So, Disney World is top shelf, anything they do, they do right. From getting you out of the parking lot to the smallest construction details, the physical plant is top shelf.

The crowds were outrageous, the lines were stupid, and the cost of everything from food to junk was ridiculous.

I sure don't expect anyone here to agree with me, but this was the most torturous seven days of my life.

I haven't read the whole thread, but looks like you got a bit of a thumpin' -- one of our monorail drivers said that he has seen days of 60-70,000 people in MK (when they close for "capacity"). I thought they never released attendance figures.

Just wanted to let you know -- I feel your pain. We did have some fun being there Thanksgiving Week, but my vow (and advice) is to NEVER go to WDW during a time that is famous for how crowded it is. I cannot believe that people will actually stand in line for 80 minutes or more for Peter Pan's Flight. We saw standby times of 120 minutes for Soarin' -- even "FastPass" lines were 20-30 minutes (or more). DD never did get on to EE -- the line just to get a FastPass was halfway to Africa!

I went on very few rides -- it was insanely crowded, altho we did see empty spaces in the parking lots. And they keep building more hotels, bringing in more people!!!

I knew better than to go at that time of year, but we were on the tail end of an annual pass (getting one last use of it) and had good accommodations at a low price (off--site, but easy to get to). But, never again!! (Unless I win a free trip with on-site lodging and park hopper passes).

I honestly don't see how anyone could just have an outright bad time at WDW. There is always something bound to make you smile at least once. I know not everyone is a big fan of Disney (including my husband) but there is more to Disney than just the rides, at least for me anyway. Sure I like going on Peter Pan's Flight and Space Mountain and all the other rides but I also love walking around the resorts wishing I could stay at one of the deluxes or just admiring all the different themes and how creative the Imagineers are. I also love going to the restaurants, of course they are expensive, that's to be expected. However, going to movies is expensive on a Friday or Saturday. It's $20 give or take (ticket plus popcorn and drink) and that's only for 2 hours of entertainment. There are ways to cut costs at Disney (plenty of threads on the Budget board) but I work hard all year so I can splurge a little on vacation and if it includes eating $8 turkey legs then I deserve it. The trip ends quickly enough where I have to go back to the real world and back to working hard to save for another trip whether it's Disney or some place else. I've been to Europe plenty of times (I have family that lives in Portugal and took a mediterranean cruise for my honeymoon) and it still doesn't replace Disney in my heart or the look of wonder that I get every time I go because it's always different or I do something that I had never done before or brings back so many wonderful memories of childhood.

I admitted that I am not a theme park guy, that I knew before I went that I was not going to enjoy it, and so I was right. Self fulfilling prophesy? Maybe. True nonetheless.

I did do a tremendous amount of research before the trip, bought Fodors, and planned each day in excruciating detail. I knew exactly what to expect, I guess I was just hoping that one of those million dreams would wipe off on me and I would enjoy it. Instead my dream was to get the he11 out.

Regarding our choice of weeks, well, school vacation and all, this was the week. I knew it would be crowded, but how the heck can the fine folks at Disney World allow 25,000 people into MK on the same day? Don't they know that's a recipe for misery? Don't they have a maximum occupancy, and then they shut the door?

I personally do not think you need to defend yourself, generally trolls keep nagging going on and on, this person here, is responding in moderation, I think a few of his phrases may be seen as rude, i see them as being direct, i would like to give the benefit of the doubt and say he is not posting for attention, he felt a way, posted but be prepared for the feedback. Now on the other hand, if he were not trying to cause trouble, what is with that particular screen name, why post on here because with a name like that and your expressed feelings, why bother to register because you will not be utilizing the boards? Wow...only 25,000 people in the MK? That's like nothing! I would have loved to have been at MK that day! The max for MK is much higher...if I'm not mistaken, it's closer 100,000 though I maybe wrong.

We are talking $42/day just to get into the park, six people six days, the admission tickets were $1500 for us. Add on airfare, hotel and food, and we easily could have gone someplace magnificent for the same money.

All in all, Grumpy hated it and everybody else loved it.

I sure don't expect anyone here to agree with me, but this was the most torturous seven days of my life.

Please please people, go somewhere else on your vacation.

I sincerely hope that you didn't ruin the trip for your wife and kids. It's sad that you didn't like Disney but I hope that you at least got some type of enjoyment in the fact that your family had a good time!

You are entitled to your opinion however I will pray for you! LOL! I personally don't understand how a person can be down on Disney but I suppose there could be one or two of you out there. The important thing is did your wife and kids know how you felt? I really hope you made some great memories with them for the kids sake. Life is so short---you blink your eye and it is over. There will come a day all your kids have of you is memories and I hope they are great ones. I know this because I am experiencing this now. My memories with my mom are great but not many happy memories with my dad. Enjoy life with your family and no it doesn't have to be at Disney. If it is at disney act like it is the best thing in the world.

