I didn't give out candy..I gave out ROCKS!

I like to think I have a prety good sense of Humor infact. I have a pretty dark sense of humor, However I wouldn't have found this funny.
I never made the connection to The Charlie Brown story until some of you mentioned it I didn't recall that. I can tell you my kids would never watch this special so They wouldn't get it at all.

Now if if you made little placards as some suggested and and TAPED the rock to the card and said Charlie Brown and the Great pumpkin wanted to give you this trick. I would be right on board with that. I would have thought it was great. But just a rock? I would have been very perturbed to open my 4 year olds bags
and find rocks.

I certainly dson't think this is psycho and demented ( as in razors in apples) But I don't think you thought it through clearly.

If no kids came by after your DH brought home the candy, it's probably because by then the neighborhood kids got the word you were giving out rocks.

Kids tell each other where the "good" and "bad" houses are.

For example, 'round here, if someone gives out something especially good like full-sized candy bars or candy cigarettes, kids tell other kids. Then those are the houses that get the most trick-or-treaters.

It's the same way here!

Strangely enough, while we were out trick or treating yesterday, one of the boys peeked into his bag and started yelling...."I got a rock....I got a rock!!!" I have no idea if he really did get a rock in his candy....but the little boys (from ages 7 - 11 ) were all laughing so hard that I couldn't help but join in. They all searched their bags...no more rocks.

I think, we, as adults, see things so differently than children do. They saw it as a mere silly prank...and loved it. As an adult, I was at first upset, horrified and concerned. But truthfully.....did they see it that way? Not at all. They enjoyed it.

And no one ate the rock.

I don't think that giving out rocks is particularly funny either but I agree that there's a lot of overreacting going on here. I can't see a kid eating a rock by mistake. Even if they did snitch something, kids want to know what they're eating just in case it's something "gross." At least that's been my experience.

If you're referring to my post, I was equating the person who's neighbor filled junior mint boxes with little rocks as the same as putting a razor blade in an apple. If you open food, remove food, and replace food with a nonedible substance, that is illegal and tampering with a food substance. Putting a rock in someone's bag instead of candy isn't equal to razor blades in apples, it's just plain weird and stupid.

the only parellel I see is the people that think it is funny giving the rock should prob think it is funny getting the rock back in their window lol.

No hubby would just go give it back and donate some candy lol

I didn't get the Charlie Brown connection - I still don't remember it, but I guess it was there if you all do. It just sounds mean to me. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why people were acting like it was clever!

As for the person that put the tampon in - that's the whole point -you did it to be mean!

If my kid empty his bag and a rock rolled out..PERFECT opportunity to explain WHY The bags need to be checked.

Well now that I have to agree with. Nothing like a good example to teach kids that there might be something dangerous in their bags.

Unfortunately, I don't think it's a good thing.

Am I the only one old enough to remember when parents didn't HAVE to check their kids candy bags? I remember my mother looking at the stuff with me to see what I got, but I don't remember her checking the items over for hazardous materials... until one particular year when they was some psycho putting razor blades in apples and it was on TV as a news alert for parents to check their kid's bags.

Oh no don't get me wrong. If someone hgave my child a box of candy that had been refilled with rocks. I would have called the police in 2 seconds.

My point was that Although.... I didn't think it was funny, I didn't think it was equated as harmful as razor blades in apples. Yours however that was potentially harmful and more than a foolish choice.

I also moved the placement of my smiley to show perhaps where I intended my opinion to be.;)

And do you really believe that a child who is old enough to trick or treat is going to try and eat a rock.

Did you not see any toddlers out T/T last night?? I have a toddler and we have several that came to the door. I can assure you that a 18 month old, 2 yr old, 3 yr old are not going to be able to tell the difference between the candy that looks like and rocks and a real rock. Yes we check our kids candy but you dont really want to take a chance they may get something out of the bag before you have a had a chance to go through it.

And it's stupid things like this that make it necessary to check the bags.

ITA. While I dont think the OP meant to harm any kids things like this should have more thought put into it. Especially being a new parent herself. Toddlers and small kids dont have the know how to pick out the Tricks from the Treats--again we do check our kids candy but I still shouldnt have to worry about my 2 yr old eating or choking a rock.

