I Can See Epcot From Here! ~ A November Trip and Dining Report ~

I have never done Primeval Whirl, I just don't think I would like it! In fact, other than our 2008 trip when we had to walk through Dinoland to get to the Dinosaur ride, I don't even remember seeing any of that area! We just never spend a lot of time in AK! Your pictures are very nice, AK is really beautiful.

I just visited AKL for the first time in November too, but I LOVED it! I kept saying to my DH "I feel bad for saying this, but this is nicer than the Wilderness Lodge" because WL is my favorite place pretty much anywhere in life right now :rotfl:! I kept telling him we were staying there on our next trip, I think it is so pretty and so peaceful...the only thing I don't like is the location, it's far from all of the other parks.

The Mara seems weird, I didn't know it was like that! I just assumed it was like any other CS place! I guess you would get used to it if you were staying there, but for just a random visitor it must be confusing!

Great update! Well, I guess you've got AKL out of your system now! :lmao: At least you gave it a look, and now you can safely say it's not for you. "5 minutes" must be in the Disney CM handbook. If a walk or wait or anything is under 30 minutes, maybe they are told to just say "5 minutes". :confused3 A 20 minute walk in the cold with the wind blowing is not fun!

AK is my least favorite park, too. But I think part of it is that on our last trip we had the opposite problem as y'all. We were blazing hot!! I remember getting wet paper towels out of the bathroom and putting them around my neck to cool off. I was so ready to go after only a few hours!

Little Miss-Informed over here had no idea that the appetizers and tips were no longer included in the DDP. :rolleyes1 That would definitely make me reconsider getting the DDP. I would much rather have an appy than a dessert. I really like your idea with the gift card for dining! :thumbsup2

I guess if one did not read up on AKL it would be easy to get off at Kidani since all the buses with the exception of DTD stop there first, but I agree the driver should call out what stop you are coming to, but getting off at the wrong stop did fit in with your trip of mishaps plus you were able to check out the Villa area and have a nice long walk too  I have read that the walk is not that bad but when I stayed AKL it was before they built Kidani.
I thought the Mara when I stayed there was the best CS I had ever eaten at but it seems as if it might have gone a bit downhill since then.
I did not find it hard to locate the Mara , then then in all fairness we had a map to look at when we stayed there.
I am wondering if the boys found all the artifacts in and around the AKL lobby interesting?
I am thinking next trip of planning a breakfast at Boma's just so I can show DH the resort, I would still like to go back there someday , but not sure if we will go to AK next trip or not as of a few days ago when we were discussing the trip he said he will be content on just going to MK and Epcot and maybe DHS and AK is my least favorite park so I am fine with that.

DH and I sat out Primeval Whirl while DS :littleangel:and Ddil rode it last trip, 2 times in a row since there was no line. I like the dinosaur ride but we skipped it last trip I wish now we had rode it for the picture :sad1: In fact I got mad at DH for not buying the picture from EE he only rode it once with the kids but at least we bought the pic at HDDR.

Can not wait to hear more about your 2nd day.

Mara sounds strange:confused3

We had breakfast at Boma on our last trip b/c I wanted to check out AKL. We thought it was very pretty and would like to stay there one day. I also found it hard to navigate where we were going. I wanted to find Mara so that I could buy the famous zebra domes but I couldn't find it either. We kind of wandered around outside b/c DD wanted to see the animals (which for some reason there were like none out). The morning we were at AKL there was no one around so I couldn't really ask where Mara was. We saw one CM and we asked where the animals were that time. He pointed us to the lovely empty savannah. I am really hoping if we ever shell out the cash to get a savannah view room we have a better experience.

Primevil Whirl looks like fun but DD is not tall enough to ride yet. It seems like every year I get older and my tolerance for spinning rides goes down. By the time she is able to ride it, I might not be able to.

I love the picture you took of DS11 taking pictures. Too cute!

Mara was a little strange. :confused3 We liked it fine, but wouldn't take a trip all the way to AKL for it again.

AKL is very pretty and I can see why lots of people love it. We just weren't blown away by it. But maybe if it had been nicer outside and we had got off the bus at the right stop, and not had to take a 15-20 minute journey to find it we would have been in a better frame of mind!

Yeah, I seem to be able to handle some of the rides less and less each year. :confused3 I don't want to bail on DS11 though, so I keep riding. If I stop riding he won't have anyone to ride with because DS9 & DH don't like a lot of the stuff he does. Of course he doesn't seem to have a problem doing the single rider thing!

We don't spend a lot of time in AK either, obviously! I think we were only there for about 2 hours this time. It seems to be less each trip.

We have visited AKL and WL and I think I would pick WL out of the two. Neither one really appeals to me all that much, but I think I liked WL a little better. But seeing that both of them have rooms the same size as our favorite moderate I doubt we will ever spend the extra money to stay at either of them. WL definitely has AKL beat on location!

I didn't know Mara was like that either. It was a little confusing, but not terrible. Just not what I was expecting I guess.

Yep, AKL is out of my system and I can now say that I've visited all the Disney resorts!!

