I got that dreaded phone call yesterday!

I got the parent's worst nightmare phone call yesterday that my son was in a bad car crash! He was driving with 3 other teens in the car. The 3 that had their seat belt on are okay. The one boy not wearing a seatbelt was life-flighted to a nearby city! I'm sick about the whole thing. It feels like I'm walking in a trance! I haven't gotten an update on the boy who was hurt today. As of last night they were still doing tests but had a confirmed broken wrist, arm and bruised lung. I feel so responsible because my son was driving. It was a narrow country road and he swerved to not hit a car and misjudged and rolled the car. I'm sure he was going too fast, too. Luckily, his cell phone was at home (broken) so I know he wasn't on the phone. He's young without the experience of all driving situations. Now, I'm second guessing myself that I ever let him drive with anybody else in the car!

I just had to "talk" to someone because I feel so horrible and to remind everyone to wear their seatbelts!

:hug::hug::hug:

How terrifying! So glad to hear the 3 boys are safe! I am praying the other boy recovers quickly.

Thank you for your prayers! I miss the days when my kids were safe in their cribs! It's so hard to parent teenagers and keep them safe while letting them be independent!

I am so sorry that your family is going through this.

Accidents can happen, even to the best of drivers. It's so unfortunate that the other boy wasn't wearing a seatbelt...perhaps this will serve as a reminder to other drivers to make sure that all of your passengers buckle up! How is your son coping?

OMG, what a nightmare for you! This is one of my biggest fears.

I am so happy for you that your son is okay and that so far it looks like all will be okay. :grouphug:

PLEASE parents, please tell your kids how important it is to take responsibility for those riding in their vehicle. Everyone follows their rule of wearing a seatbelt or they don't ride with them.

I am an attorney and I will tell you the same thing I tell my kids...I have seen families destroyed financially and emotionally by these things, please reiterate to your kids how big of a responsibility driving with others is.

This is my worst nightmare too. Positive thoughts and prayers for the boy. My son is 17 just got his license and we haven't allowed friends in his car yet. Hate reading stories like this. So happy your son and the others are OK. This is so scary. Hugs

That is how I am. Anyone who doesn't want to wear a seatbelt must exit my vehicle. No exceptions.

This needs to be repeated!

OP, sorry for your news. We survived 3 teenage drivers and it's a tough thing to deal with. Here in CA, young drivers are not allowed to have minor passengers in the cars anymore.

Sadly there are many adults who don't use seatbelts. Sometimes our group from the office will go to lunch and there are 2 or 3 that don't buckle up.

This is so scary! I have a son who's still trying to figure out the driving thing and it makes me nervous.

I'm glad that it wasn't worse.

I'm so sorry! I hope that the boy who was hurt will be OK. Do not assume that your own son is OK ... be watchful for neck and back pain in the next couple of days .

OH honey so sorry :hug:..I have a 17 yr. who and she is driving and I fear the same thing. Luckily she is only allowed one other kid in the car that is not a sib.

I hope things get better and the other kid is ok. sending {{{good vibes}}}:hug::hug:

If I can say this delicately I know you are concerned about the health and well-being of the kids involved, but please immediately seek out an attorney at this time. While these kids may be 'friends', it is amazing what happens once medical bills come in for these other boys. Long time friends/families suddenly become sworn adversaries. You need to protect your home and financial accounts. I know it is something you don't want to hear right now, because as a mom you have more pressing concerns, but believe me this is a phone that hopefully you have already made, and if not need to make not later than the end of business today.

First of all  for you and your family. I hope that the injured boy will be okay. The days ahead may be rough for your son being the driver - stay strong - he'll need you.

That is how I am. Anyone who doesn't want to wear a seatbelt must exit my vehicle. No exceptions.

Please let your kids know that unbelted passengers can injure them as well. This is especially true with passengers that feel they don't need to wear a seat belt in the back seat. Unbelted backseat passengers can seriously injure other passengers in a crash. Unfortunately this goes for dogs, too. A restraint for a dog may not be high on everyone's priority list but in a crash a dog can seriously injure you or your passengers.

If I may post this link (?) - it has some compelling info for teens about seatbelt use.

OP-- I have and a teen who has been driving for over two years, and it's still scary. I am so sorry your family is dealing with this. Thanks for the reminder to tell our kids--no seatbelt, no ride.

You are so right. My thoughts and prayers are with the OP and the young man who was injured.