My DH says they didn't check his candy when he was a kid (born in '71). We had an instance with pins in snicker bars when i was little (born in 74) and also some freak passing out lsd one year.
I'll be 30 in 7 weeks and my father still tries to inspect my candy at holidays. Funny how the suspicions ones were always rolos, snickers, and peanut butter cups

When I was a teenager........Insert tampon story here.

The MAIN difference is you were a kid not an adult with a kid. While I wouldn't have called the police I do think it was in poor taste. I LOVED the Peanuts while I was a kid and didn't remember the story until after it was posted. I would have just thought she was a nut and thrown out the rock. Yes we check all our kids candy but believe me kid's fingers are quicker than lightening and while trick or treating we saw parents telling their kids to take that candy out of their mouths, that they didn't check it yet and they were walking right next to them. It happened to my own neighbor and we were both walking with the kids.

This would have been a very funny story if TOV/her husband went to an adult Halloween party dressed as Lucy and Charlie Brown and instead of bringing a dessert/treat to the party they brought a plate full of rocks. She just used poor judgment and hopefully no one did harm themselves from this. I have seen candy in the shape of rocks so you just never know. Turn off your lights next year or plan ahead to shop early. Rocks would probably be a hit with 10 year old boys but little kids may be disappointed and I'm sure you wouldn't want your own son disappointed. ;)

NOT candy cigarettes!!!!

You wouldn't believe what a big whoop candy cigarettes are to the kids around here!

Because they're difficult to find? Or because cigarettes are so forbidden? I don't know, but when I was out walking the dog yesterday, a bunch of kids were yelling to other kids, "Go to Gary's house! They're giving out candy cigarettes!"

You'd have thought Gary's house was giving out dollar bills, the way these kids were acting.

Just curious... When I was a kid, we used to frequently get small toys instead of candy in our bags. Do you all worry that your kids may mistake those for candy too? Or that they might eat the candy wrappers?

I'm not trying to be a PITB , I just don't understand resorting to calling the cops over a silly pun on the Charlie Brown Halloween special. I would think any toddler out ToTing that is young enough to mistake a good sized rock for food would have an adult with them while they were out who is certainly going to notice a rock right away.

I'd probably have just turned the lights out and not given anything if I had no candy, but then, we love Halloween and prep for it at least a week in advance. I'd also never give out unwrapped candy or apples. That is just kind of creepy.

I don't know. I don't think it was a particularly good idea to give rocks, but I don't really get calling the cops over it either citing a choking hazard.

um, given the rather dramatic and entertaining posting history of the OP, I think everybody here is really getting worked up over a whole lot of nothing.

I DON'T get the original Target thing. Is she trying to say Target wouldn't sell her candy because she pre-wrote a check? Is there a particular reason she couldn't go somewhere else to get candy? I mean, it must have taken a fair amount of time to go to a park and get rocks.....no ATM's nearby?????

So she is getting out of her car with a handful of rocks, and a neighbor comes over to ask what they are for? uh huh

And then her husband comes home and goes to the neighbor to ask why he didn't stop her? again uh, huh

As my 11yo says "Dude, whatever!"

It is USUALLY obvious that it is a ring spider, etc. Rocks are denser and a child may be inclined to bite into them. It was just poor judgement that wasn't thought through.

If she was intent on giving away the rocks, maybe she should have had all the rocks in a big bowl with a label on it "rocks", take one if you want, the candy will be here in an hour. That way no one would be the least bit confused on what they were getting. Really rocks for a little boy would probably be a hit if they had searched for and found it themselves. Or if they were on vacation and it was an "Arizona" rock for example. But regular old rocks are nothing special and I'm sure the parent didn't think so either.

I personally would have broken into the jarred $, went to the store and bought some candy. Just my opinion.

Thanks. That makes sense.

I guess I was just weird because when I was a little kid I was always taught it was a huge no-no to even accept anything that was not wrapped up unless it was a toy.

Personally I'd be more worried about angry kids tossing the rocks at your windows.

ya got me thinking....

Is someone trying to yank my chain? well it worked lol! I know it isn't hard to do but... lol

You're 35 correct? Then you were not old enough to have not had your candy checked. I am 37, and news about razors in apples and other candy horror stories were around when I was a kid, and my mom would not let us touch our candy until she went through every single piece. ( with 11 siblings, it was a looong time before we could eat our candy.)

Maybe your mom didn't know she should check the candy?
