First...It is my own fault  ...I didn't read the small print :magnify: re:PE uniform. 2 pair of Stride Rite Sneakes(no not cheap ;) )..cannot be worn to school anymore because they are velcro and not tie up...AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!(This is the 1st year for my boys with this rule...up until now they could wear velcro.

Anyone know of a good sneaker sale??? Thanks for listening :goodvibes

I would be mad too! Telling you what type of sneakers you can buy for gym??

quite frankly....unless they called you from school... i would send them in the sneakers you bought for them....

It's like the 16 vs 24 crayon debate....

School is not paying your bills...you are....

If they told me everyone had to have a blue folder and i had already bought 2 green ones ...I would tell them they had to deal with it.....

they're sneakers.... they're not backless.... they work the same as ones that tie...i would think they're safer than tie ones (since my dd's are always untied)

My kids' school doesn't have this rule, but I saw that on a couple other supply lists and I don't understand why, I would think that velcro would be safer. I understand why no zippers because my kids have had those and they come unzipped constantly, but no velcro or slip-ons? My kids' shoes are always coming untied, and I double-knot them, I would think it would be a pain for the teachers to have to stop the kids and remind them to tie their shoes all the time.

No velcro sneakers? That's weird. I wonder why. You'd think they'd rather have velcro sneakers than lace sneakers. I see a lot of kids with undone laces, tripping over their laces, etc.

Payless was having a BOGO 1/2 sale just before school started. Not sure it is still going on now though. You can also get coupong for Payles on their web site.

But, personally, I think I'd just send them in what you bought and see what happens!

Good luck!

I agree, how much you want to bet the gym teacher doesn't even notice? As long as your kid doesn't adjust the velcro right in front of the teacher (rrrriiiiiiiippppp!), they either won't notice or won't care.

Worst case, they do say something and you have to buy new sneakers.

I've heard that Stride Rite is very forgiving with returns. Maybe you could explain to them your situation and see what they say.

I never thought they were but I have read many good things about them on this board.

You could always take them to a consignment shop or ebay them, too. They should bring in a fair amount.

Is this a private or public school? I'd do like the other posters here said, just ignore it and see what happens. I prefer velcro shoes for my kids because the laces are always coming untied. I really can't imagine them expelling a kid for not having the "right" shoes, however, their PE grade could suffer. I wouldn't just jump to do their bidding, I'd wait and see how it goes.

Oh, also Payless gives a AAA discount--I believe its 10%. Don't know if you can combine that with a coupon, worth a try!

If the boys were already told they needed new shoes, wearing the velcro ones is like telling them it's okay to do what you want with no regard to authority. Although, I don't understand why they want tie shoes for PE rules are rules. DD's kindergarten teacher wanted all the kids to be able to tie their shoes by the third month of school or wear velcro. DD's preschool taught this, but it seems many did not know and as a parent helper I tied a lot of laces.

What! I agree that you pay your bills, etc. and the school needs to accept that. It is ridiculous for them to say anything. Last year for kindergarten I had my DD wear the slip on nike tennis shoes because I knew that as a fact the kindergarten teachers WOULD NOT retie the shoes. They said that then they would have to tie shoes constantly and each child needs to do their own. And I send my child to this place everyday??

Our school has the tie shoes rule also. We then received a page long note from the (middle school) PE teacher explaining that the shoes must be tied properly & tightly. It is the style now to wear your shoes loose, untied, etc. I think there is a safety issue of shoes flying off, which probably includes the velcro shoes.

Good point, but with the older crowd. I was speaking about the younger grade schoolers. I thought they probably were the "stride rite" size. I could be wrong though.

I second Payless. For my DD I can only find athletic shoes that fit in either Payless or NewBalance :faint: brands.

agnes!

I can't believe that. My school is very specific about what the child must bring. Ex: 40 Ziploc gallon size bags, only 24 crayola crayons. 4 expo medium pt markers. I spent around 60 per child to bring to school.

If you can't return them, can you maybe speak to the school? Even though there is the chance they will still say no.

I went through something like that. One year, Target had a great sale on polo type shirts. I bought several colors, guess what? Not the school colors. And they told my son that it was considered against school dress code....

I talked to the school, to see if they would allow them for a few months. I usually buy him new shirts every few months, because he grows so quickly. No go. Since he only wore one shirt once, I returned the other ones. Kept the wrong color shirt, that he wore once, for him to wear out. I think he only got to wear it one more time before he outgrew it.

It can be aggravating, but I think I would try to get permission or new shoes. I know my youngest can get flipped out, if he even thinks he's doing something wrong with the rules of school. And I don't like when they call him out on it either.

I hate when stuff like that happens. My kids are such strict rule-followers that they wouldn't even consider wearing the "forbidden" item any more. The schools, in my opinion, are getting a bit carried away with the rules, especially for elementary age kids.
Payless and Target have good prices for sneakers, I've also had good luck with Sears and try Kohl's clearance. Good luck!
