I saw one of the 2...yes two gators that lives in MK near Tom Sawyer Island, where the Mike Fink Keel Boats used to be. I saw him last week while I had family down. I was walking to BTMRR on the bridge that runs from Liberty Square to Frontierland. I was looking in the water near Splash Mountain and there it was.... I couldn't believe it!

a CM told us 3 lived there ! we however didn't see any - thankfully - Michelle

How can they even let them live there? It must be a great danger...

Actually they are probably quite harmless as they are more afraid of people than the other way around. I haven't seen them but I'll bet they are less than 5' long and are not in a place where someone could just walk up to them with a piece of hot dog and hand feed them. Of course, feeding them anything is a bad idea.

I'm sure that the Disney folks will remove them when they get too big or ornery. For all we know, they were put there on purpose by Disney!

And HEY, they sound like a good add to the flavor of the Rivers of America!!! Alligaotrs are pretty common in Florida.

IDEA: We should name them!!! We could call them Nero and Brutus, after the crocs in The Rescuers!

Not in MK but DH and I saw one on the Osprey Ridge golf course and we were told that there are a bunch around and WDW will remove them once they get to around 6 feet long.

Beach Club also has on. There was something a while ago about not being able to remove him. They are counting on people using common sense:p

That's too funny, walt's assistant!!:teeth: :teeth:

Friday, last week and saw it, she at first thought it was fake, and than realized it hadn't been there before, and quickly had everyone look! She is a Native Floridian and has seen plenty, me too!;)

I'm pretty sure they do remove them if they're in an easily-accesable (for people, that is) area. I've heard of animal control people being called in to relocate an errant gator. I'll bet the ones who've taken up residence in the parks or resorts are watched pretty closely.

As for the golf courses, it's pretty hard to avoid seeing alligators on Florida golf courses...

With over a million American Alligators in FL, and the Rivers of America being connected to the open waters of Bay Lake via the Seven Seas Lagoon, there are countless numbers of them able to swim in and out as they like. They are not a threat to people, and if they turn up in guest areas or are larger than 5', WDW Pest Management removes them to non-guest areas. Gators grow rather quickly, and are highly mobile. I have seen several near TSI over the last 4 years, and even though I only saw 1 at a time, I am almost totally certain that the first one I saw and the second, third, fourth and so-on were each a different animal. To say "I saw the gator that lives in MK" is like saying "I saw the dolphin that lives at Daytona Beach. They're around, they are closely monitored, and the only thing anyone needs to worry about is making sure that they don't feed their turkey leg bits to any large reptiles, a practice that will certainly lead to problems no matter where you are (you think the birds are bad?)

Thanks KSgirl! I'll bet Nero and Brutus are the only two alligators in WDW with a thread devoted solely to them!

HI! Well, I just thought it was rather amusing that I actually saw one...since I have been looking for so long! :)

Just got back today. my daughter spotted one in the canal between boardwalk & mgm. For thosew who say they are harmless, a 12 year old boy was killed in central florida last week by one of these harmless creatures...i say round 'em up.

There is an alligator in the canal at BCV. Lots of DVCers discuss it. It has become an attraction in itself! Last fall my mom, sister and I had a room right over the canal and spent each morning watching the gator, also some very large turtles.
I hope everyone is smart about just looking and not feeding the gators.

They are harmless to adults as long as you don't encroach on their habitat. Small children and other small mammals they may consider as prey (dogs appear to be their favorite snack here in Gainesville), but it is extremely rare that they will attack a human without some sort of provocation. Of all alligator attacks that do occur, less than 4% are fatal. Numbers are very similar to attacks by sharks, although the fatality rate in that case is close to 2%. There have been around 10 deaths caused by alligators in the last 50 years.

Some people believe that alligators on Disney property are tame, and attempt to feed them or even place their children by them to take cute pictures. Although I haven't heard of any serious incidents occuring there, doing something like that is obviosuly not smart.

Don't you need to cross this water to get to TSI? Do the gators ever get on to the island?

I thought letting the kids run around the island would be fun....:bounce: Is this something to be concerned about?

Gators wouldn't be a problem unless they have either been fed by humans (which causes them to be less fearful of people, as is their natural instinct). They start to view humans as a source of food. They don't know the difference then between the hot dog their feeding them, and the hand/body that's attached to the hot dog.

That child, unfortunately, invaded the gators territory, not the other way around. Gators, like most animals, will attack when they feel threatened. I feel terrible about the boy, but it was reported he knew the gator was there and was throwing rocks at it, and continued to stay in the water (and threaten it), even when he knew it was there. (his friends apparently literally pulled him out, only to have him run back in, twice it was reported)

It would be impossible to "round them up" as there are, as Steve said, over a million of them, with more everyday. Even with all of them, attacks are very rare and generally occur only when a gator has become less fearful (because he's been fed by humans), or someone makes the mistake of stepping into her nest. I don't swim in the lakes, nor would I allow my kids, and I have no fear of being attacked at all. My kids know if one comes after them, run like heck in a zig zag pattern! :)

Common sense and being aware are key here. :)

As a side note, not only is it a bad idea to feed a gator in the wild, it's against the law.

I will need to keep a look out for them!!

It's only rare until it is your child....I still say when one is spotted, it needs to become luggage.
