I hate having ethics

I was in Old Navy with DD a few weeks ago and noticed in the changing room across the way was an iPod touch! DS wants one really badly but... i knew if that were one of my kids they'd be beside themselves if they didn't find it so I turned it in. The lady looked at me like i had 5 heads. I just hope she was honest too.

Good for you OP. The world would be a much nicer place if more people were like you. :goodvibes

We had that happen with a shipment from Amazon a few years ago. I ordered a toy for my son and they shipped us another toy along with it. When I called, they told me to keep it.

Darn my parents for teaching me to do the right thing. I bought a Kodak Playsport camcorder for DS for Christmas from Walmart. It arrived today. The box was unexpectedly heavy for a tiny handheld camcorder. When I opened the box there were two items...not one, but two. Surprise! One Playsport and one Kodak Easyshare camera. I immediately checked my invoice to make sure I wasn't charged for the camera since I am sure (even with my spotty memory) I didn't order it. I wasn't charged! :scared1::banana:Merry Christmas to me!

Too bad I can't keep it. I want to...but I didn't pay for it. I want to keep it. Its a nice little camera...but I didn't pay for it. Darn.

BTW, I'm not looking for validation to keep it. I already called Walmart and they're sending a shipping code to send it back. Darn.

:thumbsup2

Agree with everyone else, but you already know you did the right thing. :thumbsup2

A few months ago, my husband and I had shopped at Sam's Club and when we checked out, we wanted to get $20 money back. I had gone to get a pretzel and a drink and my husband took care of checking out, got the money and receipt, folded it and put it in his pocket. He came and sat down, pulled out the receipt, and low and behold he pulled out a $100 bill instead of a $20! And no, we didn't have a $100 with us, so it could have only come from the cashier. The cashier and my husband didn't really pay attention when she was handing it to him. We remarked about our "good luck" but then lamented our morals, and returned the $100 bill. She was so very thankful and I can't imagine how she would have felt possibly being $80 short in her drawer when she counted it. My mom was a teller for almost 50 years and I know how awful she felt when her drawer wasn't right. It was the right thing to do. :) :goodvibes

Oh, and we checked the receipt and it showed $20 cash back, not $100. Wanted to add that.

Actually, the ONE place where I have found that when things like that are abandoned that they will be returned is the thrift store.

Great decision! Karma knows no season! Happened to us several years ago-ordered a health rider- received it,and then a week later, got another one.Told UPS that we had already received it.Not only does it feel good,it pays wonderful dividends.

OP, you did the right thing! I'm proud of you! :thumbsup2

It never hurts to nudge karma in your favor...

Just the other day, went into Wal-mart to pick up a couple of things. I was busy texting on my phone, and underneath I was holding a box of butter. Totally forgot about the cold thing in my hand while we waited in line and checked out. Finally realized it in my hand as I sat down in the car. So we went back in to pay for it.

On one hand, I knew I needed to pay for it (and I still forgot one item even after two trips into the store), on the other hand, I'm surprised the cashier wasn't more vigilant, because I was speaking to her.

I've probably annoyed a few people in my lifetime of being a cashier, but I'd rather make sure they weren't stealing, than left wondering as the customer walked out the door.

I used to work at a coffee shop and we had more forgotten wallets than you would think was possible. In the cases were the person was already gone, I would go through to try and find contact information. So one day, I'm doing just this (and I'm hardly being sneaky about it), when this random man comes up and starts yelling at me about stealing and how he would never buy coffee from us again. I ignored him, found the person's contact information, picked up the phone and had a delightful conversation where I let the person know their wallet was safe and sound and that I would put it away until they could come back to get it. The man stood there open mouthed for a moment and then muttered an apology and walked off.

So just in case you haven't done so, make sure your phone number is in your wallet somewhere, just in case someone has to return it to you!

DH and I had something similar happen while at Disney last week. We stopped at the ATM in DHS and there was money hanging out of the slot (about $40). DH stood there and guarded it while I grabbed a CM at a nearby store and she came and took it and turned it into lost & found.

