I am the only one who won't use a diaper changing station???

If I were in a restaurant and I didn't have my stroller, myself or my husband will take DD out to the car to change her.

And yes... I'm a hovering bathroom user as well! I would hold DD (6 year old) over the toilet until she got too big to hold, now she just uses those toilet seat covers or toilet paper to sit on. I'll be the first to admit it, I'm a germaphobe! It's okay by me though!

Oh, dear!!! I didn't know THAT was a hot topic. And I was saying that tongue-in-cheek---yes, my Grandma and Mother tried to teach me that one, but I never did master the fine art of "hovering".

I was just kidding-- how serious can a "hovering" debate really get? As long as the hoverers can aim and clean up after themselves, what goes on in the stall is none of my business!

I too don't use changing stations. To me it is sort of like laying down on a public toilet! Bleeeeh! I am resigned to the fact that I may have to use on if WDW so I will be bringing Clorox wipes as well as disposable changing pads. I'd like to think that WDW keeps them very clean but a toilet is a toilet, and these things are pretty close to that. I am not a germaphobe for the record, but I have to say that I usually avoid them at all costs. This is my first trip to WDW with my little ones and both are in diapers so I'll have to report back when I return. I promise to give a full report! Oh- and btw, I am not insulting anyone who uses them, I amd just a weirdo about certain things!

I want just to make a comment, do you know there is more germs on your telephone, keyboard and mouse than any public restrooms or changing tables, I work has a janitor in a Hotel were there is a changing table, each time I happen to see someone carying a baby or toddler in, I go clean up the changing table after that and I pass each hour of a day in the restrooms and everytime, everything is cleaned and I use Lysol on the changing tables.

there has been a commercial on UK tv recently to that effect. They said your babys high chair probably has more germs on it than your toilet seat.

That may be true- but at least I know where those germs came from! Not meant to insult anyone, I just don't care much for certain things. No biggie. I do commend Dodge34 for being such a conscientious worker. I wish everyone was that way but unfortunately they aren't. I have been many places where going to the bathroom in the street was cleaner than some restaraunt bathrooms. Of course that isn't often, but I wish more people would follow your lead.

I have taken my DD to WDW, she is just now 25 months old, I take her to the Baby Care Stations in each park! They are wonderful!

BUT, I have only once changed her in a changing staion, and that was at the CG in the CR, and I had anti-bacterial wipes to clean the ledge!

I have always changed her in the car, on my lap, or in the stroller!

I am such a germ-o-phob anyway! We all carry wipes in our car to clean her little hands everywhere we go!

I use them all the time. I have the Huggies disposable pads so nothing is returning to my bag. I have no problems with them, after all as my pediatrician says a few germs helps build the immune system.

I have a funny story that goes along with this topic. I was in a bathroom at a book store a few weeks ago when a mom with 2 young boys came in. They looked around ages 3 and 4. The mom very sternly, over and over again, told them not to touch anything on the toilets. One of the boys asked why and she explained, again very sternly, that they could get sick from touching a dirty toilet. I was sort of chuckling to myself, been there, done that kind of thing (although she was way more stern than I've ever been with my kids-NOT). Boy was I surprised then when they left the bathroom after they all used the facilities, mom included, without washing their hands!! I have never hovered myself and I use changing tables, but I make sure that everyone washes their hands with soap and water everytime. Gross!!

Cinder1, I totally agree about hand washing. I don't hover, have never taught my kids to hover, used changing tables when they were in diapers, usually with my own pad that I may or may not have cleaned well, BUT , I always wash my hands well with warm, soapy water, and I try not to touch the door with my hand when leaving (or I use a paper towel on the handle when possible).

I suppose that most people have things that gross them out and bathroom doors would be my thing.

BTW, my kids were never sick much--mainly the normal colds and stomach viruses.

You people crack me up. I sure hope you never have to go to a hospital. I've worked in many, top hospitals in Big cities and they're all the same. Things splatter in the weirdest places. Even in the hallway I'll notice splatters of blood or other things on the artwork..it's easy to get missed in the brushstrokes and colors. The curtains between the beds usually have some kind of body fluid on them...they don't get washed between patients and when you ahve old people on bedside commodes and then they grab the curtain................ Working in a hospital will either completely gross you out or make you realize that you are surrounded by some pretty nasty stuff anywhere you go and you will survive. If you look on the underside of the bedrails you will usually find feces/blood dried in the cracks. These surfaces just get wiped down but "stuff" does get up in places.

