I don't understand why its such a big deal to take your children out of school..

Ya, that works for like 2 hours before the parks are flooded with people. Then what, by 11:00 am your back at your hotel in the pool for the rest of the day? I still don't believe that you don't wait in lines during peak season. I think you are kidding yourself if you think we are going to believe that.

Believe what you will...all I know is that it doesn't take "off-season, cheaper, cooler weather" to make a fabulous WDW vacation. I think it IS sad that so many justify taking their children out of school for those very reasons, but to each his own. As a teacher myself, I find it disheartening that any teacher (except in extenuating circumstances) would take time off for a vacation when there are so many holidays during the school year (your sarcasm is very clear--very witty). I am entitled to my opinion just as everyone else! :)

So glad my sarcasm was clear enough for you.

And presenting to Tink05....THE TEACHER OF THE CENTURY AWARD :worship: !!! You can put it right on the mantle next to the MY KIDS WILL BE BETTER THAN YOUR KIDS BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T TAKE VACATIONS DURING SCHOOL award. I myself have the MY STUDENTS ARE EDUCATIONALLY SCARRED FOR LIFE BECAUSE I TOOK A VACATION AND LEFT THEM WITH A SUB FOR A WEEK award.

Oh and it isn't any better going during value season? Keep kidding yourself, especially if it makes you feel better that you insist on going to WDW when you have to walk shoulder to shoulder in immense crowds :crowded: and wait forever in lines for rides and food, while spending far more money than you had to.

Ok, now, I NEVER once stated that I have a problem with my students taking vacations during the school year. As a matter of fact, if you would take the time to read my other posts, I indeed think it is great if a family can take their children on family vacations and I have absolutely no problem working with them to make up work missed. I have also posted (in this very thread) that I have always secured a discount for my WDW resorts during my vacations with the exception of spring break--which will be different this year thanks to the BRP-- :) . You are really fixated on that crowd issue, though. What's with that? I am super-proud for you that you take your vacations during the school year. yayyyy for Livie's mommy! As far as I am concerned, I am perfectly happy with my family vacations. :goodvibes

I do think it is "weird" for teachers to take vacation during the school year. I only know of one who did and it was for her wedding and honeymoon. That I thought a very good reason. No need for your profession to dictate a special day such as that.

However--I think it odd that two teachers are the only ones arguing that point.

Ok, I am here to offer my most sincere apologies to everyone! I really don't know what got into me! I am not a belligerent person at all!!! I honestly do respect that everyone has an opinion, be it different than mine. I really don't know what got into me. My apologies to all who were subjected to my smart@$$ remarks!!!!

I specifically apologize to LoveTink05. I re-read my posts and realize how harsh I was. I was shameful :guilty: . I have no problem with your point of view. When you started insulting some of the posters, I just got so fired up! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday with your family at WDW. I really hope you will accept my apology. And yes, I do have an issue with crowds...I hate 'em!!! I am very glad you don't!! Have a magical time!!

This thread is truly about beating a dead horse, no one is right and no one is wrong. We obviously just cannot agree to disagree. No one's kids are any better off for being taken out of school or not being taken out of school for vacation. It is all about the love we give them EVERY day!!!

Anyways, everybody, please accept my apologies!!!

WOW! OP here...Aren't ya'll taking this a little far??

What I didn't understand was why the SCHOOLS were allowed to tell parents when and for how long they could take their own children out for. Now...after 13 pages..I have learned that teachers are people too..and need vacations during off season, and that people who are supposed to be planning wonderful Disney Vacations for their children are spending time bickering with people to whom they don't even know on Message boards over how long they have to wait in line..or if they did, and weather or not they are bad parents for taking their kids out of school during NON school vacation times. Well I just wanted to say WHO CARES! We all do what we do..And I believe that for the most part everyone is doing what they feel is best for their family at that particular time. Everyone's life calls for different measures. I really hope that out in the "real world" some of these "posters" aren't as cold as they sound.

Take care everyone and Happy Halloween. :maleficen

I vote for the thread to be closed.
Thanks Mod!