Yeah, 5 minutes my behind!! :rotfl: Not even close. But still, I wouldn't have minded the 15+ minute walk had we not been hungry and cold.

AK is usually very hot! Hotter than the rest of the parks for some reason. And always seems more crowded to me. :confused3 But we didn't have those problems this time!

They did away with the appetizer & tips on the DDP awhile back, maybe 2-3 years ago. The value of it unfortunately seems to go downhill each year. I haven't even looked at the 2011 price and inclusions yet.

Yeah, I guess I should have been better prepared when visiting AKL. But I never would have thought they wouldn't announce the stops.

The boys could have cared less about the AKL and anything there. :confused3 So I guess that's another reason it's not on the top of the list of my resorts to try. They don't even care about seeing the animals and going on the safari anymore at AK. DS9 could care less if we even go to AK. And DS11 only wants to go to ride EE! :upsidedow

I'm trying to talk DS11 into skipping AK altogether next trip and maybe we could take a short off-site trip somewhere instead. But he is insisting that he has to ride EE.

Not really an update, but here are the pictures the kids (mostly DS11) took that morning at AK with their camera. It has a better zoom than mine and they got some nice pics of the Tree of Life. It is my old camera, I loved the zoom on it, but it really stinks at taking pictures at night.

Those are great pics! I especially love the one of the duck standing on the rock and the sleeping flamingos. What the heck? There's a snail smilie but no birds?

Wasn't it convenient how all the gift shops had racks and racks of sweatshirts pulled out into the middle of the aisles? :rotfl:

They didn't at first. We stopped in Mouse Gear on Friday (11/5) and there were no sweatshirts to be found. One of the CMs told us that they had moved them all to the basement and replacing them with winter / Christmas stock. We asked if we could get a reduced price and at first she said that they don't do that, there's no such thing as clearance at their store, they send it all somewhere else. After seeing our disappointment, she said she'd ask a manager and then came back and told us she was going to the basement to bring us a few shirts to check out. Dh chose the "Twenty10" shirt and price was reduced from $54 to $37 for us. We were real surprised when we went in the next day and saw racks and racks of sweatshirts in the middle of the aisles. They saw an opportunity and took advantage of it.

Had to buy a second sweatshirt for dh a few days later (he'd left his in the room) in MK at the Emporium and they only had a few on the rack, paid $37 again. Now we having matching sweatshirts.

We also got off the bus at Kidani. However, we were told the walk to AKL was 20 minutes or we could take a shuttle. We took the shuttle (after waiting 20 minutes) and couldn't believe how long the ride was door-to-door. No way would we have wanted to walk after walking all day in a park. The shuttle was kind of goofy though -- a huge step up to the van, I'm talking at least an 18" step. I drive a high vehicle so I am used to climbing in and out, but this was nuts!

We ate at Boma for dinner and loved it. Second time there. Really, try Boma for dinner one night. Mara doesn't even begin to compare with Boma. As for the AKL, it is too dark for my preferences. I know they are doing the whole "dark continent" atmosphere there, but I like light colors and sunshine. We did see animals on the savanna at dusk.

AK is our favorite park but that could be because we are in our 50s and kidless. I imagine that with kids who want to constantly have something to do and not just walk around and look at animals it could be boring. Wait twenty more years and you might find yourself enjoying AK more.

As for not getting on rides -- I used to do everything when I was younger but I don't any more. I've told people that I already proved myself when I was young and there wasn't anything left to prove so why bother riding the roller coasters. But if they still feel the need to prove themselves, then I'd be glad to wait for them. :rotfl:

Hi, I'm joining in too. :surfweb: Sorry about your start at the BW. It looks beautiful. Can't believe your room didn't have a balcony. :confused3

Mara is a little confusing at first as is the layout of AKL. We thought it was beautiful and the walk to the villas was about 10-15 minutes (but we had lovely weather). Too bad the driver or the recording didn't announce the location as they normally do.

Hope your trip gets better for you soon! :flower3:

You may be able to steer DS11 away from AK if they build the new Orlando Thrill Park, it is suppose to have 14 attractions, 8 will be roller coasters and 6 will be other thrill rides.

 Yes, we need a bird smilie!!

The kids are fascinated with birds. :confused3 They could care less about all the other animals at AK, but could stand and watch birds all day. :rotfl:

Yes, they must have saw an opportunity and ran with it! When we went in Mouse Gears on Saturday the 6th there were racks and racks of sweatshirts out!

Yay for the matching sweatshirts! :yay:

We weren't told about a shuttle. It was either walk or get on a regular park bus.

I wish I would have known how long the walk was!

Yeah who knows, maybe someday we will have a greater appreciation for AK.

I know what you mean about wind! That is one thing I can't stand. You get that chilled feeling and it's so hard to warm up. You'd think I could tolerate it better, seeing as how it's like that all winter here, but no.

That's what is so great about WDW - there's something for everyone! We love AKL (and are going back DVC!) but the first time I saw it, I was like, eh, whatever. Now I'm super excited to stay there again!
Mara is a bit different since you don't get your food right away, but hopefully your buzzer works and it's fresher. When we went, we just ordered and took our buzzer to a table and got set up with napkins etc. then went back to get our food.

