I have mentioned this before... you really do have to back up your computer!

One other thing that I'd like to add to your warning (if I might Alex) is.....


Have more than one tape, 3 or more is good. Having a weekly one off-site is also an excellent idea.


Have someone periodically check your backup tapes and verify them. Backup tapes can go bad and you don't know until you've trid to restore.


Do not do incremental backups. It may take longer but incremental backups are a pain in the butt to restore and can cause serious problems.

DH learned this the hard way last week....when he lost his mother board! Fortunately it's under warranty , so no expense on our end!

We have a 14 disc 5+1 RAID, auto DLT library onsite and a 6 disc 0+1 RAID live mirror for instant data replication offsite with it's own DLT (single) incremental backup rotation schedule, dual monthly images of both servers (stored in an offsite $18,000 media safe) and multiple offline replacement drives for failure-hot-swap situations...

... and I have yet to back up a PC in my life. I feel like such a rebel

I do have a few master hard drives in a box fully installed and sys-prepped with the OEM system builder kit, so I'm not totally stuck on failures.
