I have finally figured out the debate board. . .

It annoys me because it generally degerates into a name-calling argument, with no one using any debate techniques whatsoever!

but this doesn't always happen either.
Do you have any facts to back this up with? Any links? I didn't think so...

just kidding...;)

I like the debate board because many times someone will expose an angle to a topic that I had never considered. I think it is interesting.

Sure, you have to sift through the muck and it certainly isn't for everyone. (I have learned what topics to avoid reading altogether) If you are at all sensitive to disagreement and expect all will have the same way of expressing differing points of view, you will be disappointed.

I honestly think the DB is misunderstood by many. It takes time to enterpret the posting styles of others. Many times misunderstandings begin totally with the problem that the tone of the post is judged by the perception of the reader, but not necessarily the intent of the poster. If you just lurk every now and again, you miss the whole picture and occasionally resolutions to disagreements that, at a glance, seem very personal and meanspirited. I consider 95% of the people there friends (even the ones I vehemently disagree with).

Dam*, do I have to change my style now? I hope I'm in that 95%?

I love the Debate Board! So many different opinions there to read

I loooooove the religious discussions :p

The most used smilie there " "

That thing should be banned from that forum ::yes:: :rotfl:

You forgot one, Peggy.

If they smell fresh meat, they converge on you like a pack of hyenas.

... But sometimes you just can't resist replying...

Yeah, what PAW said.

I like the DB. I don't have to worry about getting pixie dust blown up my butt.

While the arguments may not change someone's mind, it certainly helps people to understand the perspective of others even if we don't agree.

I agree with PAW and RipleysMom. Believe it or not most of my first postings to the DIS were at the Debate Board ;) There was a political board I used to debate on at AOL but they got rid of it so when I found the board here I lurked for a month and then joined right in. I've never had any problems and have only been ridiculed once and that is by someone who "thought that was the way the board worked." He still posts there occasionally but I ignore him :smooth: I don't post as often on the debate board, it seems as if something is missing these days but I do still enjoy it when I find an interesting debate. The key to surviving the debate board is know your topic and stick to facts. Folks can't normally argue facts. Those who approach a debate with the idea that their point of view is the only correct one are normally the ones who have trouble. Lurking and getting to know the posting styles of those who participate really helps (as it does before joining any community online), it helps you avoid the pitfalls most newbies immediately fall into. So count me as another defender of the Debate Board.
