This may not be coherent. Been up since 4:30 in pain. Yesterday I woke up with pain in rt shoulder blade, thought I slept wrong. I have psoriatic arthritis so I'm used to some pain (the meds help tremendously). As day went by that went away and then my upper spine/neck felt hot and achey and it spread to my shoulders. Went to bed feeling ok. Woke at 4:30 and realized I couldn't get out of bed without my husband's help due to the pain, can't even turn over. NO position took the pain away. Took Aleve. Feels better up and walking than laying or sitting. ..gets so stiff that way. Took another Aleve and then a hot shower which felt really good. Anyone have something similar happen that isn't related to arthritis? If it's not better later I will contact my rheumatologist.

Maybe totally unrelated, but do you still have your gallbladder? Shoulder pain is usually the sign of that and then it will also hurt in your back and you will feel like you are being stabbed.

Good Luck to you and I'm sorry you are in such pain. I hope you are able to get some relief very soon.

Thanks...this feels like it's actually my SPINE though...very hot feeling.

No words of advice for you. :( But lots of "go away, pain" P&PD!

I have had a pain in my shoulder that starts in my neck area and goes from my shoulder down my arm. The pain comes and goes. It gets worse at night or when I lay on that side. I read that people who sleep on their sides can have these symptoms. I thought it might also be arthritis. I have been taking motrin 800 for a tooth problem and that has really not helped the pain in my shoulder. I do notice that during the day it's not as bad. So I bet it's my side sleeping and the weight I put on that side. I'm not sure if this sounds like what your feeling but it could be something to consider?

Well if it feels like someone put an ice pick in your shoulder blade area, I can give you my take on that. I have bone spurs in my cervical spine. When I'm out of alignment that's the type of pain I feel. Hot sensation? Yeah, you could call it that and it causes the muscles in my neck to tighten up so that holding my head in a level position and not letting it go backwards is a chore.

I've found ice right on the ice pick site is the most effective thing I can do. I also use aspirin or extra strength tylenol every 3 to 4 hours. The prescription pain meds are only good for knocking me cold and during the day that is something I'd just as soon avoid.

After 24 to 48 hours, you should switch to heat. Oh and another helpful thing is to put the sorest spot up against a wall corner and lean into it gently. This will hurt but also help the muscles relax.

As always, I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV so if this is the first time this type of pain has happened to you, you should be seen by a professional.

Good luck!

I'm no help, either, but I pray you'll recover quickly. :wizard:

I think you are aware of the Roadback Foundation (you had posted it to me on the chronic illness thread, yes?) Are you on antibiotics and have you changed anything recently to cause a herx? Just trying to figure out why you are flaring badly. :teacher:

:grouphug: Feel better.

Thanks. I know about it, but I haven't gone that route. I'm on Enbrel and methotrexate. Nope, nothing new...hoping it's just a muscle thing.

The Thermacare wraps are good. I kept them in my office all last year because I was having flare ups.

Over the weekend, my mom's shoulder/back got so painful she couldn't even get plates out of the cabinet. Then she got in bed and could not turn over or move around. She FINALLY (after 8 hours of pain) took some Ibuprofen and it took the edge off of it. For some reason, she really hates taking stuff. She has no idea what she did to it.

I had sooooooooo much pain right after I came home from my last hip surgery.I was still on Tylonal 3s. I just had to carefully take hot baths. My body was so out of wack. I slept during the day then of course awake at night. My emotions were wow. The only good thing is that I lost weight. :woohoo: but that didn't last. :sad2:

Not so great today. Pretty run down. The swelling is almost gone, though!! I'm loving "working" from home!

Hopefully the Thermacares will work, or at least make sitting still a little easier.

Co-worker just told me I look like I've been beaten! Well, that sums it up.

You poor thing. I hate flares. Even though the heat feels good, try ice too. I alternate heat and ice and it seems to help it get better. The heat makes it feel better, but the pain comes right back without ice.

Knock yourself out good tonight, not sleeping will make it worse. Try to sleep flat though.

Planning on a Tylenol PM. Thanks!

I'm in about the same boat. I started having problems in December with mine, with a herniated disk, but the doctor told me just before they put an epidural in last week, that I also had spurs. And, also just mentioned that I have the back of an older person! EEk! Not exactly what I wanted to hear or know.;)
However, I already knew that I had arthritis running rampant in various areas and that it runs in my mom's side of the family, sometimes severely.
I picked up my FMLA paperwork today to turn in, and the doctor basically said that there were no guesses all around. Duration of problem, no telling.
How often will she be out?, no telling, etc...:) Our FMLA coordinator will just love this one.:

I would definitely see your doctor. You may also have a herniated disk on top of any arthritis.
Oh and btw, that epidural hasn't made much of a difference! I may be talking to the doctors later this week to see about another shot.:( I thought the whole point of that shot was to lay off the pain meds. Uh uh, not happening yet.

Good luck on your pain.
Kim
