

go out and enjoy a dinner at Olive Garden..If you have no one to take..take her with you.

Now it's going to sound like I'm being petty. I swear, I'm not, it's almost funny. I find Olive Garden to be the most disgusting restaurant on the planet. I ate at one once. About 15 years ago...and have told everyone ever since how much I disliked it...

I even google'd their gift cards today to see if I could use it at another restaurant I like better. I don't like a single restaurant in the chain.

I need to check out that plastic jungle or whatever it's called..

I am from Mars, and my mother is from Venus. :confused3

Firstly, I am not the easiest person to shop for. If I want something, I buy it. There is nothing I *need*.

Secondly, my mother and I have the exact same conversation every. single. year.

Mother- What do you want for Christmas?
Me- Really, there's nothing much I need...
Mother - But there has to be something...
Me- Just make a donation to the animal shelter in my name.
Mother...( dead silence ) then...Well, you need to be able to open something.
Me - Ok, how about a Barnes and Noble gift card. I read all the time and can always use them.

Then- Christmas comes around. I get an Olive Garden ( gak !! ) gift card and a pot holder...

Really?? Then she gets annoyed with me because I don't sound *excited* enough about my gifts.

So, now I'm looking at either trading or selling the gift card. Then I'll probably take the proceeds and donate them to the Animal Shelter. Seems like we could have saved a step...

The rule, the rule!

Although my mother is pretty good at following suggestions, we do find odd presents every year. This year it was one set of square dishes to go with my twelve sets of round. Oh well. I think you've got a good plan in place. Or, call the shelter and see if they want the gift card to cater in a meal for volunteers, or to use in a silent auction/raffle. Then it's less work for you, but the shelter still benefits.

How did this thread turn into preaching against puppy mills?

I can see both sides. I am, by my own admission, difficult to shop for. I prefer music from Ren Faires, I am difficult to buy clothes for & while I read a lot, I purchase a lot as well & it can be difficult to get one I don't have.
All that said, I've tried the past few years, after a plea from my mom that she's wants to buy me actual gifts, not just giftcards, to make an actual list. It wasn't that hard. I always have stuff on my Amazon.com list (Even more stuff now that I can update from my phone) & I had a few small kitchen appliances that needed upgrading. I gave my mom a specific list of 5 or so items & she purchased from that list (& even threw in a nice surprise).
Yes it would have been easier to tell my mom 'Just give me a giftcard' or ask for money. But I think my mom really enjoyed finding these gifts & purchasing them for me. I get what I want & she gets the joy of buying me stuff. Everyones happy.

The silent action is a good idea and would be easy. I'm always looking for stuff to give them. Last year, I donated a DVC weekend during Food and Wine. This would be a little extra.

IMO, just because she received it as a gift does not mean she has to gag down a meal at a place that grosses her out. This sounds like something for the regift pile. (OP, if the humane society does an auction they might be able to use this in a basket! - oops I see that's already been mentioned.)

I like the Olive Garden, but the OP clearly doesn't.

I'm really sorry for those who have experienced loss, but I'll never understand how that gives them the right to be so judgemental and nasty to people having what seem to be pretty minor irritations with their living mothers.

OP, I get it! My mother picks weird gifts that leave me wondering every year! I only wish she'd stop the gift exchanges or ask what I want and listen! I certainly don't wish her dead!

since you only ate there once...could you have ordered wrong? isn't there something you could eat or drink? If not donate it to a friend or regift it.

I didn't think the OP complained about having a mother.... I have a family member that would rather spend money on a non-wanted gift than to make a donation or another gift that can't be opened. I received workout clothing for this very reason this year:) maybe the holidays have fellow disers on edge or something, but there is no need to make anyone feel bad:(

I know you are upset, but you are personally attacking other disers...that isn't cool. There are much more important things to be upset about.
Based on the OP's signature, it appears that the poster who bought their pet at a pet store was, at the very least, needling the OP, attempting to irritate or aggravate her. Knowing the OP's feelings on the subject, that post appears to be the 'not cool' attack.

A reputable breeder wouldn't be running a puppy mill. One belies the other.

I agree.......I find this worse than when people who complain about their jobs, get the whole "Well at least you have a job".
