As some of you know, I had a falling out with our new choir director Alice last year. Choir was just not fun anymore, so I quit. I was relieved but also sad that I would not be singing with all my friends. I miss the Thursday night practices, but the choir director's choice of music especially for the men was horrible. Last Sunday, my neighbor (and fellow men's chorale tenor) Barry asked if I could help with a computer problem on his daughter's PC. I worked late every night last week, but managed to get home at a decent hour on Thursday. I went over to his house about 10PM and reloaded Microsoft Word on his daugther's computer. I asked him how choir was going. He told me that the men were singing "The Lord Is My Light" on Sunday morning. This is one of my favorite men's pieces that we had done several times in the past and I know it by heart. I asked Barry how they sounded. Recently the choir and the chorales have had a really good blend. I think that Alice is finally pulling the groups together. He told me that he could always use some assistance and that he wished I would come back.
Anyway, it turns out that I am the lay reader for the early service for the month of January. And the chorales sing at the early service. So I was faced with sitting in the chancel of our sanctuary and watching while the chorale sang the anthem. I thought about it from Thursday evening until last night. I was tempted to call Alice and see if she would let me sing even though I had not attended practice on Thursday. I didn't call. So this morning we all got up a little earlier than usual just so we could be at church early enough to catch Alice before she headed down to the choir room. I saw her in the hallway and asked if she could use my voice for the anthem. She thought about it and decided that it would be OK. I warmed up with the chorale and, to make a long story short, once again sang with the men's chorale at church. DW Sue was overjoyed to once again hear me singing. She has supported my decision to leave the choir even though she didn't agree with it. She kept reminding me over the past several months that she misses hearing me sing. I must admit that it felt "right" to be in the choir.
So I will have to rearrange my schedule to free up Thursday evenings again. The thought of singing in the choir again has made me happy in a way that I haven't felt since last June. I just wanted to share my joy with you all.
