On behalf of mothers-in-law everywhere, I have to say, some of you guys seem a little..um..harsh.Kind of hurt my grandma feelings.
Some people are hard to get along with at any age - that isn't a function of mother-in-lawness, just bad personalities. But this mother-in-law sounds like a pretty nice introvert to me. She seems like someone who was doing her best to tag along, and she was probably tired at the end of the day from the effort. A fifty-five year old isn't an old lady, but she doesn't have as much energy as younger women do anymore - and she probably needed some alone-time at night, to rest up for the next day of being with her different-from-her-family-and-natural-to-her-ways daughter-in-law, and 2 energetic young children.
Guess what, ladies!! Your sons and daughters are going to get married one day. That's going to instantly turn you into themother-in-law. Wait for it - it's coming, faster than you can imagine. Those who think they will never be the butt of mother-in-law jokes are probably the very ones most in danger. If it can happen to someone as seemingly reasonably nice as the mother-in-law in this trip report, it can happen to you!
