I guess the cast of Jersey Shore isn't white enough for A & F

I am an Italian from NJ who spends a lot of time at the Jersey Shore and I think that the cast of that show is a complete embarrassment. I don't find them to be an accurate representation of Italians or NJ residents. I do, however, agree with PP who pointed out that they are a great example of moronic trash.

Perhaps not of Italians or NJ residents, but the cast of Jersey Shore seems to be a fairly accurate representation of a small but not insignificant percentage of the Seaside Heights crowd. Yes, they're moronic trash, but certain clubs there depend on such patronage, despite half-hearted attempts by city officials to discourage such behavior.

Seaside Heights has its unique brand of sleazy charm. Everyone should visit at least once.

As for A&F, they should be proud if the cast is wearing their clothes. There's no such thing as bad publicity in these matters.

I've only seen the show about 15 minutes at a time a handful of times but what I've seen matches my memories from 30+ years ago.

I'm still stuck on "painfully white". As compared to "comfortably white"?

Ummmm....my cousin who is Italian (and as much of tanning bed user as the cast of the Jersey Shore) worked in the local store and was a model for A&F a couple of years ago so they definitely don't discriminate that way.

Actually, I'm really surprised that the cast of JS wears clothing with logos showing. Normally, you have to be very careful not to have any type of logo when appearing in any type of television show or movie. If you wear something with a company logo, it is possible that the production would have to pay the logo company for the use of their logo.

Even when I've done Disney shoots, they always make the extras remove any clothing with a logo other than Disney.

I've never watched JS. The idea just doesn't appeal to me. Maybe things are done differently on a reality show, but it seems odd to me.

Abercrombie & Fitch (I think they own Hollister too) has actually released the following particularly offensive request aimed at the a the Jersey Shore cast. So I've been to A & F and the best words I can use to describe their stuff is painfully white & upper middle class. It's in everything, from the kids who work there who seem hand picked to have a very Angelo all American look to the partially nude hairless pictures of very northern European models in all the ads, on the bags and on the walls of the place. I've never been a fan of the whole preppie thing but whatever, sometimes my kids would ask for something and sometimes I'd get it.

SO I used to be a kid who would flock to the Jersey Shore during the summers and the one thing most kids there DID NOT have in common was being Northern European upper middle class... THOSE kids did the Hamptons.

So imagine my surprise while I was getting ready to take the kids shopping for back to school stuff today,(we start 8/29) and just happened to sit down to look at the news to and realized we were all uninvited to buy or even wear their stuff. Nice, I guess I won't trouble them with my money then. As I recall American Eagle is in the same mall. :snooty:

I don't blame them one bit. It has nothing to do with the cast's ethnicity, either. Why do you assume it does?

There are reasons we called it Sleaze-side Heights growing up.

:lmao: Oh, sweet irony.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

So what are Italians then? UNCOMFORTABLY Caucasian? :lmao:

My background is all British Isles. I must be excruciatingly Caucasian. :rotfl:

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Me too. I'm thinking of adding "painfully white" to my signature. Hell, maybe I'll add it to my business cards.

:rotfl::rotfl:

I'm still stuck on "painfully white". As compared to "comfortably white"?

I'm with you. My DD has very, vary fair skin. I'm thinking maybe I should give her some Motrin tonight to help with the pain. :confused3:laughing:

I was super white, but I've been swimming a lot and now I'm brown. Neither are painful, but brown tends to itch. :confused3

I'm only partway through and am kind of shocked how many people got a A) caught up in race and B) misunderstood.

so painfully white meant painful as in how this store has been giving off vibe of being a retail version of old-school "selective social clubs" for a while now, there have been lots of eruptions regarding A & F and their business practices, hiring practices etc going bavk years, this one thing is not in a vacuum.

"not white enough" alludes to the absurd notion that some people are more "whatever" than others, like what some had to say about the first African American Miss USA or our current President. the notion is beyond stupid and I'm calling them out on it, not advocating it.

anyone who is unfamiliar with the fact that some look down on Italian Americans hasn't been around the block.

---guess I have more reading to do, this is quite the runaway train

You have 11 pages of people who disagree with you. I don't think anyone misunderstood anything.

Do you really think that they don't want to be associated with the show because most of them are Italian and not because they're a bunch of drunken idiots?

Oh Good Grief. Please just stop

See the thing I don't understand is a couple years ago when jersey Shore first came out A+F came out with a bunch of T-shirts with Jersey Shore catch phrases. So it's okay for them to use Jersey Shore catch prases, but they can't wear their clothing?

Here is a link to the shirts.

A company can change their mind. When the show came out, it was bad, but nothing like the junk that happens now. It wasn't as popular then... now more people watch (or at least, hear about it). As such, it would make sense that a company would reevaluate their stance on things.

people disagree with me about what? The fact what A& F said ticks me off, who are you to tell me what should or shouldn't tick me off and why do you even care? I don't care if people disagree but that doesn't mean I'm wrong because it's just an opinion. sheesh, I posted I'm ticked, why I'm ticked and mostly what I got was stuff about what white is and how trashy the JS cast are,so what. Why do so many care anyway? I know, fall TV hasn't started yet.

This has been a very peculiar and entertaining thread... Especially the fact a few particular posters seem to be making it a bit of a crusade... Not much going on in your world huh.

PS- just so I'm clear, I only explained myself for the people who seem to think I meant to be hurtful, not for the other sort.

that would be a yes, they wouldn't dare say such a thing if it was any other group. again just my opinion

I do have a general tendency to get ticked whenever any group gets singled out, whether I agree with what they are about or not, in this case its a bit personal.

So, you say you are just upset and how dare people say you are wrong... and then you post THIS? What proof do you have that this is because they are Italian American and not just a bunch of drunk idiots?

You do realize that brands have to protect their images and Jersey Shore has become a joke?

All I know is that in no way, shape, or form would myself or anyone I know want to be associated with the cast of Jersey Shore either... and it's not because they are Italian American.

Not really, I'm more of the opinion that anyone who tells someone else their opinion is wrong sort of thinks a bit too much of themselves for my taste. say you see it a different way, sure, say someone is wrong, well that's something else and I don't necessarily have to be the someone in question.

The entertainment industry is full of drunk idiots, addicts and people who sleep around how many people have actually been asked to NOT wear their stuff? I bet its a short list