I've always used the diaper stations at WDW. They've always been very clean in my experience. I've never covered in in paper or any extra precaustions. Just check and make sure there are no obvious dirty spots and then just wash your hands. I don't slather him in antibacterial everyday and he's managed to have 1 day of fever and no colds in his 2 years of life.

Relax with the GERMS!!!!!

Maybe that's why I'm so blase about the 'germs' issue!!!! I'm a nurse and work with people who are learning disabled - some of the things I've had to clean off people I couldn't even begin to discuss on this forum!

I'm now a link nurse for the infection control service and the current wisdom states that the overuse of anti-bacterial products is weakening people's immune systems making them more prone to illness when they DO come into contact with germs!

cinder1 is exactly right - the BIG key to preventing infections is hand-washing! All the using of anti-bacterial stuff just gives a false sense of security.

I've actaully cahllenged someone who didn't wash their hands on more than one occasion - since my daughter was old enough to use the toilet herself, I 've ALWAYS made her wash her hands after using the toilet - and now if I see someone about to leave without I say something like 'That's a good girl Gemma, only REALLY dirty people don't wash their hands!" More than once I've seen someone who was about to leave head back to the sinks!!!!!!!!!!!

I was pondering this the other night, and I did wonder how people changing babys on the backseat of the car were washing their hands after the diaper change - I don't feel clean if I've just used a wipe or some gel - only if I have washed my hands properly with soap and water.

One question for all of you out there who won't use changing tabels.......What are you ever going to do when your child starts POTTY TRAINING??!! My DH teases me that I'm a germ freak just because I wipe down the area, use a pad, and wash our hands. I can't wait to tell him about some of these posts. Anyway, I was dreading the moment when my DS started asking to go potty in public places! After the first few times, it's really not that bad. I just wipe the seat & exposed areas w/anti-bac wipes, put on the paper or disposable covers I sometimes carry, and let nature take its course! It's well worth it hearing "Mommy, I do potty!" and seeing that big smile. No offense, but IMHO, I think some of you need to lighten up before your child can understand and become just as neurotic.

Actually, my DD is my 3rd child so I've been there and done that. The public toilets don't bother me--of course we wipe them down, and wash hands. It is just the changing table for diaper changes that grosses me out. I guess it's because you have to lay the baby down on the thing, and babies stick hands everywhere and into their mouths, etc.

If that is "neurotic" then I guess I'll happily accept that label.

My husband finds it much more neurotic that I open the bathroom door when leaving it with a paper towel--I won't touch that doorknob bare-handed

Hey, if your neurotic, then I'm neurotic too!

Some people are just very judgmental, that's all. I tend to ignore people who think they need to name call in order to make their point.

I could care less if people use changing stations, or if they don't. I don't care if people wash their hands when they use the restroom... that's their prerogative. I don't care if people sit on the toilets or use a cover... do whatever makes you happy. I will do the same! Different strokes for different folks!

Anyway, You sound just like me! I know exactly what your point is (unlike some in this thread who seem to be completely misunderstanding!) You are definitely not alone.

You are definitely not alone on this one. Im right there with ya. I really hate those changing things. Have three kids and only used it maybe twice between the three. To add to this we were at Legoland in July and went to change my ds3 who was in the middle of potty training and had an accident. While we were waiting for a stall, there was a lady at the changing center who was using the sink that is right next to it as a bathinette and washing the babys bum and all the poo and stuff off with water ---IN THE SINK! The sink that I was to use to wash my hands with when I was done helping ds. YUK>

To all the medical professionals here, yes I agree with you that the more we use antibacterials and overuse of the jel soaps are just a "safe" feeling, I am also a medical professional who also thinks that brazen neglect of clean spaces whether its a wall in a hospital , the changing station or door handle is also not in the best interests of cleanliness or in reducing spread of disease, afterall Ill bet that your doctors you work for still want you to change the paper and sheets after the last patient is gone from the doctors office and the standards for biohazard waste would not allow for patients to just reuse a bed although it looks "clean" Just because you cant see it doesnt mean its not there. If youre not worried then maybe you wont mind if they dont sterilize the speculum next dr visit.

I didnt think so.
