I have a problem, a big problem....

I have happily practiced medicine in a family business for many years. I pay rent, but don't own, and don't have to worry about hiring a CPA because someone else pays my salary (I'm an associate and can do my taxes with Turbo Tax...woo hoo, lol) and life has been good.

The head doctor sold the practice to another doctor. I met him a few weeks ago and he expressed a genuine distress that I was not Jewish (he is).

I have since been given a list of places I should frequent for lunch, dentistry, obgyn, allergist, dermatologist, nails, waxing, message....you get the picture.

Crap, I think I may have to look for another job, or venture out on my own. I feel this is so discriminatory....but I don't think I can do anything. If anyone could share stories or keep me in their good thoughts, I would be appreciative.

I wouldn't like that at all. But I'd stay until you found something better (which I'm sure you'll do). In the mean time, why can't you just say thank you for the list and then shop/frequent where you want? How will the new doc know where you frequent? Now if he had ways to know that, in addition to being ticked, I'd be worried.

ETA- Sometimes when you reveal how you really feel about that sort of thing, you speed up things/conflict and you lose control over the timing element.

I don't understand how someone you pay rent to, can tell you where to shop, eat and whom to use for Doctors??

I plan to go on with "business as usual" and look for another associate position. It is stressful.......I can't explain it, I have never had to stress over something like this. I do plan on ignoring his "list", but he is so demanding and pushy and I don't know how long I will have to stay here.

I am just waiting for the " thanks for your service, but we have found someone else....Jewish". Of course, he wouldn't say that, but I bet he is looking as we speak.

I say **** too. Many doctors are "associates", trying to avoid overhead and all the crap associated with owning your own business.

I know that some doctors give other doctors "referral bonuses". (At least that is what my neighbor --who was a pediatrician told me).

If this new doctor is used to receiving "referral bonuses" from other doctors, I can understand the list of OBGYN, allergist, etc... I don't agree with the practice, but I understand the logic behind it.

If it is a old-fashioned, old-country doctor I can see how they like to "keep things in the neighborhood" type thing. Again, I don't agree with the practice, but I see the logic as well.

I'm sure it is stressful. Hang in there with the knowledge you will find better days. What else is he being demanding and pushy about?

Save the list and if it happens the way you describe before you find another position, seek counsel. You never know, you may win.

Question..are your patients "yours" or are the shared or belong to the practice?? I am curious as to what he is demanding and being pushy about?? The list is stupid..and so is his not being happy that you aren't Jewish. Will any of your regular patients come with you whn you go?? If I was you I will get list of all the patients names and addresses...and send out postcards when you leave that you are now working at xxx place so they know. He is being stupid if he decides to let you go. He is the "new" guy on the block..and patients have no incentive to stay to see him. Good luck!!

That will probably drive off a decent percentage of the patients. I would find a different practice if I couldn't be with my children.

Start looking, because you are right. You will soon be told your services are no longer required.

LOL! I know a couple docs personally... lol! lol! They are no diff than anyone else. That always have the best jokes.. but then I get weirded out the next time I see my own doc thinking that HE thinks like that too! lol!

As for the Jewish doc... say thank you very much and continue on as normal. I would hope he has the integrity to also give this same list to his patients. I'm sure he'll be on food stamps soon if he shows his true colors.

Keep an eye on those available openings....

Keep good documentation. Why wouldn't he work Christmas and have all of the Jewish holidays off and let you do the reverse? How is that hard? Does he want all of his patients to be Jewish too?