When we used it ourselves we realized what might have happened. The machine was working, but it took almost 5 minutes before money popped out of the slot. We guess that the person who used it before thought it wasn't working and walked away. So we went to guest relations to let them know and they said they'd call it in.

Afterwards we went and used our FP for TSM, when we got to the part where the FP line and the stand-by line combine, the CM asked us how many of us in our group and then she sent us through the line on the right side of the stairs and straight to the loading area. Talk about good karma! So don't fret OP, karma will pay you back well! :thumbsup2

I'm amazed at the fact that anyone would ever consider keeping something that didn't belong to them. Ethics are so ingrained in me, not just from the way I was raised but in my job ethics are expected. And I don't believe in "karma". I do, however, believe in doing the right thing.

Had the same issue with a griddle ordered from Kohls this year. I had done so well at keeping OUT of the store and only ordering online, then I find myself having to haul this thing to the store and wait in line to "return" it. Then you get the fun of trying to explain why you're bringing it back but no, don't credit my account. The girl at customer service didn't know what to do with it! :rotfl2:

And I did call first, hoping they would say keep it but nope, no such luck! ;)

One time at my old job they accidently paid me for 8hrs i did not work. I noticed this right away bc i always worked the same hrs so my check was always the same. I told my boss that i was overpaid everyone told me i was stupid and shouldve kept my mouth shut but i couldnt. About a week later i got a letter in the mail from the company saying that there was a check i never cashed and they were sending me $200. I always tell this as a kharma story

Also more than once at bestbuy (usually around christmastime) when im buying alot of items, they have not charged me for some stuff. I go back in and pay for the stuff they missed. One time tho i didnt realize until i got home and i bought the stuff at a bestbuy that was 1hr away so i didnt go back.

I would like to say i do/did this stuff because of my high ethics but part of me does it because i feel guilty for some not so ethical stuff i have done in the past

A few years back, I found $400 outside a local school. It was in a bank envelope with some writing on it so I could use this information to verify the owner. Well, I did locate the owner and she thanked me profusely! She also rewarded me with a $25 Visa gift card.

It would have been far easier to pocket the cash. But alas, like you, I just couldn't do it...

karenos;)

Now THAT was a good deed!

Sometimes I am tempted, but that lasts all of a second. I have walked out of a store more times than I count with something that got stuck somewhere and wasn't paid for. We always go back in and pay for it.

One time, I got not one, not two, not three, but FOUR--star trek or star wars books. (I can't remember who it was!) Not only did I not order four, I didn't even order one. I called the company and I was told to keep the items. Yay! Well, NOT Yay! I found someone to give 1 to, I think my husband kept 1 and the others were donated.

Ethics are a great thing even if it isn't the easiest or most desirable option.

I agree that it is important to keep up your good ethics and teach your children the importance. Yesterday I went through the UScan at the grocery store. I had several gift cards and $50 worth of other stuff. My daughter was carrying my "ladies item" ;)and kept dropping it. I put it under my arm. I didn't notice that I hadn't paid for it and it was still under my arm until I was loading up the car. Imagine my horror when I had to go in an return that item! But regardless, no matter what it is, I would never steal it!

When my DD was younger, she loved to find things on the floors of stores. She would find the usual, pins, size tags, pieces of broken hangars, etc., and would insist on handing them over to the cashiers. One day we were at a fabric store, in line to check out, and she was crouched down looking behind a shelving unit. She jumped up and said, "Look what I found!", and held out her hand to reveal a diamond heart pendant. She wanted to keep it so badly, but we told her no, she had to turn it in, because that was something really special, and whoever lost it was probably very sad. So, when we got to the front of the line, she handed it over to the cashier, who suddenly looked very surprised, and then practically shouted, "Oh my goodness!!! Praise the Lord!!". Turns out, it was her pendant, and she had lost it months ago! And it was special, because it was the first thing she bought for herself when she went back to work after her divorce. She had been terribly upset over losing it, and was so happy to have it back, I thought she was going to crush my daughter, she was hugging her so hard! She insisted DD pick out some free candy as a reward, but DD said no. It was such an amazing lesson in doing the right thing, and she still remembers it to this day.
