I beg your pardon?

When was the last time you heard anyone use that phrase?

Usually it's 'pardon me' or 'I'm sorry' or 'excuse me' or 'what.'

Do you use that phrase?

I do! Typically, it's in a bit of a snooty voice (think Sigourney Weaver in Holes) with my kids. When that comes out, they know they said something wrong!

Usually, I say "beg pardon?" if I didn't catch something. It drives my husband nuts since it's not a real sentence. But then again, he hates the way I say "member" instead of "remember".

We use the phrase and not in a snippy way. In fact, my seven year old's teacher complimented me on her saying it. She said so many kids just say, "Huh?" or "What?"

I say that when one of my kids says something in such a way that I'm about to get really mad. It's gives them a chance to re-phrase with a better attitude, hopefully.

Otherwise, it's just "excuse me?"

I say it. I'm always amazed when it confuses kids - most of them have never heard it before.

If I know the person well, I say excuse moi, or repetez. If I don't know them well, I say "excuse me". I only say pardon me when I'm speaking to someone that makes fun of my southern accent.

Nope, I don't ever beg anyone's pardon but I do say "Pardon Me" instead of excuse me. My dad used to say 'pardon me' when I was a kid and I thought it was neat so I copied him.

...when I saw the title of your thread, I had to laugh, cause that's one of my lines in the play I'm doing right now. I play the wife in a British couple and when the husband says to me

"Who was that girl you threw up on"?

I say...

"I beg your pardon"???

In real life, though, I'd be inclined to say "Pardon Me"?

I was shopping with my daughter this weekend looking for dresses. Bad time to go. I said excuse me nicely when someone was looking at something hung on a wall and I had to walk thru their viewing area. Most just gave me a humpf like I invaded their private space. But, at least I felt better.

Yes, like others I DO say it and it's always dripping with attitiude! For everyday use, I use pardon me, excuse me, or sorry (sorry has a questioning inflection to it, like when I want someone to repeat something).

Sometimes my parents say that when they are VERY VERY upset with something I say, but usually we just say "excuse me?" And my mom says "Hmmm??" a lot if she doesn't hear what I say (and sometimes I have to repeat 3 or 4 times... you'd think SHE was the kid here).

Perhaps it's an English thing, but I use "I beg your pardon" quite a lot. As for "excuse me" I think we use it differently over here usually when someone is blocking our way when walking (in the car I use something a bit stronger ).
