I haven't flown since 2003, help!

Ok, so it has been awhile since I have flown and I'm not sure of the updated rules (TSA). It will be me, my DH, DD, and DS. Can you pack things like hairspray, contact lens solution, meds, etc... in the check in bags? What can I carry in the carry ons? I don't think I need any liquids in my carry on bags, my children are 12 and 5. I don't want any extra delays at security. Also, we are flying Southwest and I'm wondering if I should purchase the early seating option or if the 24 hour online check in is enough to guarantee us sitting together. Thanks!!
