I HATE Walmart! But what can I do??

I wholeheartedly agree -- if folks like edk35 spent about 6-8 hours in your shoes whether it be working at Wally World or the Bullseye store, they would be singing a different tune...

Thanks but no thanks. I will keep my day job. There are other stores out there with excellent customer service/customer satisfaction.... so it is not every retail store that has issues. Walmart used to be a good place to shop many many many years ago, but like other stores/restaurants...they have GONE DOWN HILL BIG TIME. Maybe if some of the ones lacking CS would take pointers from the CHICKFILA corporation, there would be a lot less dissatisfied customers and workers. That company knows how to train their employees.

Of course that has nothing to do with this thread.

The only two things I can think of that make Chick-Fil-A "stand out" is the otherwise scripted "It's been my pleasure" and the fact they are closed on Sundays.

The "pleasure" thing does sound nice, but after hearing it repeatedly, it makes me wonder if they are sincere, or just doing what they need to in order to make that wage.

As for the Sunday closures - great for the workers, bad for the rest of us where Sunday may be only one of our two days-off. Don't know about you, but I cetainly don't want my discount store closed on Sunday...

Of course that has nothing to do with this thread.

Indeed.

No class warfare on my part - my DH looks like the "ditch digger" from the OP's post on occasion (he's a contractor, and if he stops for something on the way home from a roofing job he certainly isn't looking his best), I've done my time waiting tables and working retail when I was younger, and we're blue collar through and through. But that doesn't mean I'm willing to accept dirty stores and rude staff for the sake of saving a few pennies, nor do I want to see our locally owned stores go under because they can't compete with Walmart's race-to-the-bottom business practices.

Whoa there! OP here: just wanted to point out that it wasn't me who made the ditch digger comment! I did make the child abuse comment, which a pp pointed out was a generalization. I agree, it was, but this post was really just a vent, I didn't intend for it to have statistical significance!

I did work as both a server in a restaurant and a cashier in a grocery store while I was in undergrad. I know how difficult those jobs are. I also know how easy it is to make a mistake, and i always respond with graciousness. Back to my original post, it was not that the mistake was made but that she deliberately tried to cover it up and did not offer any sort of apology when I asked her about it. Again, I did nothing but just politely say I would rather not wait an additional 20 min to have it corrected, I even told her to have a nice day as I left. No amount of rudeness or incompetence is worth me projecting negative energy.

I have had some good experiences in other stores that are out of town, and I am envious of those who have convenient access to those decent stores.

I will concur - if you are unhappy, please do speak up to store management or, better yet, to corporate. Griping to a cashier or a sales floor associate isn't going to get you real far. Low level employees are not taken very seriously. I always passed on the complaints, but they mean a whole lot more to management if they come from a customer. If you are not happy with what the manager says....go higher up. If you are serious enough to take it higher, you will get a response. Treating a low level employee rudely is only going to make their (probably already) bad day even worse and won't get you any satisfaction. They have no authority to do anything.
I agree. And the reverse too. If you get a super friendly or helpful store associate do not hesitate to call. I do it all the time. 2 instances that I remember in particular. I called CVS corporate about a cashier. I would shop there a couple times a week and she was usually the one waiting on me. She was super friendly and always had a smile and never complained about my ton of coupons and ecbs. About 2 weeks after I called, she was waiting on me again. She scanned my shoppers card and recognized my name. She pulled out an email that her District Manager had received from corp with a transcript of my call. She was so thankful and told me that she had worked there for 5 years and that was the first time that happened to her.

The second instance, right before Christmas last year, we were having a lot of packages delivered via Fed Ex and UPS. We were also getting a lot of snow. On two separate occasions, the UPS driver walked the package up our snow covered, looooonnnnggg and steep driveway, in the dark. He went so above and beyond the call of duty. I emailed corp and called them to thank them and him profusely. Again, about 2 weeks later he was making another delivery and thanked me for calling/emailing corp. Told me that that was the only time he knew of that someone called to compliment a driver.
