For years my husband had to travel with work, a lot. We saved all those airline miles and hotel points and then used them to travel together to Disney. Those vacations somewhat made up for all the evenings, meals, games, and conversations that we missed because of his work.
Now, he stays home most of the year with his job. We choose to spend the smallest amount possible on things like vehicles that just loose monetary valule. When we consider vacations, we think of them as not only memories but investments in our mental, emotional, and physical health. Research shows that people really benefit from doing things that are blissful. We find bliss in Disney.
During the year we don't eat out at restaurants very often, I happily buy clothes at Tag Sales, and my kids don't ask for "stuff." All of us would rather take two trips to Disney a year than buy video gaming systems, brand name clothes, or eating out at restaurants.
All in all, we feel like two vacations each year works for our family. Somehow Disney is the place where teenaged angst seems to melt away. It won't be that much longer that they will take vacations with us, so we make funding these trips a priority for our family.
