Hey I don't want to ruffle any feathers so let me start by saying this is not really going to happen, it is just my own imagination at work, but I have a great idea for a new ride:

Imagine a theater like Extraterssterial encounter. The theater will have similiar chairs but that is the only similarity. The theater will be a flying saucer that is going to go into space, there will be beautiful blue lights and red flashing light effects along with intense strobe lights. The seats will have a hydraulic arm that will move forward up and down and bring you all the way to the top, middle and bottom of the saucer. The bottom of the saucer will have a movie screen along with the top. The seats will move in pitch black and the light effects will make you feel like you are floating - it will make you feel like you are droping and flying depending on the screen and the lights and the movement of the seats. Tell me if you think this would be a great ride.

Later,

From you friendly frustrated imagineer.

Sounds like an updated "Mission to Mars" which is what used to be where Alien Encounter was. :)

They didn't have seats that moved up & down, though - just shook like you were taking off/landing/etc.

Fun to think up new rides, isn't it?

Aside from the moving seats, this almost exactly describes "Flight to the Moon" (later redone as "Mission to Mars"). The attaction was replaced by Alien Encounter, which used the used the same round theaters. It had circular screens above and below the audience in the center of the theater. The seats deflated to make you feel like you were being pushed into them by acceleration when the ships rockets fired. The entire theater also shook during takeoff and landing.

I loved this attraction. For its day it was very realistic, but it becane unpopular as the special effects used became more and more outdated. Ideas like yours with this moving seats might have been able to breath life into it again.

Here is a picture of the attaction from Widen Your World (a very good WDW History site). You can see the circular screen on the floor of the theater, surround by lights used for effects during the flight.