I'm sorry you felt that way! My husband felt that way before our very first trip to WDW, then we got there and he changed his mind completely! You have to plan, plan, plan! We planned on eating breakfast and dinner in our hotel room (dh brought his compact camping grill to grill dinner and we had a refrigerator & microwave in our room) and we would eat lunch at one of the parks or at our hotel everyday we were there. That saved us lots of money! And we planned our vacation when the park was least crowded. This was mine and my 3 yr old son's first WDW experience and we wanted to be able to take everything in and enjoy it without the crowds, it helped that we stayed on site because we got to do the early entry days. Our son has autism and it was the first time he came out of his skin and actually became a typical child! To me the best part of WDW was watching it through the eyes of my son! To see this child stuck in his own world, light up the second he saw and experienced everything at WDW was worth all the money in the world!

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, WDW is not for everyone, but as other posters have mentioned it takes a lot of planning to have a magical time and many people have been converted to WDW lovers once they give it a fair chance. There is nothing any of us on the DIS can say or do to change your mind, that is the way you feel and that is okay, but I would like to address a few things you mentioned:

"$42/day just to get into the parks", now of course you actually got a good deal but this is because you bought a multiday pass, it costs just as much ($65 single day passes) for the Universal Parks, Busch Gardens and Sea World, as a matter of fact Sea World just increased their prices.

"the cost of everything from food to junk was ridiculous." Have you gone to the movies lately? Movie food is much more expensive than WDW food, I personally find the food prices fairly reasonable at WDW (except for buffets).
Food at any kind of event, whether it be a sports event, the county fair, or a theme park will be higher than you would see at a local restaraunt in your home town.

"we easily could have gone someplace magnificent for the same money." WDW is magnificent, but it is all in the eye of the beholder.

Like I said before, you have a right to your opinion but since you posted on the DIS boards, we have a right to respond to your comments.

The way I look at it is right now it's about showing my kids the best of a world I love... Disney.... I have take them to other places... sea world, universal... and spent just as much money, yet didn't have as much fun.

And why of all places to complain would you come here and tell us not to go... most of us have been there... at least once.... most more than once...
I have budgeted other vacations... .and doing a package deal at disney comes in at one of my lower budgeted 2 weeks vacations, so why wouldn't I do it.

Oh wel... I hope you didn't voice this opinion to them during the trip... may have made for a downer for them and stopped them from having fun

Relatively speaking I don't care for WDW much either - but I get excited about going, excited about planning (I am the planner - DW is totally hands off - she just wants to enjoy the trip) because my family gets excited. DW, DD8 and DD4. DDs are all into princesses and Pooh and stuff. That's all it matters.

Sure, each trip can cost five grand for 4 of us staying at WL, including airfare, and we can go anywhere in the world with that kind of budget - but will the kids enjoy it? Probably not.

So, we go to WDW every other year (planning to anyway) and the off-Disney years we will do international trips (so kids can have some exposures other than Disney). It's a compromise and everyone's happy - at least until the kids are older into their teens.

Sounds like you either didn't plan the trip right or tried to do too much at once. No matter where you go, if you try to pull a Griswald vacation, you will never enjoy it. If the park is packed, go enjoy other parts of WDW. They call it World for a reason.

Ok, I skipped several posts so if I am repeating someone...SORRY! My question's to the OP...

The only real complaint I noticed was the price of everything. Did you have a package? Did you use the Dining plan? For me to take a family of 4 to Disney for 8 days/7 nights...staying at POP and having an 8 day park hopper ticket each and being on the dinning plan...I am spending $2800 & that is during PEAK season. Granted we will drive since God didn't give my DH wings yet...but we will park it once we get there and not see the car again until time to leave. You can't hold Disney responsible for the airfare.
There are going to be lines at any theme park...but at least you can use a fast pass.
The prices are compareable to any theme park...IMO

I am sorry you did not enjoy yourself. But hopefully you can take comfort that your DW and kids had a good time. Maybe if they talk you into going again you can take some DIS classes and be better prepared and enjoy yourself a little.

We keep booking other vacations only to cancel them and end up at WDW. We all love it!

I have been to Paris. It was all right but give me Disney any day. I have 5 years of french under my belt so the language wasn't a problem. I just didn't like the heat, the filth etc. Plus it takes a lot fewer hours on a plane to get to Disney than it does Paris.

I did love Italy however. England was too expensive.

Seriously, my husband might pick 100 other places to go on vacation than Disney World. But, I am so thankful he goes almost every year with the best attitude. Knowing that it makes my and our children happy. I am a SAHM, so he works HARD to provide and then lets us spend our vacation money on trips to Disney.
