Well, here in SoCal it's been earm enough to swim for a loooong time now. As much as I've wanetd to go swimming, i've been avoiding it at any cost so far.

But my best friend is coming out here in a week and a half and we have plans to go to our local aquatic park (they have a water slide...it's apparently awesome) and the beach....which means....that I have to get a bathing suit. I HATE HATE HATE bathing suit shopping!!! The last time I bought a bathing suit was 4 1/2 years ago (I was 16!!!) and I was 5' 3 and only weighed about 130lbs. When i got sick around that same time, I was put on 3 years of prednisone....I gained 65 lbs in the first year on it. So from the time I was about 17 until 19, I weighed 195lbs....no way in heck was I getting into a bathing suit.

In the past year, Ive lost 45+ lbs. I now weigh 149lbs but of course everything still sits in my stmach and hips. AND, a wieght loss of 45lbs in less than a year leaves you looking a lot different than before you gained the weight. I absolutely hate hate the idea of having to wear a bathing suit....especially since my best friend is extremely tiny (always has been....we've been friends since we were 3)

I have finally gotten to the point where I can find jeans that fit and look good, and I can wear jean mini skirts again but having to wear a bathing suit just makes me go:scared1:

Bathing suit shopping is the worst. You know what though? You've lost a lot of the weight. I bet you look better than you think. Find a one piece or a tankini with a small skirt and go have fun.

I feel your pain! I broke down last year as we were going to Fl. to visit friends and knew I would need a suit. I wound up at Sears (of all places) because they carry Lands End (my niece who is a little big swears by them) and got a 2 piece tankini set.

They sell them by the piece so I was able to get a bigger bottom and a smaller top. The top is the first tankini top long enough that if you move your belly isn't exposed, and the bottom is long enough that it actually covers my rump! The top had a floating bra in it as well, I can't wear just a liner top or even a shelf bra. I need REAL support ;) and the "little girl" tankini's do not provide it!

Good luck!

I'm with you on all of this!!!

I need something big enough to cover my butt, and a top that provides real support. It's amazing at how many bathing suits have NO support....with me it would be like:scared1:...lol

I have 3 rules when bathing suit shopping this time:
1. Must cover my butt
2. Must cover my stomach
3. Must provide support
oh yeah...number 4....must cost less than $100!!! (my bathing suit from 4 years ago was $60 for the bottoms and $65 for the top....I wore it 4 times!!!)

OP, Go to the QVC web site and in the search link type in: It Figures!

This is a line of bathingsuits that handle all kinds of problems with fit.

They are on the expensive size but if you're like me you don't get a bathsuit every year.

You'e not alone. I think bathsuit shopping is stressful for EVERY woman~

TC:cool1:

I just saw an article on AOL that SPANX has a slimming suit collection. The pics of the models who are all under 100 pounds is kinda misleading though....lol

If a store really wanted women to be happy buying suits they would set the lighting to low, pass out shots and have handsome chubby chasers at the door waiting to tell women how gorgeous they look when they walk out to spin in the mirror.

Of course, this wouldn't change how women look in their suits, but it would make it easier to plunk down $100 for a suit that makes us look good but feel like a sausage in a too tight wrapper;)

Just saying...

I have the same problem. I need support too. It's crazy that swimsuits don't provide it.

My list is a lot like yours. Support is #1. So hard to find.

I don't understand how so little material can cost so much!

You are not alone, believe me. But we all deserve to go have fun in the water, enjoy the gorgeous day, just live without always feeling "less than" because we are not perfect. There are very few women who feel good in a bathingsuit. We beat ourselves up. Okay, your friend is tiny. What you need to do is find a suit that you feel okay in. I am short and overweight but athletic. I've found great suits at Land's End. Many Sears stores have Land's End stuff that you can try on. Also, you can buy the top and bottom seperately, which really helps get a better fit. Tankinis can be very flattering. They also make them with different bottoms like shorts or skirts with tummy control, and they're flattering. You gained weight because you were on difficult medication, not because you have a character flaw. And my gosh, you've lost a TON of weight. BRAVO to you!!!!!!!!! Now focus on exercise and getting in shape and eating healthy and enjoying your life. Few of us look like models. Go have fun!!!! This is coming from a 52 year old woman who has felt bad about her body her whole life. Us women have to rally together and tell each other that we're wonderful right now!!! Rant over!!:)

OP you are alive & healthy...you are also very young, please don't buy into a poor self-body image. I wish I had back all the minutes that I stressed over weight. Its not who we really are and the people that care about us know this and the people that don't can go jump in the deep end of the pool or ocean......on another note Delta Burke (remember her anyone?) has beautiful clothes & swimming line....she has embraced her weight & I admire that

Trust me when I see that being thin can make for a difficult shopping experience too! I have a small chest so I can NEVER find a swimsuit that looks right. I actually have pads sewn into the bust so I can enhance that area. All the suits I ever see have plunging necklines. I have actually had to buy suits from mastectomy websites just to get that higher neckline.

No matter what our problem areas are, you can be certain that swimsuit shopping is never a good time. Fat, thin, pear shaped, etc.....we are all united!!!

You definitely are not alone!

I hate bathing suit shopping and I have been looking for a new suit since February. This weekend I went to (of all places) JC Penney and not only did I find one suit, I found two, since this never happens I bought them both. The great thing is there was a huge selection of seperates so I could choose the bottom that offers me the most coverage for my bigger bottom and something that works best on top. What I recently learned was that you are supposed to buy a bathing suit one size larger than what you normally wear in clothes, do not get hung up on the number like I did. I did what they said and I was pleasantly surprised and I even picked two suits that were outside of my norm.

Good luck shopping, I hope you find the perfect suit without all of the hassels.

Congratulations on the weight loss. I've also lost a good deal of weight in the last year. I still have the wide hips and curvy behind with a small rib cage but large "girls", so finding the right suit is a challenge. I like bikinis with a coverup.

What about doing a suit that has shorts for the bottoms? Land's end has them and I just saw them in the Eddie Bauer catalog too. Both have several different style tops as well. I know Land's End was just running 30% off their suits. Not sure if it is still going on or not.

I needed a bathing suit last month for my trip to FL.
I checked out Kohl's, JC Penney, Sears, and Macys and tried on almost every suit in my size and couldn't find anything that I liked and covered all the parts I wanted covered. I have lost alot of weight (63 lbs) but still want coverage, I am 55 years old for heaven's sake.
I also hate the halter style and I couldn't find anything that had bra strap style, everything is halter now.
I stopped into K-Mart while down in FL to get some milk and juice and there was the cutest suit on one of the manequines. I tried on a few and found one that I absolutely loved. the best part was each piece was $13.99. I got a great black and white halter with a skirted bottom.
Check out the Jaqueline Smith collection. She has spandex in most, and they cover all the parts you want covered. She also has some with higher backs that cover the spillover under your arms that are not covered in most suits. She seems to have designed suits that are age appropriate for women, not for the teens. Although she did have a few bikini styles that I didn't even bother to try on.
