Is there anything that I need to know about security precautions or to bring with us? How far in advance should we get to the airport? We're flying out of Baton Rouge, which isn't a great big airport but does do a fair amount of business.

You will need photo ID for all adults.

I am semi-psychotic about NOT being late, so I am historically at least 2 hours (or more) early for all flights. And I did this pre-9/11 as well.

Just take your time, relax, bring a good book, and no worries.

Go to the TSA's website (TSA is the agency that does security at all US airports now) at www.tsa.gov. They have a section for people looking for info on security procedures, what is allowed in your carry-on, what is only allowed in checked bags, and what is prohibited all together. It also gives you info if you have or are traveling with someone who has medical conditions or disabilities.

Generally, if you are just doing carry-on bags and aren't checking anything, 1 hour is usually okay, and 1 and 1/2 hours is okay if you are checking bags. But since you haven't flown in so long, I'd do 1 1/2 hours for carry on and 2 hours for checked bags, just to be safe. If it takes less time than that to get to your gate, then just grab a coffee or a beer and relax until flight time, remember, you're on vacation!

BTW, I've found that all of the TSA people I've delt with to be friendly and helpful, so don't be affraid to ask a question if you aren't sure about what to do. And you will need photo i.d. for all travelers 18 and older. Kids 17 and younger do not need i.d. when traveling with adults.

It looks like you are flying over the Thanksgiving weekend. I would give yourself two hours since this is a VERY busy time. At my airport parking gets full so make sure you know where the lots are.

If you are taking a laptop or video camera you will need to take it out of your carryon, put it in one of the big bins and slide it through security.

Do not lock your checked luggage unless you have the new TSA special locks and no matter what dont' check anything valuable (Electronics, jewerly)

Be prepared to take off your shoes and jackets. (Even light sweaters count)

Thanks so much everyone! Those are some great tips! I'll keep all my valuables with me in the carryon!
