I just called my best friend and told her we are going to disney this summer and she was all excited. Then she asked if we are staying in the cheap hotel (the movies one that I like or the big one she seems to hate) and I told her that my husband gave us the grand floridian as a gift.

Now she's really excited. She said somethink like ' you'll like that better because they always argue that pop is like staying at wal-mart.'
Well, I like wal-mart. Now I am hoping I won't feel out of place at the expensive hotel.
Is that what she meant by pop is wal-mart?

I am so damn confused it's not funny.
(note to my husband- surprising me with a trip is a bad idea, it stresses me out!)

I think you'll be fine. Don't allow yourself for one minute to feel out of place at the GF. Yeah its lovely and expensive but for all you know that nicely dressed person you see in the elevator is up to their eyeballs in debt. Just like the guy in the cheap sunglasses at the Pop pool might be the millionaire next door. I'd just go, enjoy the nice accomodations and be happy.

And I have a friend who says the values are full of trashy people. Of course she's never stayed in one but I just ignore her. I think people like her and your friend get hung up on what they think they know about socio economics. I like Wal Mart too. I also like Neiman Marcus. I just know when to shop at each one, and when not to.

I love all the different levels of WDW resorts. To me its always a shame to lock yourself into any level and say I'd never stay someplace else. They all have something to offer.

You have a nice husband!

IMO- most people that can afford a DW vacation at POP, walmart or GF are ALL well off...

I'm not saying that we are millionaires, but think about it...how many people working minimum wage jobs can afford 2K or 4K or more for a DW vacation? It's not six flags where it's a days drive and 30 bucks to get in. Most people in attendance at MK are middle class people simply due to the cost involved.

My sister even made a snide comment about how she LOVES DW b/c all the 'undesireables' don't go to DW. :confused3 I didn't even bother to ask her what she meant by that. ugh. :headache:

We stayed at AKL and ASMU all in 1 trip, and we spent a night at GF (for dinner/drinks). We didn't notice much of a difference at all between the clientele. They all looked the same to me.

The atmosphere at the GF is not OUR favorite, because it seems a little too pristine and suit and tie. No person or any requirements have stated that this is mandatory, but it is the general atmosphere of the resort. So only you can determine if you feel out of place. Certainly noone there is going to say anything. It boils down to your comfort level. You should not feel out of place at ANY resort as long as YOU are comfortable there.:thumbsup2 Go and have a GREAT trip:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Well, I hope they all get over themselves before I get there in December. :lmao:

I like Wal-Mart, too, but if I could I would stay at GF in a flash! I wouldn't worry about feeling out of place. I mean, everyone is not going to be all dressed up to go to the parks and the pool. You'll be fine!

Okay, when I travel I usually stay deluxe. Not because I can't stay in a motel 6, but because there are amenities at a deluxe that I like having available to me (work out room, indoor corridors, someone to deal with my luggage, etc).

That being said, at WDW I have only so far stayed value, ASMu and Pop. I stayed at ASMu because my DBF at the time would not pay more than 100 per night for a hotel room. So I stayed there. And let me tell you I had a blast. It was clean and beautiful. Loved the icons and never had an issue with the bus service. This past May I stayed at Pop because the bulk of the people I was going with stayed there. I liked that as well. I preferred ASMu, but that is just me. Anyway, I am staying at the Boardwalk this summer because I just want the convenience of the Epcot location and got a great bounceback rate when I was there in May. I never let what other people say sway me one way or the other about my vacation, I stay where I want because I can. Its all good.

That is crazy!!! Anything on Disney is AWESOME!!! We stayed at GF once (only because we got a great deal) but our budget is more like Mod or value and I DID NOT feel out of place!!! GF is Supper nice but so is POP!!!

Hopefully your friend didn't mean anything by that comment - besides there is nothing wrong with Wallmart!!

Enjoy GF - I found everybody there very laid back!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!....You're going on a suprise vacation!!! If you had won a sweepstakes you wouldn't ask the supplier to change the prize, you would simply feel lucky!!

Life is short!...Who deserves a beautiful hotel to stay in more than you?!

You husband apparently wants you to know how much HE treasures you, so don't worry your pretty little head about what anyone else thinks! :bride:

Have a blast!...The best revenge is enjoying yourself!!...EVERYONE envies those who know how to laugh, love, and enjoy!!!!.....And it doesn't matter what kind of bag they carry, or shoes they wear!

Accept the loving gift as it is given!:lovestruc

You know what?:confused3 Even people who stay at GF wear mouse ears!::yes::

Live life to the fullest! You only get one time around! Enjoy it! You'll be glad you did!

I'll stay at the GF for you if you're too stressed out. :goodvibes

I will second that! :cool1:

I wish my hubby would surprise me like that. I would LOVE to stay the GF. I would jump at the chance. To me the GF just screams LUXURY and I am a dlx kind of girl

My parents work for Walmart. And my mother is quick to remind me that their job enabled them to buy my first new car, pay for most of my education until I got marrried, pay for my wedding, and pay for all the expensive designer clothes I had to have when I was younger. :) Of course, she says it with love.:lovestruc

I say go and have a great time. Enjoy your stay. And who cares what others think.

Enjoy your vacation and thank your kind hubby for planning such a nice surprise for you. :cloud9: Ignore the elitist talk from the peanut gallery. I find that when people feel the need to say that they can "only" stay here or there its not about Disney, it's about something else. Most people who can stay anywhere they want stay anywhere they want and don't bother talking about it. Don't explain, enjoy :yay: :thumbsup2

Enjoy your stay at GF. You have just as much right to be there as anyone else. Rich or poor. Hey, if you're paying the cash, then who's to say otherwise! Don't feel out of place. Have a great time, I'm so jealous. :goodvibes

Very well said! We love all different levels also! Relax and have a wonderful time!:goodvibes

I would sleep on a park bench at Disney if I had to :lmao: :rotfl:

We have stayed values, mods and deluxes and they all were awesome and a different experience. I say go and have a great time and enjoy every minute of it.:thumbsup2

I have never stayed at GF, but I have eaten there many times. I have never noticed any difference in the dress code, never eaten in one of their expensive restaurants. When I go to Disney, I don't take dress clothes, but that's me. We eat at 1900 Park Fare.
When you go to the parks, can you tell where people are staying? If your answer was NO, then you go and have a wonderful time. Sometimes I look around at people and just wonder what they all paid to be there. I always search the lowest price for everything, is that nuts? We come to Disney a lot. I want the best deal I can get!:goodvibes

We just stayed Concierge at AKV's...guess what? They were all dressed just like us. We are DVC owners or we would have never paid to stay there.

Thank your husband, have a wonderful trip. I love Walmart too.

I always find it amusing when people think they are going to be "out of place" in a fancy hotel.

Here's the story of my in-laws. They are retired and well off enough to travel extensively. Once a year, they go to a medical convention (father-in-law a retired physician) and the host hotel is always a big fancy one (this year is the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville). For all their other travels, they stay in Elderhostels or in Days Inns or use free nights that they have accumulated. Nothing fancy.

They act the same in the fancy ones as they do at Days Inn. Why should they, or anyone else, act differently? I'll take our same old cat hair infused suitcase to the Opryland that we took to Pop Century two months ago.

Go and have fun. It's just a hotel.

To all of the PP's - "Yep!" ::yes:: Hey, Disney is Disney! :smickey: So go, have a great time, and enjoy the beautiful lobby and the great people watching and have a fabulous WDW vacation because everyone else is there for the same reason. The GF is the "flagship" for the WDW resorts, and its atmosphere can't be beat. pixiedust:

P.S. I love Meijer and Target! :goodvibes