Oh no. We are allowed to use our leave just like any other profession. I'll be gone for a week in January & another week in May. Our music teacher is going to DW in November. Our school's reading specialist just returned from a seven day stay in Disney. She had a magical trip. My class will be fine with my substitute. Hey, I get the best there is. My sub for my annual Disney trips is our school's former, now retired, Reading specialist. She's even the one who inserviced our entire staff on our present Reading program. :)

Hi again, I swear this is the last time I will post on this thread. I have already wasted to much time on it. Those of you who have been following this thread know that I "came out fighting" last night. After being unkind to a poster who was insulting others on this thread (LoveTink05), I felt bad and decided to apologize to her and others. I want to share the kind and caring sentiments she PM'ed me with last night.

QUOTE FROM LOVETINK05:

[Oh, I really do think you are as belligerent as your posts! I think you knew exactly what you were doing. Just for the record, I never said that the parks weren't crowded when we go. I simply stated that we never wait in long lines! Work on those reading skills, hon. Apology not accepted!]

Nice, huh? She is concerned about the example we are all setting for our children and that is her attitude? I have also received a plethora of PM's from others who asked me "Why the heck did you apologize to her? She is always jumping down people's throats." Well, I was trying to be the bigger person, and you know what? I was!!! Don't feed into her anymore, people!!! She cannot be reasoned with!!

LoveTink05 has issues. I wouldn't let her bother me if I were you. Good job doing what was right. Luckily all teachers don't have her attitude! I've been teaching for 20 years, and there have been a few years that warranted a mid-year vacation for various reasons. Believe it or not, all involved survived. Nothing wrong with some fresh blood in the classroom on occasion!

Didn't say wrong--just "weird", so no need to defend yourself (again--goes back to what the schools permitted students to do and yadda yadda yadda.).

I only know of the one who did b/c she actually shared about it and it was an important event. Others may have and I fared out okay with a very good SAT score, college scholarship, and a weighted 4.0 average after going to 10 schools. I'm sure somewhere along the line another teacher must have been on vacation at some point. They just didn't share it with the class. :teeth:

Ok, my turn to apologize to the OP and anyone else I may have argued with! I wanted to comment on the "that is her attitude?" comment. Re-read your posts to me! Last night, after sending the PM, I asked myself why in the heck I let this get to me? Must have just been a weak moment and being sick and tired of other's smart a$$ comments! So, there you have it! Off to plan my vacation that is in only 18 DAYS!!!!!!!! :Pinkbounc

Ok, so I now have "issues" because I have a disagreement with someone? Well, I guess I am not alone here then!

Have a lovely day!

Two teachers not only pulling their children out of school, but THEMSELVES. That's priceless. You have 4 months off, and you can't find a reasonable time to go? That's real professional. Taking time off during the school year to go on vacation. But it's nice to have a teacher's union protecting teachers from all their bad decisions.

So really what was the point of your original post? After all you started the whole discussion. :confused3

Most of the teachers I know are working those four months to make up for crappy salaries. But maybe that is just locally. I assume you never fudge a sick day, etc. Or are you the epitomy of a perfect employee? Exactly where do you find data that says a child's education suffers because a teacher is absent? Does this include sick days? Or, God forbid, even taking time off to give birth? NO one is so important that taking a few days off within the limits of their contracts is going to cause a crisis.

Cry me a river. Did those same teachers not understand the pay scale when they acepted those positions? Are you including the pension plan and 100% taxpayer funded health ins coverage in that "crappy" salary? Finally, if they don't like the salary, quit. There are many well qualified people who would love full time positions, but can't find one.

No, I don't. Almost all employers have moved away from offering "sick" days. I get vacation days and personal days. So I take off when I want AND make it at a convenient time for my employer. For example, I make sure I'm not taking time off at the same time as certain other employees, certain times of the year are more critical than others, etc. I wouldn't HAVE to do those things, but I respect my employer, fellow employees, and customers.

Nobody has made that claim that I've seen. I do question the professionalism of placing priority on the timing of a vacation over your professional responsibility. It's another example of why teachers complain about not being treated like professionals. Act like a professional, and you'll be treated like one.

You poor thing!

What's your point here? I say the school district makes it impossible for my family to plan ahead, and your comment is, tough?

Wow, the others are right about you.

To each his own, I guess. I'd rather the teachers I know take care of themselves and avoid professional burnout. I guess it just depends on whether someone wants to be nasty and judgemental, or assume the best of people.

And, yes, the starting salary is $28,000 in our county for teachers. So, regardless of the "pension" the salary sucks.

The inability to breathe in hot, humid weather would definitely make off-season vacations a must.. Many adults and children alike suffer from severe asthma and other breathing problems that would eliminate the possibility of vacationing during what you consider the "correct" times..
