Today on the radio i heard about 3 times that the dreamgirls is coming out with the new hit song by beyonce! what the heck? the producers wrote beyonce a song that wasnt even in the broadway show so they could push her in front of jennifer hudson, who clearly has the showstopper song of the movie. this is just wrong. i guess its about money though, and not about what the broadway show as originally about. I know jennifer hudson is in a huge movie and wouldnt be in it at all if she wasnt on american idol, but i think its unfair that beyonce had them write her a song, and they are promoting a song that was never intended to be the breakout song of dreamgirls. it seems so fake to me.

Jennifer Hudson is getting lots of Academy Awards buzz - I wouldn't feel to sorry for her. :)

Yeah, but we'll see who will really get the award. I'm so sick of always seeing Beyonce in the spotlight. Give someone else a chance to show their talent.

It's only Jennifer's first film and all the buzz I've been hearing is about her performance and about Eddie Murphy's performance. Jamie foxx and Beyonce are usually mentioned as an "also ran". I wouldn't feel too badly for J-Hud...she'll be just fine.

I know what you mean. I hope that Jennifer feels justified in all of the Oscar Buzz that she is receiving. I saw Beyonce do an hour long interview the other day. And yes I do like her songs and think she looks fabulous (and has not been one of the bad girls of Hollywood), but she did seem a little "perturbed" that her part in the show is a little "less" than others. She said something about "yes, I don't have the big song and I may not have a lot of lines - but that's ok because I have already proven myself..." I do think that the extra song was written to give her more in the show. Nevertheless, the show is supposed to be great no matter who is the star - and I'll be there front and center on Christmas day :goodvibes

It always bugs me that whenever the movie promo runs they mention starring Beyonce, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx only when Jennifer Hudson is the one getting all the buzz. I like Beyonce too, but I don't think they should snub Jennifer in the promos or the actress in the group. I'm glad Jennifer is finally getting some notoriety. Beyonce should allow someone else to shine. It's not all about Beyonce. I do wonder if it's not Beyonce's people rather than Beyonce clammoring for more attention though.

I seriously doubt Jennifer Hudson has any problem at all with the previously more famous people getting more attention. This is her big break and the "bigger stars" are bringing in the crowds so she can have her day.

I understand what you are saying - but whose performance will we all remember years from now!? :sunny: I'm thinkin' not Beyonce's.....

they wrote a new song for the movie because none of the songs bfrom the Broadway production would qualify for a "best song" Oscar.

of course the song went to Beyonce, she's the star of the movie. jennifer Hudson's role is a "supporting" character. but the role she's playing has a real show stopper number, and she's getting lots of buzz because of that, and that it's her first film, and that she's a former AI contestant.

Exactly.

The other names are used in promotions because they are names that sell a movie.

This is not about Beyonce and her ego-it is about the movie studio and what they think will get people in the theater seats.

Jennifer Hudson wasn't picked JUST because she was on American Idol. She had to audition for the movie part along with 700 others (according to what she said in an interview I saw). So, she's not as big a name YET as you think she is. But, this movie is pushing her in the right direction.

Plus if you don't follow Idol, chances are you don't know who J-Hud is in the first place (I sure don't, because I don't watch Idol, I only know about her from Oprah). From a marketing stand point, you give those with name recognition top billing, regardless of the roll they have in the film.

Beyonce, along with Eddie Murphy, are the 'names' of this movie. Jennifer Hudson will probably get the same treatment from now on if "Dreamgirls" is not a one hit wonder. You can believe the publicity wheels and her agent's wheels are spinning and spinning fast.

Oh, Beyonce always talks about how she had to down play her singing talent for this role. She's letting us know that she can sing like Jennifer too, but unfortunately, she did not get the "big" number. I just find it interesting that she even has to say that. I think it must be hard for her to not be getting all of the attention.

Don't cry for Jen, she'll be fine. This kind of spin keeps people talking and will reflect in big returns in the box office. It's working!

The continuing "cat fight" bs gives me the creeps. No one expects a fight between Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, the first being a failed singer and a superstar against a platinum record seller and an Academy award winner. It always seems to be woman against woman... so typical.

Oh please

I don't know, I've heard Jennifer Hudson makes Beyonce look like a no-talent hag in that movie.

Well its funny that i even started this thread, i'm not even interested in seeing this film! But i do think that "I'm telling you" is the hit song of the film, the beyonce song that they wrote for her was never in the original broadway show, it was only written for her so she could compete with jennifer hudsons showstopper. I read a review of the film and the title was "The singing in this film makes up for a lack of acting" ouch! I hope eddie murphy does better in this one than he did in "haunted mansion", he was awful in the death scene with his wife, it was almost laughable! that is one film that Disney should definitely remake!

This is funny to me, because if you know what the Broadway show is about, this is exactly what happens in the story. This is simply life imitating art.

Exactly! In order for a song to be considered "Best Original Song" at the Oscars, they have to write a new one that was not in the original production. Of course it would go to Beyonce as she is the known "singer" of the group as well as the star of the movie. She has the most clout publicity-wise to pull the Oscar nomination.

FYI: In the original Broadway production, Effie, (Jennifer Hudson's character) would end the first act with her showstopping number that would literally send chills down the audiences' spines every night. Jennifer Holiday, the original Effie, would receive minutes of applause each night, she was that great. (I know I was there. I had the privilege of working in that theatre for 3 years. I would watch her.) But in the first weeks of previews of that original Broadway production, Effie was killed off halfway though the second act. THAT'S how little of a supporting role she had, (even though she had the voice.) It was considered too much of a downer, so they changed the ending.

I think the media is really hyping this supposed tension between Beyonce and Jennifer. And you just don't see this happen as much with men actors. I haven't seen too many articles asking Jamie Foxx if he feels threatened by Eddie's awards buzz!
It's too bad because they are both talented, beautiful women and no doubt will have careers long after this movie is done. So I say good for them both. Can't wait to see it!
