How I dealt with MRI's is to close my eyes and pretend I am lying on the beach ( which I love).

Sorry to hear and will pray all your tests are normal. I know it's easier said than done, but please try to think postive.

I have had several MRI's and other than the noise they make, they are honestly no biggie. It is more less - mind over matter and many take something to help relax. You can hear the tech speaking to you and also have call button if you feel the need to stop. You may also be given the choice of earplugs or listening to music. When I had MRI for my headaches (mirgraine), I did have to wear a wired contraption like a catcher's mask over my head during test - however, yours may be completely different. If you are nervous, I recommend just closing your eyes, positive thoughts and say a prayer. God sees us thru all our fears.

My 35yo SIL's seizures started like you described, with no rhyme or reason. Had all the testing, is completely normal, but still has to take anti-seizure meds. Difficult as it is, when you have a seizure, your dr. must report it to DMV and they usually take your license for 6 mos. Hang in there!!

I had to have a couple of MRI's last year. I didn't take anything to help me relax the first time and while it wasn't unbearable it was not very pleasant either. When my dr ordered a follow-up MRI 6 months later I asked about having an open MRI. She wouldn't okay it saying the images they produce are not as good as a closed MRI. She prescribed valium to help me relax for the second one and that made a world of difference for me!

I'm not familiar with the drug your dr prescribed for you but I'm sure it won't knock you out. You have to be somewhat alert to follow instructions from the tech (breathe, hold your breath, etc) during the procedure.

It's also a good idea to keep your eyes closed as others have suggested.

It's not that bad, really. Especially since you have something to help relax you. You can do it!

Brandie, sending prayers and pixie dust your way. I had a MRI done on Friday, they gave me Xanax to relax. It really helped as it was a closed MRI. I had headphones with music and they covered my eyes with a soft cloth. It was a pleasant experience. I hope yours is as well.

Brandie. Prayers and hugs for you at this difficult time. It sounds like your seizure was pretty mild, but the deja vu feeling that you described sounds like what my wife experiences from time to time. She had her first grand mal seizure several years ago. She was not allowed to drive for 6 months. One of our children was in preschool and the other was still at home. Somehow Sue managed with the help of friends from our church. They were able to take her wherever she needed to go. She actually was not allowed to drive for nearly a year due to a second seizure. Once on the proper meds, she has been seizure free for nearly a decade.

I hope that your MRI scan goes well. My advice to you is to close your eyes and try to fall asleep. I find all the noises inside an MRI to be soothing once I relax. I guess I'm a bit odd that way.

I hope and pray that your doctor will be able to find some definitive reason for your condition. Keep the faith. You'll be back behind the wheel in no time.

I've said a prayer for you. That happened to my Dad about in 2001 right before I left on my Thanksgiving trip to WDW. He called me that night on his way home from his job (he travels and is in sales), just calling to talk to me and tell me how his week went. My stepmom called me the next morning to tell me he had a seizure in the middle of the night and fell out of the bed and busted his head on the nightstand. They ran him through all the tests and everything and never found out why it happened. He didn't drive for 6 months which was bad since that's how he made his income. But that was almost 3 years ago and he's never had it happen again, thank God. I pray the best for you and that there will be many people to be able to help you through this.

my MRI is scheduled for apr 28 at 7:30 in the morning...yippee (dripping with sarcasm) i called the center and it's going to be a closed MRI...no way to get an open right now...eek...they did tell me to bring a cd to listen to during the procedure. i'll be sure to have clay aiken on stand by...

Just read your thread.... keep us posted on your results... My son (17)has just experienced a seziure..grand mal (in his classroom) ... for the first time in his life. His CAT scan, blood/urine work came back good...they are sending him for an EEG on the 29th. In the mean time...his school really got me upset... they claimed that since he has never had one in his life it MUST be drug related & they were about to expell him from school & he is an A student in all honors class's & graduating May 17th... I had to fight with them for 3 hours with proof from the ER that it wasn't drug related at all.... just because he is a teenager & never had one...school officals took the liberty to state that is why it happened...they even told the EMT's that took him out by ambulance that is what had happened... the nerve of them...it is all straigthend out now with the school...and listed on both his & his sister's emergency cards at school..."family history of seizures"... I was told I had Petit-Mal & migraines when I was younger but have outgrown the petit-mal... started on med's when I was 12 and off by 19-20. I now only suffer from the migraines and vertigo....

I'm sorry to hear you are going through this. As for the MRI, I've had both open and closed ones. The open machine has a space on either side that is open but the area in front of your face is still there. What I understand is that any open MRI takes longer and may not have results as good as you would get in the closed MRI.

My last MRI was in a closed machine. Even though I'm not claustrophobic, I have to admit I was a bit nervous because of all the reports I'd read of people freaking out. For me it was no different than the open machine. When they first put me in I just kept my eyes closed. Finally after about 10 minutes or so, I took a peak to see how it looked. I could still see out the end of the machine and with the tech talking to me off and on during the procedure, I didn't have any problems. Someone here said it was boring and I'd have to agree with that 100%. I spent time thinking about WDW while I was in there and at one point I almost fell asleep!

Take something to calm you if you need to but when it's over you'll probably be saying is that all there is? Hope they can find what caused your seizure.

Had missed this thread, Brandie, but glad we had talked a bit in PM's when Marie was going through this. As I said, the meds should do the trick, regardless how you are about the MRI. Marie recalls virtually nothing of the MRI itself. Even some of the discuassions after the MRI. You'll do great. And again, my very best wishes and prayers are with you for an easy test, and good results. Looking for an update when you are up to it.
