I did a terrible thing last night

It's a terrible feeling, isn't it? I ran over a little dog once, his owner let both of them off the leash on the sidewalk of a major artery of traffic and there was no way I could swerve or brake to avoid hitting that little thing. I just cried and cried. I was so angry with that dog owner. If someone is going to have a pet they should keep them safe :(

It's not your fault. {{{HUGS}}} sweetie.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I once hit a cat (and I worship cats) during a rainstorm on some isolated street, at night, when I lived in California. I pulled over & looked around (but was afraid to get out of my car) & didn't see it anywhere. I knew it took off ~ obviously it was hurt, but I felt helpless. There was nothing I could do, unless I wanted to start knocking on doors in strange neighborhoods at night.....It's been years and I still think of that cat.

I hope you can forgive yourself for your accident, but it was just that....an accident. I'm sure you didn't hit the dog on purpose. If it helps ease your guilt, you could always go back (since you knew who the dog belonged too) & tell them of your accident & offer them your sincerest apology.

Good Luck!

Here is the clarafication:

First- Dopey Sharon your user name fits you perfectly!

Second- DW was not with me when I went to pick Seth up from my mom's house

Third- Miss Jasmine is right I did not get out of the car because I have Muscualr Dystrophy and I am not going to risk falling and laying in the snow in 16 degree weather for a dead dog. Sorry.

fourth- I don't think the owners of the dog were home. No lights, no cars in the drive. Once again if I could have gotten up the steps I would have knocked on the door and apologized.

fifth- I would have called the people but they have no phone.(I know it's hard to believe, but they dont)

sixth- The dog was dead. I know he was dead. I have a Ford Explorer and I know he was dead. Get the point!

seventh- Go ahead and flame me I don't care. I feel bad enough about killing the animal. It was not intentional, it wasn't pre-metated. And I wasn't aiming for him.

Flame away!!!!!

mhopset,

I'm sure if you would have been a little more informative in your original post there wouldn't have been the confusion.

Your post said that you hit a dog and didn't get out of your car because there was too much snow. Sounds pretty nasty to me.

Thanks for clearing it up. You were right not to get out and obviously you are feeling very badly.

Flame away!!!!!

No flames from me. Just hugs and understanding. I didn't even know that you have muscular dystrophy and were unable to get out of your vehicle. When you made the post, I saw it for what it was an accident and you felt sincerely horribly about it. Again you have my complete understanding and no judgement from me towards you on this matter.

A few years ago, my DW Sue nearly ran down a 3yo toddler who darted out into the street in front of her. She hit the brakes so hard that she actually shattered the disc brake pads on the front brakes. Thankfully she didn't hit the toddler. It turns out that the child's aunt who was supposed to be watching him left him unattended for a bit and he had wandered out of the back yard and onto the street.

I'm sure that you did your best to avoid hitting the dog. It was an accident. Apparently this lady cares about as much about the welfare of these dogs as the toddler's aunt. And having met you, I'm willing to bet that you are feeling a lot more remorse than the dog's owner.

Damo I maybe should have given a little more clarity. I am the kind of person where I don't make a big deal of my disability. I don't like to step up on a soapbox and announce to the world I have Muscualr Dystrophy.

To everyone else thanks for your concern and well wishes. I felt really bad when I hit that animal. I used to hunt when I was able to get out in the woods. It sure feels really bad when you kill someones pet.

Mhopset, what an awful thing to go through, I hit a squirrel once and that was upsetting enough.

I want to remind everyone of the PLAY NICE rule on these boards. Personal attacks are not tolerated.

Mhopset,

Yes, I can understand that. If you would have left off the last couple of sentences in your post about the not getting out part we all would have just felt sorry for you. You gave us too much information but not enough information:p

Wow, I never thought it would turn out this way. Sorry, I'm deleting all my posts. That should confuse everyone! LOL! :p :p I just really assumed there was something postive in a very sad situation. Well, hopefully I've learned never, never, never to assume anything ever again! I know the old saying, I just have to keep repeating it to myself in case I ever assume anything again. :)

Confusing, ain't I. Just skip this post folks! LOL! :p :o

Oh Gosh, this thread has made me cry (for more than one reason)......

I am so sorry this situation happened. I know the awful feeling you have and nothing is going to make it any better. It was an accident. With time, the terrible feelings will go away. But be prepared because, unfortunately, some thing years down the road will trigger the memory again and the awful feeling comes back....

((((Hugs to you, Mhopset))))

That is a sad accident. When I was teenager I hit a cat and I cried for a week. Having gone to school at OU I can understand that your neighbor doesn't have a phone. Sorry you had to deal with this today as well as some of the criticism.

Perhaps it might be a good idea if you stop and ask for more details before making derogatory comments and berating someone without knowing all the facts in the case. Or you could do as my Mom told me, if you can't say anything nice, then say nothing at all.

That being said, I am so sorry, Tony. I know you feel just awful about this. :( The real villain here are the owners that let their dogs run free. :(

Enough has been said here.
