I think you should let the school know about your issues (and believe me, I know what it's like to have the school ignore you) but if you demand something or say "can I have a little more extra time on this because I didn't recieve the letter in the mail" then they MIGHT understand.
BUT hey, sometimes life sucks and you have to deal with things at last minute even when they're not your fault.
I know this personally. anytime I've ever been sick my teachers "trust" my friends to give me assignments. Or I'll email them and they'll say "ask a friend" so i'll ask a friend and they'll say "oh nothing much" and i get there on school and my teachers basically give me the "well, tough luck."
and I am NOT a lazy student. I'm in honors classes and usually get A/B honor roll.
I get sick REALLY badly every year and usually my report card says "33 missing days" or some outrageous number, I mean...last year I got pneumonia which brought algebra down to a D and it stayed that way for the majority of the year because i was so far behind on homework and anytime my teacher would give my friends "hand-outs" they'd give them to me AT school the DAY they were due.
I hate to break it to you, but it sucks and sometimes you just have to deal with it.
Asking them to switch you to a different semester is a little too much in my opinion. Just ask the TEACHER for some more time (don't go directly to administration) if they can't do that, then do as much as you can of the assignment and good luck.
and I am really sorry, it does suck. Schools should be more understanding, but I doubt that'll ever happen.
