What's with all the deer lovers? I'm sorry but they are not only a nuisance but truly dangerous to motorists. My bil had a terrible accident with a deer in his soft-topped jeep and nearly died. The deer overpopulation near us drives us crazy every year. We don't eat deer meat but I would be close to inviting hunters onto our property to lessen the herd.

take your car to a couple of body shops or have them send an estimator to where ever the car is, and get some estimates (they're usually free). do this before the insurance comp. makes their decision. this will give you some bargaining room. And you don't have to go to the ones the insurance recommends. some body shops work for the ins. comp. and ripp you off. I would do this monday.

This is not a PETA debate. She hit a deer and wonders if she can get her money out of an older vehicle. DH did in one and got a new Yukon.
Deer are bad around here and they expanded hunting season because of it. I've hit 3 and thankfully driving in large cars/van at the time but in a smaller car, they hit the hood and then come through the window.
OP, glad you are ok and hope things work out with your accident. Kind of stinks at Christmas.

It is not the deer's fault that we (humans) have encroached on their territory and destroyed their habitat.

I hit a deer a year ago in my 2003 Chrysler T&C at the time it had 125,000 miles on it. I was afraid of it getting totaled too. Front bumper, hood, lights, front pass. fender all damaged. I was able to get it repairs by insurance for about 3200. So good luck to you. I am still driving it and so happy that I was able to get it repaired.

I was afraid this would become a deer hugging debate. I am not a hunter and am not married to one. But half my family is and I work at Bass Pro Shops and I am very proud to work for a wonderful company that yes may encourage hunting but in these tough time many of my associates have donated meat to numerous food banks and have fed many families that are in need in our store and our community. So yes maybe we took over the "deer territory" but lets remember that for many years every family lived off the land.

I want to be clear I did not want to kill a deer. I did not want to damage my car and most importantly I had my 2 boys in the car and I would never want them to be in harms way.
I am simply mad that my car is damaged. My husband and I worked hard to pay it off we have a few more expensive year before our kids start school so we are paying a fortune in childcare right now and had no intention of buying a new car until our youngest is in kindergarden and that would only be because we had to not because we want to buy a new one.

Please don't turn this into more than it is. we are just a regular family trying to get by the best we can. (while still saving money for Disney World )

Did I feel sad for the deer? for a second then I was mad. I was mad that we could have been hurt, I was sad because my kids were worried that I killed Rudolph etc. But most of all I was mad when I saw the damage to my car because it does not fit in our plan right now.

But most importantly I was thankful that no one was hurt a previous poster said it best my car is replaceable. My kids are not.

There are more wild deer in North America now than there have been in approximately the last 70-80 years. This is due primarily to the shrinking of the hunter pool. The reason people hit more deer these days isn't due to our taking over their territory - they're moving into ours. This is true of many species that are highly adaptable, including coyotes and wild pigs.

We should all be on guard more now than ever for deer in the streets, even in places where there have never been deer in anyone's living memory; I don't see that this will change either in the near future, because the trends that have lead to this outcome are ongoing.

Not a debate about animals or cars, it's a "just is".

OP - sorry about your car and the deductible. I love my 2005 vehicle and would hate to have to replace it for another 4 or 5 years, as I love, love, love not having a car note.

It is really sad for the deer that there are less hunters now, actually. If the population is not controlled, there is not enough food for all the deer in the wild and they will die a worse death than being shot by a hunter or hit by a car. There aren't the number of natural predators as before all the development. For those of you who are complaining that we have taken the deer's land away, maybe you would agree to bulldoze your house and give them your land to roam on?

I just try to drive defensively. I have come close, but luckily, I haven't hit one yet. I live in a fairly rural area, but in a neighborhood. They are all over the area this year. My house is about 10 houses from the small strip of woods that makes up our "park". On the other side of my house is a main road. I have never seen deer in my yard until this year. Last night, there was a beautiful buck in our yard eating in the snow. I have a feeling, I will be seeing more. I just hope I see them in my yard and in the woods and NOT on the road!

We hit one years ago coming back from vacation. It was crossing the freeway and the car in front of us hit it so we just got what they didn't destroy thrown in our lane. The van we drove was newer but still it did some major major damage. It crushed a bunch of stuff up underneath the van. The insurance fixed it but for months after we still smelled 'deer' everytime we drove it, as the engine would heat up...etc. It was so gross.

Be thankful that you're okay, and just find a car you can deal with the payments or buy something used.

I too can't believe the flack the OP is getting. She didn't come on here yelling about the deer and I am pretty sure she didn't set off to hit Bambi. She came here and vented about an unfortunate situation. I am sure she is relieved that noone was hurt and it is sad about the deer. Sorry, but not everyone can always be "so perfect" and never complain when something unexpectated comes up. I forgot that we leave in a disney movie where we live in harmony with all the forest animals. Give her a break

I feel like an expert on this. I hit a deer in 2008, it was $6500 damage to my 2003 Ford Windstar. The airbags didn't deploy and the insurance company based things on the value of the van and the damages. Since the airbag didn't deploy and my van still was worth it to them they fixed it. A year later in 2009 I hit a deer again. Once again same thing, this time they put $4700 into repairing it. Airbags didn't deploy the second time either. The second time there was a deer's body shape smashed across the hood of the van. It was somewhat humorous to look at. I guess Ford can make a peice of junk engine, but the body sure holds up. The worse thing to hit is a Racoon. They do tons of damage and get up under the car and make things smell terrible. Both times I had to pay a $500 deductable. So I didn't feel bad for the deer either. Sorry for those of you that this may offend. Deer are a nuisance, and have cost me a lot of money and time

I would be worried those airbags are defective if they didn't go off twice with all that damage.

I hit a deer tonight. I did quite a bit of damage to my car. I am actually sort of nervous they might total it out. anyone with any experience? I have a 2005 Crystler T &C with 135,000 miles on it. It looks like (it was dark) My hood is damaged my bumper is cracked and pushed back so I can't open my passenger door. My light is hanging to the ground. I am worried its not worth much more than the cost to repair it. We owe nothing on the car and we like that. We planned on driving it at least 2 more years unless it became a money pit. our deductable is $250. I am so frustrated I feel like we never get ahead. I know I should be counting my blessings. But come on. I was on my way to the Grocery store to get ready for Christmas baking.

The entire front of my former (BRAND NEW ) Scion Xb was smashed in, so the car was totaled. Insurance did help, but I ended up getting a Honda Accord so it was still a good few $$$ out of pocket. With a big enough down payment, your monthly payments wouldn't be too bad. I bought my Accord with 36K miles on it already (lease trade in I assume) and I've had it ever since (it's a 2004, got it in 2007).
