I don't know what else to do--high triglycerides

In the meantime, I am adding grapefruit, walnuts, and almonds. I drink a lot of black tea already and I rarely drink sodas, and certainly not sugared sodas. Not going to take the fish oil because it gives me terrible diarrhea. But I did start the new med tonight so I'll let you know how that goes.

Look up your drugs for interactions with grapefruit, which can interfere with them. Cardiac drugs are notorious for grapefruit interactions.

Sugar. If you have high triglycerides, sugar should definitely be avoided.

You are correct. Sugar should be avoided. I thought you meant some other ingredient that I wasn't aware of.:thumbsup2

diet is only one part as a previous poster pointed out....My family is one of those that passed it down to the children......we are all on meds for cholesterol...My sister who has hardly any carbs at all.....mostly veggies and fruits within reason had the worst ......I am on Zocor/ generic form now and it is lower then before......my sister is on another type.....my brother had to go to a specialist for high tri's and his went down within two months.....with the meds that were perscribed for him....
Diet alone is not always the answer.....WW's diet and Diabetic diet are good all around diets......they are healthy and keep your body balanced.....good luck with your problem

What kind of doctor did your brother go to? I'm racking my brain to figure this out.

I started my new med last night and did okay. I have to take 1 pill at bedtime for a few days, then go up to 2 pills. Hopefully, things will go well. I'm really watching what I eat. When my foot heals up more I'll start doing some recumbent bike at the YMCA.

Exactly! My cardiologist also recommended avoiding carbs. Breads, sugary veggies, anything with wheat, and all cereals including oatmeal are off the list. Exercise is also important.

I just finished reading two life changing books that anyone dealing with cholesterol/triglyceride issues (and other health problems) may want to consider.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure by Dr. Esselstyn

The China Study by T. Colin Campbell

Both are fascinating reads with tons of scientific proof to back up the information.

This has been interesting reading. Especially since I go in next week for my yearly exam. I've been trying to control my cholesterol through my diet for the last year. We shall see if I have succeeded. It was borderline a year ago.

Okay, when I got a blood test in March, they asked have you eaten and I said "yes in fact since I had time to kill I actually went through the drive in and got a fast food sandwich and a coke, which I hardly ever do." The results came back and my tri was 428 and my good chol was too low and my blood sugar was high and my overall chol was over 200. Got the results in mail with a whole list of warnings.

I went back last week for a migrane and they wanted to redo the test, I knew that they would because it was on my results to retest fasting. The PA was absolutly freaking out and talking about meds and diet plans and what not. I said it wasn't a fasting one and I had been buying more natural products with no sat fat and additives, and she said no with that high of a test it wouldn't havent mattered. Got my new test results. Blood suger perfect, good chol perfect, total cholesteral 188 not average but still under the number that is considered high. The only thing still high was my triglycerides. They were 182. Only over the target by 32 points.

I will not be going on meds for that little of a difference no matter what they say (my results did say just D&E and retest in 6 months). I DID join a gym right next to my work so I've been going there after work, and I"ll continue to watch my food products. I had already cut down on real sodas to just one or two a week, and diet only one or two a week, only drink water at work. I also try to always buy the smallest soda.

So hopefully they tested you fasting and you can continue with the diet and exercise.

I have been on Vytorin for several years and my cholesterol is extremely good although I have weight and diabetes problems.
