My temple has a lecture series every year and tonite's speaker is Leonard Nimoy. As a temple board member, I get to meet Mr. Nimoy prior to the lecture and at a reception afterward.

The lecture is open to the public and any DISers who are interested are welcome to come. Send me a PM and I will give details.

Some of these lectures have been really interesting. We have had Mariio Cuomo, Morris Dees (the head of the Southern Law Poeverty Center), the God Squad, the lady who won a major libel case against a Holocaust denier and others.

oooh, I am so jealous! he's talking about Shechina, right? his controversial new book?

BTW I've never met Father Tom, but Rabbi Gelman --- well, his is the other synagogue in my neighborhood.

Sounds like you have an interesting evening ahead of you.

Excellent!

SSB met him briefly once in Chicago, and he was very nice.

Should be an interesting time!!! Let us know!

Oh wow! I'm so envious! He seems like such an interesting man

Whatever you do, DON'T ask for a demonstration of a Vulcan Mind Meld.:teeth:

His topic will be on spirituality in popular culture. It is interesting but Gene Rodeenberry did not believe that humanity would need religion by the time we got into space and did not put any emphasis on it in the original show. Later when Berman took over the franchise, sprituality was explored and one of the aspects that I personlly liked about DS9 was the concept of the effect of religion. If no one else discusses this topic in the Q&A after the lecture, my wife intends to bring it up.

Leonard Nimoy was great. He was very funny and interesting. He re-enacted the Rabbis do the priestly blessing from his childhood that was the basis for the Vlucan sign for Live Long and Prosper. It was very entertaining.

One other story that was funny was the fact that Mr. Nimoy was told by the Director of Golda (a miniseries where he was nominated for a emeny as best supporting actor) that he was casted over the objections of the director because the director wanted a Jewish actor. Evidently, that director thought Ingrid Begman (who won the enemy as best actress) was Jewish.

Wow!! Could you tell him I said "Live long and prosper"???
