Last month I made a big purchase for a 14 year old. I bought her a Macbook from Apple. It was $999 plus tax.

We're an Apple family, I was tired of DD taking mine. I also wanted her to have a good computer for homework as our only non Apple computer is our desk top which is a piece of crap.

So, anyhoo. Yesterday my ex husband came into town and picked up DD. He's staying for a few days and booked a room at the Comfort Suites. He drove DD by last night, I saw her come downstairs with a change of clothes and her laptop. She had homework to do on it.

This morning, my ex put the laptop in the bottom of his suitcase and covered it with clothes. ( I know, how stupid ) He then drove DD to school and he went and walked on the beach. He came back at 12:30 in the afternoon and went to change clothes. The MacBook was gone.

STUPID ex then goes downstairs and reports it to the manager. The manager says, "Sorry, there's nothing we can do about it and we're not responsible for loses." Ex leaves it at that. 3 hours LATER, my oldest DD calls to tell me the news. Ex called her and asked her to call me.

I called DH ( who's in law enforcement ) and called the police. We all showed up at Comfort Suites. Filed a police report, DH and the other cop watched the video surveillance tape. Which of course didn't show the door to the room. Per the manager, the only person who should have had access to the room was the maid. And she "had her bag searched before she left". Of course I have no idea if this really happened as the manager never bothered to check the tapes until the police came.

Tomorrow, DH and the cop will be meeting the maintenance man ( who had already gone home for the day ) to "pull the record" on the room lock. I guess they can check who opened the door for the day. Maybe.

I've called my CC company ( haven't even gotten the bill for the computer yet ) and have no insurance coverage.

I called my homeowners. It is covered. But, here in coastal SC, hurricane alley, my deductible is $3500. So I get nothing. Except to pay a bill next week on a computer that's already gone.

Ex is now saying he's going to call his insurance company. He lives in Upstate NY and his deductible is far less.

If he calls and says he was traveling with his child and her computer was stolen, will his insurance cover the laptop?

I've got receipts ( in my name ) and will have a full police report.

Is there anything else you would do.

I'm just sick over this.

That really stinks. I am so sorry. I don't have any advice, just a .

I don't know, but I'm really sorry. Let us know how you make out!

sounds like your ex just got himself a really nice mac. :rolleyes1

Good luck, I hope you can recover it. (or at least get the insurance to cover it!) I would be just sick over the situation.

No, I'd hate to think he'd steal from his own kid. :sad2:

I knew it might sound like that but my ex is very wealthy- ( like single guy with a Lexus, a Cadillac and an Infinity ) he's probably got more money than he'll ever spend.

As big of a turd as he is, he wouldn't steal his child's laptop. Though we're still waiting to see if he'll offer to replace it.

He should. There shouldn't even be a question of that. It certainly isn't your DD's fault it was stolen. I am surprised though, we leave our laptops out all the time when we travel and have never had a problem anywhere. That's a big risk for a hotel employee to take. His homeowners might cover it, but that really isn't the point. If he's so "wealthy" (sorry those 3 cars don't indicate wealth) he won't miss the money replacing it.

I'm sorry to hear about the theft. Honestly it is his or miss if his insurance will cover the loss. Your homeowners insurance will cover the family's property anywhere in the world.

Your daughter is his family, however, she doesn't live in his household. It can be argured that he was responsible for her and her things at the time they were stolen.

He can skirt the issue by playing dumb and saying he bought the computer and lost the receipt. Then he can provide a proof of purchase or owners manual to prove existence of the computer. Though that is "technically" insurance fraud.

Insurance actually does have wiggle room. You don't have to take the first no for an answer. He can file a claim under his policy telling the truth. Then if they deny the claim he can ask for a manager to plead his case since this is a grey area.

Offer?? Ummm...he was the adult with them, so he is the responsible party. I would tell him he is replacing it if his insurance doesn't cover it!

I'm glad to hear that - not everyone is as trustworthy. I would hope that he would replace it - it's a shame that he didn't put it in the safe - but I really do hope the situation gets resolved for you. I would be 100% sick over it. (as I know you are)

(ps, wealth doesn't stop theft, didn't you see the thread about the rich neighbor stealing the newspaper??!! :rotfl2:)

Yes he need to replace it. He was the responsible adult. Though when it is replaced it would not be going with DD again.

My homeowners specifically states that it does not cover my laptop. I could have paid extra for coverage for it, but the coverage was more than the cost of my laptop...so that was kind of silly.

We have USAA and it does cover ours. My oldest DS dropped his while he was in college and we got enough to replace it with a new one.

He's wealthy. He's in the process of selling his business and retiring. He'll sell for almost a million dollars. Then he's moving to Florida.

However, he's never been a big spender on the kids. I've always been the one to do that stuff.

He wouldn't miss the money. He just likes his money too much to part with any of it without some angst.

I'd flat out ask him to replace it. He shouldn't have left it. :-(

OP, I know you said your CC wouldn't cover it. Just for future reference, if you have an AMEX, use that for all major electronic purchases. It would have been covered, and they give you and extra years warranty after the manuf runs out! It is the best card to have and to use. Just and FYI.

What is it exactly that your ex did wrong? The laptop was stolen, sadly this kind of stuff happens but in all reality what exactly should he have done differently?

I agree he should (since it seems he can) offer to replace it but in no way IMO does he have an obligation to replace it.

I'm sorry that happened, it really does suck to be violated that way but perhaps it never should have left the house without knowing what the insurance coverage was and what the real risks were.

That is the pits.
I'm assuming the only reason the police came was because your EX is a cop?
They sure wouldn't even dispatch them here for something so small. Around here that would be a phone in report. I'd be out of luck too, I have $1,000 deductable.

I'm inclined to agree with this.

I think he should replace it, if he is financially able. However, I do agree with you in one sense-- he hid it in a suitcase. I've left laptops out on desks in hotels. I've only put one in a safe once. I do think he thought he was doing the smart, careful thing by hiding it in a suitcase.
The part I do disagree with, though, is your last line-- laptops are meant to be taken out. That's their main selling point-- they're portable! I think a 14 year old girl is expected to take a laptop out of the house.
