I had no words

This morning I went to Dunkin Donuts to get one coffee and three bagels(not toasted, just throw them in the bag please) to go with the girls breakfast.
The total came to $4.06 I handed the cashier a five dollar bill and waited for my change. He put his arm over the cash register as if to give me my change and then...........tosses it into the tip cup! YIKES!
Granted it was 94 cents, but please let me decide if and how much I will tip.
I turned to the man behind me and started to giggle. I was stunned. Then I left. Wouldn't I have looked REALLY stupid if I made him go into the tip cup for the change?
I think it is funny now, but ....oh brother.

I would have reached in there and got my .94, that takes some nerve to do that.

What's up with all these tip jars/cups lately?

I've been noticing them all over town, at sandwich shops, Starbucks, DD, etc.

Let me decide if I want to tip or not! I don't think the person making the sandwich or pouring the coffee should automatically think their service warrants a tip!

I guess we'll be seeing them at fast food restaurants next!

This happened to me recently at a Dunkin' Donuts also. The girl stretched out her arm with change...and threw it in the cup! Then she apologized. Amazing. This goes along with the servers in the restaurants who, when they pick up my bill and money, ask if I want change! How rude is that?! You bring the change no matter what...without asking!

He essentially stole money from you. Call corporate offices and tell them you want you .94 back. Let him get away with it and you'll be tipping him 20% every time you walk in and get doughnuts and coffee. Bully tactics shouldn't be rewarded.

Hey, 20% is pretty good for just sacking some doughnuts and pouring a cup of coffee. Whether you tip him or not is YOUR decision.

They do serve food, but are you supposed to tip for someone making you a twist cone?

I have a problem with tip cups. The workers at Dunkin Donuts are not working for waitress wage which is something like $2.40. At a coffee shop in the town I live in the owner owner was saying one day the they had to raise the prices in the shop because minimum wage was raised (this was a year or so ago), which I understand, but her employees still have a tip jar in front of the register. At many of the little coffee shops around here if you get a coffee all they do is pour the coffee into the cup , you go to the counter and add your own milk and sugar, and cup cover.
I do not tip there.

I would have taken the change back and returned the food.

How dare he force you to give him a tip. All he did was put a few bagels in a bag and pour some coffee into a cup.

Geeze! Why are we tipping the people behind the counters at Dunkin Donuts and Dairy Queen, and not tipping the ice cream man, the kitchen workers at schools, the deli guy who hands you your lunch meat at the grocery store, the guy at the produce store who hands you a head of lettuce etc. ???

No way! I can see if you sat down for counter service and someone waited on you for a little while, but just to get a coffee and a few bagels in a bag handed to you!

I'm like you though, I would have been speechless too. , unless I was having a bad day.

Me too! 23% is a too much to tip, and I probably wouldn't have tipped either. It's like you said, they aren't being paid waiter/waitress wages! That would probably keep me from going back to that DD.

I rarely carry cash, but I do sometimes to pay for small things like you mentioned. (Donuts & bagels)

When a local sandwich shop started putting out the styrofoam cups with the word "Tips" written on it, I merely started paying with my debit card. This makes them work harder completing the sale, the owner has to pay for each debit transaction, and there's no ugly looks at me if I don't tip.

If they didn't have debit/credit card resources, then I either decide not to patronize them or bring in exact change, even if it's 50 cents in pennies.

I am steadfastly against requesting tips for simply handing me a sandwich and making change.

No way would I have left without my change. And I would have made the employee take it out of the cup and count it out. Then I would have chewed him out!