We have skipped AK the last two trips and really didn't miss it that much (that's why we spent one night at AKL in Dec 09 - to see animals). But we are planning on doing it next time - the girls love the animals and we're hoping it's warm enough to ride Kali River Rapids.

Yeah, we weren't off to a great start that's for sure. But things did shape up after a few days and we had some really great times!

I did find AKL & Mara a little confusing, but I'm sure that's mostly my own fault for not researching better. So, the buses usually do announce the stops? That figures, we were just having some bad luck!! :upsidedow

Ooooohhh he would love that!! :cool1: I hadn't heard anything about that before. Or that Legoland was coming to FL either. Looks like there will be lots to do in central FL pretty soon!

We've never ventured out of Disney yet, but have been talking about it recently. . .

Yes, that wind was terrible. At times it felt like it could knock you over!

That's what we should have done at Mara, but we were just thrown for a loop with the whole set up and pager thing I guess and didn't think about what we were doing!

I don't think I'd miss AK a bit if we skipped it. Maybe we should just go there about every other trip. I think that would be enough!

We never ventured out much either, our frist trip we visited Nasa which they have expanded since '89, my youngest was 9 at the time and loved it there, if yours are into space at all it is worth a trip, other than that we went to Seaworld once or twice and Universal I think 2 years, we prefer to stay on property and not have to drive ourselves but we did rent a car twice. When we went to Nasa we took a Mears Shuttle that picked us up at the Hotel.

Catching up from page 5!!!

It's almost 10pm so I'll keep it short and sweet

Epcot crowd pic :scared1:

Balcony situation- or lack thereof :sad2: Glad it all worked out!

BRG- A "must do" for our next trip. I wish we would have squeezed it in last January. You've always given it a good review and it looks like a place that we'd enjoy.

DDP- I'm considering not getting it next trip too. We always get the QSDDP so it's a little different. I've got a year to do the math though. :teacher:

AK- I feel the same as you- not may favorite park. We always skipped Dinosaur. Hopefully when the kids are a little bigger I'll get to experience it!

Mara- What a hike!!!! :faint:

Off to bed now!

We have been talking about taking an off-site trip. Just a day trip, we would still stay on-site. We'd probably rent a car for the day, which would be new to us. Seems like there's lots to do within an hour of WDW, now we just need to decide what is best for us. We don't want to take too much time away from Disney!!

Hey Kim!

Yeah, we weren't of to a great start on this vacation. But I guess they can't all be perfect from beginning to end. Although last year pretty much was, so this was kind of hard to take!

Yes you must do BRG at least once and see how you like it! :thumbsup2 Then after dinner you could hang out on the BW and see the entertainers for a bit!

Loving this TR! Your last one got me hooked on reading these and I'm so glad to see your latest one. I can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

After lunch at Mara we walked a little further and the kids spotted an arcade. They wanted to use their arcade card that came with the package. I told them to save it for on the BW, but they couldn't wait. I don't know if the arcade card came with less points this time or if the games cost more points, but they each got to play one game and the card was out of points. In the past they have each been able to play at least 2-3 games with it.

AKL pool ~

I was now to the point of checking my phone about every 3 minutes. And still nothing. I was really wanting to get into our room and get unpacked. Plus we wanted to relax a little before heading out to DTD for shopping & dinner that evening. So we decided to just go back to the BWI and wait it out.

We walked out the the bus stop at AKL and were planning to take a bus to AK, then change to a BWI bus. But a few minutes after we got to the bus stop a DHS bus pulled up. So we hopped on it and then changed to the boat at DHS. The boat goes from DHS to the Swan/Dolphin (S/D are one stop for the boat, but 2 separate stops for the buses), then to the YC/BC (they are also just one stop for the boat, but 2 separate stops for the buses), and then to the BWI. When the boat pulled into the S/D the captain made an announcement that if anyone was going to the BWI and wanted to get there faster than staying on the boat, that you could get off here at the S/D and walk over and beat the boat by 12 minutes. (They also made this announcement on the buses). So we got off at the S/D and walked over to the BWI.

We walked up to the front desk to see if they could tell us about how much longer it would be until our room was ready. The CM looked and said – oh it's ready, it's been ready. :headache: And the never called!!!

At this point I didn't care anymore that they didn't call, I just wanted to see our new room and that dang thing had better have a balcony! She told us we were in room 5296.

We told the kids the new room was ready and we went over to Bell Services and asked for our luggage. They said they would bring it right up. They were handing out balloons in the lobby and the kids each grabbed one and we were on our way up!

In the elevator.

This time when we got off the elevator on the 5th floor we turned left and our room was about 4-5 doors downthe hall on the left. I was hoping that was far enough away from the elevator that we wouldn't hear it all night again – it was!

We opened the door and there is was – the long awaited balcony! DS9 goes over and opens the door to the balcony and says – “Hey, I CAN SEE EPCOT FROM HERE!” And that's where I got the TR title!
