The bedbug thing has been around for awhile now. I think there is a thread going on somewhere in the Orlando Hotels section of the DIS.
I see it as the "flavor" of the week for the news right now. They say things like, "local exterminators have seen a 100% increase in calls about bedbugs," and it only stresses people out. Well, for my local exterminator, a 100% increase from last year would mean 4 cases, instead of 2, hardly an epidemic in my town.
There have been reports here and there of people finding them at WDW and other Orlando hotels, but the truth is that
every hotel is vulnerable to them. The bigger truth? Someone sitting in your office could have one hitchhike in their purse and they end up going home with you.
Look around on the internet as there is plenty of information out there on how to do a simple 5-10 minute check of your room before you move in for your trip. Also there are tips on what to do if you think you've brought them home.
Also, you will read a lot of stories about people who have battled them for months, or even years. Take note that a lot of those people, from NYC, live in apartment buildings where they may have a neighbor who couldn't care less about living with bedbugs, and doesn't do their part to help with the treatments. With proper treatment (from a licensed exterminator), and a little extra work by the homeowner, you can be rid of them within 1-2 months, and not have to throw a single piece of furniture out.
I've done a lot of research into this, and the more you learn, the less dire the situation seems. It's one of those,"an ounce of prevention" situations.
Plan your trip and enjoy it!
