Here is another take on your situation. You stated that you guys are very friendly at work and have worked together on and off for 10 years. If you simply ignore the invite that could be taken (by her) as rude and may have an ill affect on your working relationship. And as others have stated....depending on your settings..friends of friends may be checking out your profile. I always assume that anyone can see what I write. Therefore..I exercise caution. Just something to think about. I always prefer to be honest so that the other person doesn't have to sit and think.."Why didn't she/he accept my invite...does she no longer like me, did I do something wrong..is she trying to take my job?" LOL...honesty might not be the most comfortable option but it may save you from explanations later.

If the "ignore" doesn't satisfy, tell the supervisor that you are using Facebook only for non-work friends.

Wow, I have to tell you, this has struck home with me....

I AM a supervisor and I have about 15 of my colleagues as friends. I have never thought about this side of it and to be honest, I thought it was kind of fun to be a part of each other's real lives. You have me thinking I have made a mistake in friending them. At this point I do not remember who asked who but I have a horrible pit in my stomach that they did it because they think they needed to vs. the wanted to.....

I was a teacher for so long and always thought of my supervisor as an ally, it never occurred to me that someone thinks of me as just the boss.....

Don't be sad. I really like my supervisor and would consider her a friend. Not everyone has the same position - just because it is employer/employee situation does not mean there aren't friendships. My boss is actually moving to another office and when she does, I hope she will join us on PCC 2.0.
