Why, why, why do people park SO CLOSE to another car!?!?! Three times in the past week (yes, THREE times in the past WEEK:scared: ) I've returned to my car only to find that I must slither sideways to get into it. I could barely open my car door without hitting the other car, and a couple of the cars were parked unbelievably crooked. I'm talking over the white line and so crooked that the back end of the car was nearly touching the back of my car.

I mean, really, how difficult is it to stay INSIDE the lines of your parking space.:confused3 I shouldn't have to squeeze myself between your car (that is parked over the white line and inches from my car) and my car. I shouldn't have to get dirt and grime all over my clothes because I can't get my car door open without rubbing up against another car. Anyone living in New England in the middle of winter understands what I mean about dirty cars.

I just don't get it. I can just see the person getting out of their car, looking at their fabulous parking job, and thinking "yeah, that looks good.":sad2:

I guess it's another one of those mysteries of life.

Okay, I'm done crabbing.

Oh, I know what you mean! When I was pregnant, there were a couple of times, I had to literally climb in through the passenger side to get in. I'm not kidding!

No kidding. I get to work early and I always park several spaces away from other cars (my door swings wide, plus I prefer to walk a distance). When I leave, though, it never fails; someone has parked about 6" from my door. I have been tempted numerous times to leave a note..."Next time, leave a can opener..."

Because anyone can drive. Show some ID, answer a few remedial questions, drive a half mile then on with life.

Plus there is no penalty for inconveniencing others.

I came back to my car to find someone had parked so close I could not even get to my door handle, nevemind open the door. And worse, they had parked on the handicap stripes to do so.

Part of the problem is that they are making the parking spaces smaller and smaller -- and the vehicles are getting larger and larger!:headache:

And then some people just whip it into the space without thinking about the people of either side of them.:sad2:

That drives me nuts, too. The worst offenders seem to be in my dd's preschool parking lot. The spots aren't any smaller than other parking lots in the area, but somehow, it seems that 50% of the drivers will park right on one line. Of course, one of the other 50% who parks correctly will be two spots down, so the open spots are always too small to get into.

There is one car that is parked in the same area every day, morning and afternoon, so it has to be an employee. Every single day, that car's left tires are on the line, while you could play football in the space between the right tires and the line. :confused3 :rotfl:

Anytime I pull into a space, I look to see how close I am to others. If I'm too close, I realign my car so it's as in-the-middle as possible. And this is coming from a young driver!

I think it should be a law though, that all parking lots have the same measurements for their spaces. You go to some places, and there's spots that can fit a delorean!(Ya know, the car with the "gull wing doors"). And some can barely fit a clown car. :confused3

I hate that also.. especially when trying to get toddlers into the car and buckled into car seats. I wont lie, I am tempted to open my car and put a little dent in their car.

This is why I always park out. Drives my kids crazy, but I don't want door dings because somebody else can't figure out how to park and get out of their car without damaging mine.

I just hit the cars with my doors.

It kinda is;)

It's usually found in the zoning ordinances or codes. There are specific minimum dimensions for parking spaces. Most are 9' x 20'. Spaces for compact cars are usually a bit smaller (8' x 15', I think) but they must be specifically signed as such. Parallel spaces are usually 9' x 22'.

LOL...My mom used to have a sign thanking them for parking so close and to next time leave a can opener...Except it was very explicit as to what type of can opener (lets just say its a forbidden word here on the DIS) and there was a picture of our beloved Mickey Mouse offering a little gesture to go along with the saying...LOL:rotfl:

One time recently, a very large truck parked so close to my van that I couldn't open the sliding door for my kids to get in. :sad2:

Luckily, DH had met us for dinner on his way home for work - I had to have him back my van out of the space. The truck was so close I was afraid I couldn't back out without scraping my mirror down the side.

Interesting to know that spaces are supposed to be a certain size - there is one shopping center I sometimes go to where the spaces up against the building are absolutely miniscule - we're talking a Mini Cooper would barely fit!

I think that people driving alone pull into the spots giving themselves plenty of room on the left but don't worry about the amount of room left on the right.

They probably park that way because the person on the other side was parked OVER the line....

People drive me crazy!

I was at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago, a huge pickup squeezed in between 2 cars. Meanwhile, there were 3 spaces open on the other side of the aisle. My guess is because that side of the aisle is about 10 steps closer to the store entrance.

I park way in the back of lots to avoid dents. When I say way back there must be at least over a hundred spaces between me and the next car.

More than once I have come out to find another car way out there. Of course it is parked it the space right next to me.

Go figure that one out.

ITA! It seems many parking lots were not designed for the huge SUVs so many people drive today.
