It's a small shutter release switch on a wire that plugs into the camera. Using this is to keep your hand from shaking the camera when using very slow shutter speeds.
It looks like this:
There are also wireless remote shutter releases for many cameras.
I need to get us one of those. I find with the new D-SLR the camera shakes quite a bit more than it did doing long exposures with our Kodak DC4800.
We took tons of night shots using the tripod last visit to WDW and it took a bit to figure out why our shots with the Kodak looked better than with the D70.
For some shots you can use the Timer. But Timing(like for fireworks) becomes almost impossible.
And if you camera has mirror lock up, camera should be pretty free of any shake.

Were you in the room with us last night when I said "we have to get one of those shutter release switches". My husband said "we can always use the timer" and I said "Yeah, that will be great for fireworks!"???
I have the Nikon remote shutter release for my D50. Works like a charm. Got it for $20 on amazon.com. Its kind of hard to come by. None of the 4 or 5 Ritz Camera Stores in my area had any and even when I ordered it on amazon it was on order with them. But I still got it within 2 weeks.
I was using the timer set on 2 seconds for my night shots but was still getting some camera shake. I don't have the greatest tripod in the world, but it works.
I have a wireless remote for my Digital Rebel... I think it was like $10 on ebay. Great deal, except it only works from the front of the camera, so you need to kind of reach around the front - it gets easier once you get the hang of it. And it's perfect for putting yourself in photos.
