I guess YOU are supposed to tell Disney Store CMs about our discount!

I received the latest on-line newsletter from the DVC today, which included this mind-boggling tip about ensuring that you receive your 10% discount when shopping at the Disney Store:
"Shopping at The Disney Store near you? Be sure to present your Disney Vacation Club Member Card and receive 10% off your purchase. If the cashier is not aware of this discount, please ask to speak with a manager. If the manager is unable to assist you, please contact Member Services so we can ensure the store is aware of this discount in the future."
Huh? Can't they send a memo?

I think MS has received several complaints from members regarding the DVC discount at the Disney Store. There is no doubt in my mind that TDS procedures include info on the discount. Perhaps they HAVE sent a memo - actually, probably LOTS fo memos.

Having worked in a large, multi state corportation, I know how hard it is to get everyone to follow procedures. I used to hate getting multiple reminders on things just because someone else messed up. (I now believe a large percentage of employees forget how to read after they are hired. Ours had to pass a test to get hired so I know that they knew how at one time, LOL).

Anyway, there are probably only a few stores that are causing most of the problems. I think the VM blurb was just an attempt to let members know that they are indeed, definitely entitled to the discount, and that some DS CMs may not know about it. JMHO. YMMV.

Usually the problem is that the CM doesn't know how to ring up the discount. Disney Club cards scan but DVC cards do not. I have had new CM's turn to another CM and ask if DVC gets a discount and how much. The next question is usually "how do I do this."

Hey!! My name is Eddie and I am a manager at the Gainesville Disney Store :-) In response to your 10% discount here is the low down...
ALL GUESTS PROVIDING US WITH A VACATION CLUB CARD WILL RECEIVE A 10% DISCOUNT ON ALL MERCHANDISE AT THE STORE. This is actually one better than the Disney Club card...you see we are not supposed to give a discount on beanies to Disney Club members, but Vacation club members gets EVERYTHING!

If for whatever reason, the Cast Member does not know what is going on let them or the manager know that they do the same thing on the register as the Disney cClub, but use the number "55" as the account number since our cards do not swipe on the Disney Store registers. For the expiration date tell them to use the current month and year...
Hope this helps!!!

I didn;t know that Eddie, thanks a lot for passing on that tip. I have both cards and have been wondering about renewal, now I defiantely will not! Thanks a bunch!

Pumbaa.... The only good our DC does for us now is a discount on passess other then the UPH. The discount we get on our 4 AP's alone for our family pays for the DC. If only DVC would give us a AP pass discount I wouldn't renew my DC either.

The most frustrating thing for me is when DH buys one of the collectibles and they tell him that these don't qualify for the DVC discount (WRONG!!). Of course, he just accepts that answer and toddles home....

When we were at WDW a few weeks ago, the stores at Downtown Disney refused to use the DVC card. They would only accept the DC card. Does anyone know if this was correct? If so, it might pay to renew the DC card to use for shopping at Downtown Disney--if you do a lot of shopping there.

greekboy32,
Oh, this is so cool you are a CM! I was wondering, does this 10% DVC discount apply to Disney Dollars, too?

-DC :)

Yes, that is true. Quite odd but our DVC card doesn't give us a discount in the village. That is why we have this card because we buy alot in the village, along with our passes.

Hey DC!
Disney Dollars are never ever discounted...CMs don't even receive a discount on these...great question!

It's been a long time since I came across a CM at TDS who wasn't familiar with DVC.

Our DVC discount also isn't good if ordering through the Disney Catalog, either through the brochure or online. I don't think either existed when we became members 10 years ago.

It never was good at Downtown Disney.

At least we get a discount on all merchandise at TDS, including collectibles.

Huh? Can't they send a memo?

Even though TDS may send memos, if there aren't very many members in a location, it could be that its been a long time since the CM read the memo. Last DVC count I saw for Colorado was 22. Since its been a few years, hopefully it's higher now, but I don't expect the CM to be familiar with the DVC discount. I've NEVER had a problem receiving the discount, but the CM often has to ask someone how to do it on the cash register.

Actually we don't get the discount on the collectibles anymore. I called MS last year on this when a local DS wouldn't give me the discount.

It doesn't make much difference now since most of the DS's don't carry the collectibles anymore.

I don't know if that's entirely accurate. I get discounts on everything, including pins, beanies and snowglobes, at TDS. These are all considered "collectibles" when it comes to the DC discount, and are excluded.

No they don't accept DVC, but they do accept DC, AP's and American Express for a 10% discount (min $25 purchase). The DC card gives you discounts on passes, which is the main reason I keep it, $15 per AP. Plus the discounts with National, I saved over $40 on my last rental. Also free Disney Magazine (worth $10 per year).

When I went to work today I pulled out the Standard Operating Procedure regarding DVC cards, and it says that members get discounts on everything in the store except Passports, tickets and disney dollars.

You are corrrect Figment, the stores are pulling away from collectables, in fact there will soon only be 4 stores nationwide with the collectables, but if you land upon one of these stores and they refuse to give the discount...kindly ask the manager to please re-read the Standard Operating Procedure and you will find that you are good to go :-) Hope this helps
